"I think that in fact the Entwives had disappeared for good, being destroyed with their gardens in the War of the Last Alliance when Sauron pursued a scorched earth policy and burned their land against the advance of the Allies down the Anduin..."
    - J.R.R Tolkien, Letter 144 in Letters of J.R.R Tolkien.
I think this already beautiful song becomes downright heartbreaking when one remembers the Entwives likely all perished during the War of the Last Alliance. This song is the lament of lovers who'll never see each other again, despite earnest hope they will. In fact according to Tolkien, the Ents become trees or go extinct after the War of the Ring. It's a sad lost soulmate's hymm and Clamavi de Profundis once again nailed that.

It's one of the theories, but in these sort of situations I tend to favor what the author said, and Tolkien's statement on the subject indicates they are probably dead.

1:27 that's that. You hear it and immediately remember that Treebeard actually asked Merry and Pippin weather they'd seen the Ent-Wifes, just because they described where they came from
. It's a great transition and creates a sense of real distance between the Ent and Ent-Wife.

This piece of art is so beautiful I literally cried ;_; I really love the fact that each part of the song is sung differently. At first, the Ent and Ent wife was really far from each other, he sung low and she sung high, gradually they're getting closer to each other through the song, and their singing started to match better. Finally at the very end, he starts to sing high and she sings low, so that they can really fit each other and be togheter...

In the song, the Ents preferred secluded areas, the deep forrest comes to mind, easy to hide away from the sufferings of the world. The Ent-Wives seem to like more inclusive areas, they sing of fruits and flowers, I think of glades and meadows. To me, it sounds like Fangorn and The Shire. I think that, if any Ent-Wives live, they would most likely be in The Shire near Hobbiton. It is still a community, but it is still a hidden place, and the Ent-Wives enjoy caring for and growing things. Perhaps, after Sauron's War with The Last Alliance, the Ent-Wives hid in the area, befriending the Hobbits, and showed them the wonders of all things that grow, and the peace that follows, then died out long before Bilbo's Journey. I like to think that the Hobbits of The Shire are the way they are as the last act of the Ent-Wives.

"The forest is as old as time itself, and yet so to is its memory. Every step you take down this path, so too have many others done the same, and the forest recalls them all." The ents remember better than even the elves, I believe. Not for age, not even for might do I believe so, but for the fact the forests they herd; are the most sought after prize. For home, for fuel (as seen with saruman), and for refuge.

This is how tales and poems are meant too be performed. To tambourine, trumpet, and drum. Same goes for the Psalms and the Song of Songs. Same goes for the Norse mythological tales and many others. To be sung and told. It is the oral tradition. We've lost touch with it entirely. Most mythical poems and tales were not only meant to be sung but also performed in some fashion as they are told. That is what makes Tolkien's works so unique in our age. He drew heavily on the classical oral tradition for his concepts, poems, and the tales. That is why there are songs and poems throughout his tales.

What if the entwives are in the shire? Cause Sam gives an account of his cousin seeing and elm tree walking in the woods while hunting, and Elrond half elven says that the forest of fangorn and the one on the barrow downs (just east of the shire like 10-15 miles) are akin, and Gandalf states a couple times that there is a magic or power that resides in the shire. (That ladder isn’t direct) just food for thought and hope to study these works more closely and if my guesses are near the mark maybe write a little fan fiction for my children some day. Also it is stated that entwives give their love to the little things of the forest, also in the song the entwives speak of a harvest coming to town.

I hoped that in the Winter stanza the Ent would convince her, because winter forest is beautiful while winter field and garden dead. Guess she is irreformable.

This song is sung beautifully. They are so talented and as a huge Tolkien fan, all the songs that they did so far are well done. They sung all my favorite Tolkien poems, and now I can't stop listening. I hope that one day they come out with the Beren and Tinuviel peom, I'm really curious to see how they would interpret and sing the song.

William Hinton That’s relatively short to some of the stuff he’s done. He wrote half the the full Silmarillion as an Epic Poem, all just one long song

  • @surtu9221

In a way this song is sad because it's about two people who want different things in life, and are struggling to make their romance work because of that; but it's also hopeful at the end because they both mutually give up their spaces and go on into the unknown in the hopes of finding a 'place' they can both be happy. For the actual ents, this is a physical land, but on a meta level it can be compromise and overcoming binary thinking, either/or thinking, and finding a solution.

Lyrics (according to the closed captions):
When scream unfolds the peach and leaf
    And Sap is in the
When light is on the wild hold stream
And wind is on the brow
When stride is long and breath is deep
    And keen the mountain
    Come back to
    Oh
    To
    And say my land is
When spring is come to goth and field
And corn is in for blue
Like a shiny is on the fortune
    Sure
    Son apone
    Earth was free
    This field
    Oh
And will not come because my is
    When some
    Upon the
    And
    The rules of sleeping means
    The dreams of trees unfold
When woodland halls are green and cool
    And wind is in
    first
    cool
    see
    is
    When some
    Fruit and burns up
    Brown
Straw is good and it is white and
    Harvest comes to town
Nice pills and a ball swells the wind be
    Though
    Beneath the sun
    Because my land is best
When winter comes the winter wild
    That hill and would slay
    When tree shall fall
    And starless nights
Deep our a sunless day is in
    Then
    It
    I
    And all through the
    The
    Winter comes and simians
    When darkness falls at last
    When broken is
    Oh wait
And we meet again we will take me
Together we will take the road
    That leads into the world
First and four will find island
    Where both our hearts mara
    You
    You

I feel like there is a deeper and darker train of thought in this song/poem, centered around the end of the circle of all things known in Norse mythology as the day of RAGNARÖK.
This is particularly evident in the last few lines about what winter's cold days entail.
