The “string to pull trigger” is likely something closer to a Bowden cable (if you’ve ever ridden a bike, Bowden cables are what connected the brake levers to the actual brakes) - with the cable likely having an electric motor on the end opposite the trigger of the machine guns (which, ironically, would be out of place if they’re still in East Germany - those are Heckler and Koch MP5 SMGs, and H&K is a West German company).

I will note - presumably, MacGyver was infiltrating/already in East Berlin. East Berlin was part of East Germany, which was part of the Warsaw Pact during the Cold War. And if you were in the Warsaw Pact, you either used an AK, or a slightly different rifle that’s basically identical to an AK except it can’t take AK magazines.
