Nivi P. They’re ALWAYS male. There are Disney princesses, but they are always just carbon copy damsels in distress. The only functional female characters in Disney are Merida (Brave), Ariel (The little mermaid) Elsa (frozen), Moana (Moana), and now this girl. Consider how many male princes/protagonists there are in Disney, and you get your answer. I agree, there’s no point making the protagonist female for no reason, but there’s also a huge market for powerful female figures, and so Disney caters. Adapt now, or get stuck in the past.
only the guardian of the dragon gem could stop them but when the world needed them most, they wanisht... a hundred years past and my brother and I discovered the new Katara a copy named Raya...

Imagine being a tribe who wears purple, the hardest to color to get in the past. So rare it wasn't even an option to flags. Those people are rich Edit: I know is a fictional world, but we're taking about Disney guys. Colors matter when were taking about character design, and this *might* be an important detail.
This brings me so much joy as a Southeast Asian. I can really see Disney put the effort into the character and setting designs. The person Raya found in the cave is wearing a Hanuman mask, a character in the Ramayana epic. Raya wields what appears to be an Angkorian style sword. A building she jumped onto has pointed tips reminiscent of Theravada Buddhism buildings to me. My heart feels so full, I've never felt like Southeast Asian culture, let alone Khmer culture was seen in media other than East Asian cultures.
You sure that's a hanuman like mask? Coz Hanuman is basically monkey King of India. Edit: Pardon my little knowledge on other asian Hindu/Buddhist influenced culture. I did some research and it indeed is a Hanuman mask but from Thai version of ramayana. Art styles varies but Same thing.

She also said her entire life she has been training to Be a Guardian of the dragon gem. And in the beginning of them fighting the man out classes her and perfectly predicts her movements. Maybe this is her training with her mentor? Idk this is just something that popped into my mind when I was watching the trailer

Finally, this is what we want from you, Disney. New stories, new worlds. Not awful live action remakes. EDIT: So apparently, being optimistic starts arguments on the internet. Sure, it's similar to a bunch of stuff. There's definitely some Avatar influence and though I haven't seen some of the other titles mentioned, I'll take the point that if it feels similar, you might be skeptical. I don't really understand how this is a "princess movie in disguise" though? Like, we aren't even shown a male lead... Seems to me like they've got a pretty interesting maybe independent female protagonist. If there ends up being a romance arc, I hope they don't diminish Raya's character arc. It might not be the deepest story or whatever, but somehow I can't see the team behind Disney's "successful" (whether or not you like them) 3D movies in the past decade making a movie worse than Mulan 2020. You can boil most PG animated movies down into: "We need to do A THING so we can stop THE CONFLICT." That's kind of what the movies are about. Basically, all I'm saying is that I'm optimistic for something that isn't a sequel or a remake.
Is it new though? It looks like they took the stories from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Dragon Prince (on Netflix, which had people from ATLA involved in its creation) and mish mashed it into this movie. It doesnt just look inspired, it looks stolen. But I can't say that for sure without actually seeing the movie. The trailer has left me so skeptical though.
@Choco Sweets wanna know a movie thats unoriginal in plot, sharing many cliches yet turned out pretty great? One hint, it sounds like your first name. While you figure that out, I just wanna say there are plenty of movies (Disney or not) that had been unoriginal yet pretty amazing on their own. Point is, its not about what they borrow, its how they use and execute it, whether through new techniques, being truer to the settings, the animation and the performance of the VAs.

There were several countries that influenced the film, including Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Several creative teams were sent to different countries in Southeast Asia specifically to research, said producer Osnat Shurer-who was also behind Moana!!
The film is set in a fictional fantasy land called Kumandra, inspired by Southeast Asian cultures from Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Laos.[9][10][11] To conduct research, the film makers and the production team traveled to Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines

Some of the SE Asia references I got from the trailer: Raya - meaning grand or great in malay & indo, prolly derived from sanskrit Disney castle on a cliff - tanah lot temple Dragon & water - in SE Asia, dragon (naga) is associated with bodies of water (sea, river, lake) Fashion - wrap-around clothing, kelatbahu armband, sarong, etc. Mossy stone tunnel - typical ancient temple in the tropical region (like Angkor Wat) Double stick weapon - arnis Tuktuk - tuk tuk Evil spirit mask - topeng dance mask (kolo, buto,... ), khon, etc. Praying pose - ancient Hindu influence in the region Various tribes - there are hundreds of ethnic groups in SE Asia (Indonesia alone recognized 633 groups) Other weapons - asymmetrical blade (keris, sundang,... ), sickle (celurit), dong son bronze axe + American references: desert with rock pedestals, armadillo
Arnis too her weapon are made of Ratan Stick which Called Arnis national martial in the Philippines Edit: For correction Ratan not Bamboo stick btw I'm so happy for SEA s-region 🥰

Only Dragons mastered all life’s power. Only they could stop the ruthless Druun. But when the world needed them most, they are defeated or disappeared. Nobody had seen them for a hundred years, until my pet Tuk and I found one of them, a dragon named Sisu. The problem is, this Dragon is still weak, and even though her potential can be brought back, she has a lot to learn before she's ready to save anyone. The Fang Nation will do anything to capture the Dragon before she get all the her powers back, so I must keep her safe until she's ready to fulfill her destiny.

This brings me so much joy as a Southeast Asian. I can really see Disney put the effort into the character and setting designs.
Exactly.
Is it new though? It looks like they took the stories from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Dragon Prince (on Netflix, which had people from ATLA involved in its creation) and mish mashed it into this movie. I love this movie, song and everything. 🥳🥳🥳 I watched this movie today and I legit cried at the end ...omg. This is a masterpiece. 😍It is so breathtaking and a lot of lessons learned. One of Disney’s best. ❤️❤️ I loved every minute of it. Thank you so much Disney for giving us beautiful movies like this. ❤️❤️ When I lost hope, Raya and the Last Dragon became a hope for me. 🔥🔥🔥
It has no songs
Dude, is she Filipino? She's using Arnis sticks, that's insane!

@Death,the Asian Chick Is a Bro not really she is mostly based on the khmer empires and such so i would say its based in indochina, not PH.

Hi, my son loves Disney and made a Disney Princess Medley. Hope you will give it a listen: th-cam.com/video/Rq9L7SgK7D8/w-d-xo.html
Fang. Heart. Spine. Talon. Tail. My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, how Kumandra once lived in harmony. How everything changed once the Druun attacked. All tribes thinks I'm crazy, but I believe Sisu can save the world."
This is fire 🔥
The guy with the mask really looks like he wants to restore his honour.
That’s rough buddy
such a perfect comment. IYKYK lmao
My mother really liked to make mask.... *touches necklace*
bet his face have a scar
Guarantee he has to find the last dragon
Woah, it looks like for most of the movie she's an adult. Not something I'd expect from a Disney Animated Studios movie! It looks very cool though, has a larger world than most Disney movies and is based on cultures we don't see much of in Western media. I'm excited for more!
I don’t think it is that surprising that she’ll be an adult for most of the movie because Anna and Elsa both were in their movies. But I agree I think the movie looks really exciting.
Elsa is an adult in her movie. 21 yrs.

Can't really tell what culture this is depicting...Magical Southeast Asia? ...There's dessert, is it Norther or Western China? I'm probably just dumb, but the culture seems pretty nondescript so far
