A young hobbit who would've liked nothing better than to find out what was beyond the borders of the Shire. The world is not in your books and maps. It's out there.
Reminds me of my childhood self, when I actually had dreams of adventure and discovery. I lost nearly all of that spirit. I became complacent, rigid and too concerned with the mundane(my mother's dishes). I wish I could just do the Bilbo and go find something actually meaningful, to complete my personal journey, alas I'm way too late to catch that train. The desire remains though, and the "what if's" will torment me for the rest of my days. Don't lose the Light in your eyes people. It's too late for me, but for all you young hobbits there's a world of adventure out there.

I sang a few verses of this song to my grandpa when I visited him in the hospital. He passed away a week later. Clamavi De Profundis and J.R.R. Tolkien have my sincere gratitude for giving me this song to share with my grandpa in my last time seeing him.
Your experience reminds me of the last time a actually talked to my Opa. He said: "I love you." I replied: "I love you too." Later we prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and soon after, he passed. My Oma would sing to him his favorite songs, but around a month before he was to pass, he for some reason didn't appreciate singing and would try to shoo her and my aunt's away. My Opa had dementia before he passed, and would occasionally call me by the name of some old friend from his childhood and early adult life, in the Netherlands. He didn't necessarily appreciate Tolkien as he wasn't a big reader, but I know he would have loved to meet him. I pray they are having a conversation right now in God's Kingdom. My condolences for your Opa.
God you can really feel bilbo in this version, it starts of quite floaty and comfortable I.e. the hobbits and shire but as the backing voices come in you really get a feel of dwarvish adventure, then transitioning into the music back to bag end and then with an elderly voice you hear bilbo pass the adventure on and relax into his old age, you haven’t just made a rendition of the poem from bilbo to culminate the lord of the rings series you’ve managed to put bilbo his entirety into a song and that’s just beautiful
While the original Lord of the Rings was better than the Hobbit trilogy, I found that Martin Freeman’s Bilbo was the hobbit character I liked most. This song is very Bilbo, very Tolkien and very true.

My sister and I saw the movies before we read the books, and as kids we tried to peice together the song Bilbo and Gandalf sing in the beginning of Fellowship. Its one of my favorite memories, and I find myself singing the opening song whenever I'm traveling a new road as a sorta way of bringing her with me. I guess Reptile was right that a part of me will die with it. I remember so many games on the old consoles, that when i would forget it now, i won´t play them again since i became a little graphics whore in games. And watching the first Lord of the rings movie in the cinema as a young child. The adrenaline of going into an movie thats not for your age... Or watching the second part at a sleepover at a friends place... You can´t compensate for that. Was foolish to wish for that. :D

I don't fully understand the creation story of Tolkien's Silmarillian, and it seems to be a bit more complex than humans CAN understand, but there's one part of the creation story I think I do understand: the song. Tolkien describes how before any essence of reality was yet crafted, the greatest god showed the others the entirety of any possible reality: good, evil, order, chaos, light, dark, substance, void, and many more concepts that we can't yet understand. The other gods were awestruck at the sheer beauty of all of this, and had trouble expressing their feelings about it. And so the greatest god began to sing, a simple tune, not much more than a beat to build off of. Hearing this base, and hearing the great god's expression through it, the other gods, one by one, began to sing along, adding tune, and tale, and instrument, and the song built into greater and greater verses, a great cacophony from all the gods, and they poured out their emotions, their souls, their needs, hopes, and fears, into this great song, until one finished, then another, and one by one the gods finished their parts, and then, finally, the great god stopped. And told the others what they had just accomplished. In singing, and playing, and pouring their soul into song, theu had wraught the path of reality in beginning, form, and end, and then the great god showed the path that they had created. And from this story, I gather that there is no more godly of a way to express one's self than in song. That even the gods were content to pour out their hearts, minds, and souls into a song, almost as if by instinct. And so I commend you, clamavi de profundis, for making and sustaining the songs of tales almost lost. For You, all of you who work on these, are doing the work of the gods.
I had never noticed how this poem captures the very essence of what is, in my opinion, Bilbo's essence. Such a wonderful character, my favourite by far. And your version is simply fantastic! I love this so much. I've played it non stop. I even played it for my very hyper three year old niece. She stopped what she was doing, started humming like she knew the song and fell into a peaceful sleep. So Tolkien-ish
Is it just me or is this poem (and song) a metaphor for life the road symbolizing life with the different setting being different points in life and the "fire and sword" and the"horrors in the halls of stone" representing all the hardships you go through in the journey of life. In the end the singer's voice becomes soft like an old man telling stories of his long and eventful life. That would mean the "lightened inn" is a metaphor for death or heaven. I truly believe that this song in its essence is about a man's (or hobbit's) journey through life.

For some unexplained reason. I'm suddenly teary eyed listening to this. It's beautiful and wonderful yet the tears and sadness are there for some reason.
I have re-read The Hobbit for the second time this month after so many years and hearing this song after reading it puts such a smile on my face while tears go down my cheeks. This is too beautiful.
It took me a long time to realize why Frodo left for Valinor at the end of Return of the King but I think the last verse explains it perfectly, Frodo had suffered greatly under the influence of The Ring, he went through severe physical and emotional trauma and he was tired, or as the poem puts it, “weary,” he wanted and deserved rest in a safe, happy, peaceful environment, and for him that was Valinor. I think Sam was also “weary” but for him Rosey and his garden in the Shire was the safe, happy, peaceful environment, that’s why when Rosey died he joined Frodo. It’s taken me a long time to understand this but this song has helped immensely.

