My Dear Mother would listen to this song, she moved to London from Clare at 23, she is now 63 and very alonely(will never say) it breaks my Heart how alone she is, Never felt she could move home 😢 God be with All the Lost Souls in this world and the people Far from Home 🙏
This man deserves respect, he came to Belfast where I live when a lot of other artists would not, I have seen him many time and apart from that he has written great songs which we will have for ever, The people in N, I. will always love you for entertaining us in the dark days when other so called artists where too fearful
A one off. Makes me cry every time I hear it. Ralph is the only person who can sing it I see white horses dance on another ocean. Such a beautiful and honest way he expresses his feelings. I FINALLY was able to buy a 2nd hand copy of his album called Right side up. The cd's of this album are extremely rare. This is his album where he sings 'Clare to here'. I don't know what else to say really My words above say it all Sue Australia
This brings back memories of days long past. Sitting in the park by the lake, with good friends, bright eyes, laughter all around, singing songs, drinking wine, smoking the odd spliff, looking at a future full of great promises. And younger, so much younger than today...
For my friend Don who was an amazing mentor, editor, writer about Ireland and Scotland. He was a wonderful friend who defended those who couldn't speak for themselves. He made sure the truth of Irish history was told and defended. He will be sadly missed.
Still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck! I saw him several times in the 70s, mainly at Leeds Uni, and there are few can match him on a 12 string guitar.
Oooh, Ouch, I found him at 17 yrs old, in Australia 🇦🇺 🪃 fire 🔥 Hot Horlicks & a bunch of 🍇 🍊 & slices of 🍊.. .. .. on swot vac b4 Exams & he's always been in my heart, but I've been to Claire in South Australia 🇦🇺 ~ Brilliant mahn you know its him 💙 now! Howdy m8! 👋
Ralph once told the story of how this song came about.... He met this old Irish world war 2 veteran who told him his story. And this was pretty much it. He missed home and everything that was in it. He made promises he couldn't keep and always felt bad about it. He used to write letters home saying everything Ralph sung about in this song. War can do that to people. I don't think he ever got to see his Josephine again. ☮️☮️☮️☮️
Great job, one of the very best versions I've ever heard of this wonderful, meaningful song. I've been to Clare, and I've felt both its beauty and also its call from a long way way. I wish to return
Check out Tommy Fleming singing this beautiful song. The full production is wonderful.Tommy Fleming has an outstanding voice and he's easy on the eye.☘️
Ralph, thank you so much for this sing. If people only understood the hardship and descrimiation the Irish went under the brits they would understand why such beautiful songs. ❤ from Eire 32
I love this song. I remember Ireland and green fields of Connemara where all is slow and quiet. It remember friends around a table far from their country like modern Ulisse
"And the only time I feel alright is when I'm into drinking It sort of eases the pain of it and levels out my thinking " --- for a little while ~~~ lovely song . Reminds me of my home place -- County Clare ~~ Mike ♪♫
I remember when I first heard The brilliant Ralph McTell singing the "Streets of London "on radio Luxembourg around 1974 on a little radio I used to listen to in bed of an evening! Great talent
The song is a heartbreak, being Irish and knowing how hard it is to go home. Reading The Book that Matters Most by Ann Hood. The author mentions From Clare to Here several times.
Saw him at Cropredy this year, what a moment in time as he sung this lovely song. The sky was a lovely orange / pink/ turquoise .The 20,000 crowd hushed , and for a while one was transported into peacefullness.
Ralph played in the Guildhall in Derry recently, and while he was practicing i had the magical experience of sitting listening. I will treasure that to the day i die..
For those of us who were born in the Uk but still think of ourselves as Irish, this is what our fathers and uncles went through living and working in a stranger's land. Also listen to McAlpines Fusiliers by Dominic Behan and remember, we come from nothing small
Hi RFSKYE - This song was originally recorded by Ralph McTell on his LP "Right Side Up" in 1976 - hate to disillusion you, but it's written by an Englishman! But it's about his experiences working on a building site with Irish Navvies. Beautiful song, much covered.
I am from Brazil and lived in Ireland . It was a big surprise to discover an artist as Ralph and others Irish artists different from the mainstream showed us in Latin America.
Beautiful song. It reminds me of my beloved uncle who travelled far from home and family to weld Maggie's bloody subs as she had shut his ship yard down!
I came here for a Brazilian youtuber, the Pirula. he used this song at the end of a video about Ireland. Very good music. ps: It's been a long time, but I just remembered that now ...
I remember when I lived in London, home in Ireland grows further away as time passes without you realizing it , until it becomes a memory that you deal with from time to time
Dedicated to Phoebe Prince, a girl from Co.Clare who was harrassed to death in America, and took her life. This song from now on will bring her sadness to me. Sail on, little angel.
@june4783 ty for letting me know that little fact :) i liked him b4 but i like him even more now :) not many soo called stars give us a second look :( its great when someone as great a singer as he comes 2 our little country :)
I have just realized. it is the Wicklow mountains where the lady is standing . that's the walk on the Guinness Land At Lough Tay. That takes you to Lough Dan
yeah maybe Don McLean shared it well in his song "American Pie"....The day the music died! I would much rather listen to this kind of music than most of the crap on the radio these days. Good comment!
As a frequent visitor to Ireland and a long-term fan of Ralph McTell I love this song and would be interested if anyone can identify the lough featured at the start of this video. The picture beginning at 11 is one that I have seen several times before. Can anyone could identify the location? I reckon that the picture beginning at 27 is in the Wicklow Mountains and the one beginning at 55 appears to be somewhere in the Dingle peninsula to judge from the road sign pointing to the Conor Pass. But where exactly? It's a pity that the photo is not sharp enough for the road signs to be legible (nor the URL displayed on the side of the pub). The photo beginning at 1.09 is another one I have seen before and would tentatively identify it as a view of the Sperrins just east of Moneymore (Co. Derry) I would also tentatively identify the scene beginning at 3.03 as the southern end of the Co. Clare coast. Can anyone confirm or deny the mountains beginning at 3.17 as the Mournes?
Don't know if you'll see this as your post is from a year ago, but I believe the opening photo is Upper Lough Mask, looking toward the beach at the west end of the lake.
Going to see Ralph again in a couple of weeksafter it must be 30 years...his performance will be in a church so the accoustics may be special...I love his way with words, and his compassionate thoughts.
read a good few comments here, just want to point out that craic is an irish word meaning fun,as in the irish greeting, any craic, its just a conversation starter, not something u bate up your nose!