I work in a 4th grade class and the students have all learned this beautiful song. When they sing it, its wonderful seeing each of their faces as they sing. I see some stand a little bit taller, some who are sensitive and emotional become a little more tougher, their voices come together. It brings a sense of unity to these boys and girls.

Yes, and as Bilbo leaves for Rivendell he sings it as well, giving credence to that melody being the correct one for this song. CDP just filled in the rest of the poem (from the books, which was never fully featured in the movie) to the same melody

Tolkien stated in the preface to Fellowship: “I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. I much prefer history - true or feigned- with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. I think that many confuse applicability with allegory, but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author.” To Tolkien, he never intended for his works to be interpreted as allegory. He hated it. Instead, the "horrors in the halls of stone" is referring to Smaug and his attack on Thorin and Company inside Erebor. Since Bilbo wrote this song, it is written from what Bilbo experienced. Not trying to rag on ya, so don't think that I am, nor am I a "Tolkien purist". I'm just pointing it out so you understand Tolkien's perspective.
I've followed your channel for a couple of years now, since you first posted your arrangement of Misty Mountains, and I just want to say that you guys are absolutely fantastic! You've created the best versions of Tolkien's songs ever, especially by making them sound like actual songs that people would sing! (Unlike the Tolkien Ensemble, which is good but sounds more like opera than everyday music). Your songs are iconic and I find myself often humming or singing them at various times throughout the day. Absolutely lovely. This is the only cover that doesnnt try to make it into something grander than it is. It is a walking song, to hum and sing as you travel. So many of the covers try to make it more profound or dramatic than its purpose.
And this was (one of) the point when I thought that if there's something in The Hobbit movies that's better than LotR then it's the music. I think it's more powerful even in itself and more with this epicccc remix.

And so the greatest god began to sing, a simple tune, not much more than a beat to build off of. Hearing this base, and hearing the great god's expression through it, the other gods, one by one, began to sing along, adding tune, and tale, and instrument, and the song built into greater and greater verses, a great cacophony from all the gods, and they poured out their emotions, their souls, their needs, hopes, and fears, into this great song, until one finished, then another, and one by one the gods finished their parts, and then, finally, the great god stopped. And told the others what they had just accomplished.
In singing, and playing, and pouring their soul into song, theu had wraught the path of reality in beginning, form, and end, and then the great god showed the path that they had created.
And from this story, I gather that there is no more godly of a way to express one's self than in song. That even the gods were content to pour out their hearts, minds, and souls into a song, almost as if by instinct.
And so I commend you, clamavi de profundis, for making and sustaining the songs of tales almost lost. For You, all of you who work on these, are doing the work of the gods.

Is it just me or is this poem (and song) a metaphor for life the road symbolizing life with the different setting being different points in life and the "fire and sword" and the"horrors in the halls of stone" representing all the hardships you go through in the journey of life. In the end the singer's voice becomes soft like an old man telling stories of his long and eventful life. That would mean the "lightened inn" is a metaphor for death or heaven. I truly believe that this song in its essence is about a man's (or hobbit's) journey through life.
Not many things in literature are certain, but I'd say there is no clearer way of arranging a metaphor than Tolkien did in this poem.

For some unexplained reason. I'm suddenly teary eyed listening to this. It's beautiful and wonderful yet the tears and sadness are there for some reason.
I have re-read The Hobbit for the second time this month after so many years and hearing this song after reading it puts such a smile on my face while tears go down my cheeks. This is too beautiful.
It took me a long time to realize why Frodo left for Valinor at the end of Return of the King but I think the last verse explains it perfectly, Frodo had suffered greatly under the influence of The Ring, he went through severe physical and emotional trauma and he was tired, or as the poem puts it, “weary,” he wanted and deserved rest in a safe, happy, peaceful environment, and for him that was Valinor. I think Sam was also “weary” but for him Rosey and his garden in the Shire was the safe, happy, peaceful environment, that’s why when Rosey died he joined Frodo. It’s taken me a long time to understand this but this song has helped immensely.

I work in a 4th grade class and the students have all learned this beautiful song. When they sing it, its wonderful seeing each of their faces as they sing. I see some stand a little bit taller, some who are sensitive and emotional become a little more tougher, their voices come together. It brings a sense of unity to these boys and girls.

Tolkien stated in the preface to Fellowship: “I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. I much prefer history - true or feigned- with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. I think that many confuse applicability with allegory, but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author.” To Tolkien, he never intended for his works to be interpreted as allegory. He hated it. Instead, the "horrors in the halls of stone" is referring to Smaug and his attack on Thorin and Company inside Erebor. Since Bilbo wrote this song, it is written from what Bilbo experienced. Not trying to rag on ya, so don't think that I am, nor am I a "Tolkien purist". I'm just pointing it out so you understand Tolkien's perspective.

Absolutely lovely. This is the only cover that doesnnt try to make it into something grander than it is. It is a walking song, to hum and sing as you travel. So many of the covers try to make it more profound or dramatic than its purpose.
And this was (one of) the point when I thought that if there's something in The Hobbit movies that's better than LotR then it's the music. I think it's more powerful even in itself and more with this epicccc remix.