Sorry.. your dear Mum..🙁
Maybe try to make sure she's not quite so lonely ✌️ ❤️ 🎶 ☮️
I Love this song so much . The only time I feel alright is when I'm into drinking is spot on .
Have seen this talented man perform on many occasions, loved his music for 50 years
He is a bit London centric though

Ralph McTell is a true treasure.

Beautiful words I can relate to

Such a lovely song.Ralph,you're a legend.
Just one of Ralph McTell's extensive repertoire of brilliant songs.
Super underrated song.Never tire of this gem.
"underrated" only by someone who has zero musical knowledge and a limited vocabulary.

This is so touching...I like this guy since I heard him when I was fourteen.....and this is 41 years ago....
One of the finest songwriters these Islands have ever produced.
Great post elltell1990...
For my friend Don who was an amazing mentor, editor, writer about Ireland and Scotland. He was a wonderful friend who defended those who couldn't speak for themselves. He made sure the truth of Irish history was told and defended. He will be sadly missed.

I was never so far from Ireland as when I was in London.
This is a most mature and articulate performance of an amazingly powerful song. Respect.

This song is a masterpiece, makes a nice change to hear this rather than the crap that’s about these days.
Have loved this song since Nanci Griffith recorded it! So glad I was able to hear this beautiful original recording! Thanks a million!!
Ralph, thank you so much for this sing. If people only understood the hardship and descrimiation the Irish went under the brits they would understand why such beautiful songs. ❤ from Eire 32
A consumate storyteller and chronicler of the ordinary man....and the voice? Amazing
Wonderful songwriter and performer. I saw Ralph McTell at the Main Point about 40 years ago and still remember his beautiful solo performance.

This song was written for Noel Murphy by Relph McTell, they were both living around west london, Putney to be precise.
Where's he been all my life. Just hearing of Ralph McTell now and I've been around since 1959.
Keep searching the airwaves Patty. You'll find 1000s of delightful surprises out there. Have you ever heard Don McLean's "Mountains of Mourne"?

Also listen to McAlpines Fusiliers by Dominic Behan and remember, we come from nothing small
I had to find this after hearing it on radio 2 too!!
Thankyou Ken Bruce!!
Thank you luke and I agree. Mr McTell is under-rated. Streets Of London was great but he's written so many other forgotten classics.
Hi RFSKYE - This song was originally recorded by Ralph McTell on his LP "Right Side Up" in 1976 - hate to disillusion you, but it's written by an Englishman! But it's about his experiences working on a building site with Irish Navvies. Beautiful song, much covered.

This is one of my favourite Irish songs next to Dannyboy and Carrickfergus (I'm German). My Dad often sang this to me when I was younger.

I'm familiar with Nany Griffith's version, it's nice to hear the original (but I still like Nancy's version very much).
Craic!!
Thanks for the note Crewman. It did sound like they were working for drugs. Show's how uncultured I am.

Traveled to Exeter to see Ralph but the only song he didnt play was Clare, gutted
same happend in italy =/
