    Holy moly - this video broke the news to me! I know nothing so far, but whenever a coaster burns down - especially one at a park in financial trouble - it’s very often an inside job of arson.
    What a shame.

      The demolition had started before the fire, so it was clear it was coming down. The fire spreading just expedited the process.

    Conneaut is a park that I so badly wanted to see succeed. It certainly had the bones to be a classic park akin to Knoebels. It's a shame that this is how CLP and Blue Steak's story ends. I always thought the villains from 80s underdog sports movies were too cheesy to exist, and then Todd Joseph came along.

    • @icerleaf
      @icerleaf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cannot blame Todd Joseph for this. He's the only one who looks at Conneaut without rose colored nostalgia goggles. We all loved Conneaut when it was thriving, but everything else in the park already burned down at least once, sometimes two or three times. That's decades worth of investment literally up in smoke. There was never enough money to maintain what they had, much less bring it all back to whatever glory it may have enjoyed, all while updating it for the changing times. There is too much other competition. There are a lot of more thrilling rides at places that don't show 30 years of decay front and center. It's sad, and Todd Joseph may seem like a villain, but he's not wrong.

    We used to have a house on the lake, so I grew up going to this park all summer and then took my kids there. When we went back last summer and saw he ripped the whole midway down, it was obvious he was preparing for some condos or housing. Went back for the Pumpkin Fest and even more rides gone. @@muffinknight8101 Todd Joseph did show respect towards those who have fond memories of the park.
      What many people do not realize is how bad the condition of the rides & park property was in.
      Many years of neglect & the fact that the maintenance of the park had been in the hands of volunteers for a long period of time.
      Those volunteers were very dedicated & hard working, but without the proper funds and equipment, it was impossible to accomplish what they had hoped to.
      Communication between the park owner & those interested in what was happening with the park ended when he was bombarded with insults and threats & the rumors and false statements started being spread about the decisions he was making concerning the future of the park.
      He did open it for one season.
      Unfortunately, attendance at the park was very dismal, as it had been for many seasons, even prior to covid.
      There were a very few days that the park had anything that would be considered a crowd.
      At that time, I believe he realized things were not going to be able to move forward under the current conditions.

      Often times when you are the one who has to make the difficult business decisions, those decisions are not popular with the ones not familiar with the business end of the decision making.

  • @slim9559
    @slim9559 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just a few facts:
    The coater did not burn down.
    While the coaster was being torn down, the fire from the burning rubble spread to the loading/ breaking pavilion of the ride.
    The fire was extinguished before it reached the track that was still standing.
    As of today (01/12/2022) about half of the track & frame is still standing, scheduled to be torn down as soon as weather permits.
    There was nothing illegal about the tearing down of the blue streak.
    The correct permits had been attained beforehand.
    It is very sad to see the coaster gone, however, it was in bad shape & it would have taken a huge monetary investment to make it viable again.
    On a positive note:
    Todd Joseph (Owner of the park) did donate one of the original Vettel cars & pieces of the track & frame from the ride to the Conneaut Lake Historical Museum.
    The Vettel cars haven’t been used since the ‘60s, they have been in storage at the park.
    The museum will be putting together a very nice interactive display with the donated items.
    Unfortunately, nothing can replace the blue streak, but the owner of the park has made an effort to insure that future generations will at least be able to able to see, touch & enjoy some pieces of its history.

I believe this park needed someone who had the capital to add a new coaster while also doing the retrack. While far from unexpected, given the way things went at CLP this year, it still saddens me immensely. Yeah, Blue Streak was rough. It was also sketchy and in need of serious work. It may have been the scariest coaster I ever rode, certainly one of the few I worried about falling down as I rode. All that said, I still loved the violent rides this gave me. Conneaut Lake Park, and the Hotel Conneaut had so much potential. Todd Joseph is essentially a fool with a little bit of money. I went 18 years ago for a weeks vacation and the area was booming and showed so much potential, I returned this past summer and it was depressing to say the least. I walk into the lobby of the Hotel Conneaut and to a guy smoking weed while holding a baby. I wanted to walk past Elizabeth's room, the famed ghost, and the hallway is locked and you have to pay to walk down the hall. As I was walking through the hotel a strange man followed us, he was sixty, and flirting with my 23 year old daughter. I then find out that the only draw to the park/hotel was burnt to the ground, "accidentally," while burning weeds. Who the hell burns weeds near an antique roller coaster? I attended the all night ERT for the grand reopening in 1997. They ran a 4-car train, which made for a faster ride with even wilder air time over those first three hills. For those who could withstand the beatdown it gave you, it was an absolute classic. It was as pure and thrilling as anything you would ever hope to ride. But everything about Blue Streak's untamed violence was on full display even then. You want to talk about jackhammering in the valleys? This was an all night event. Some of the ACE crazies were out there trying to rack up sheer numbers of circuits. (I think I ended up in the high 20s.) People would be waiting in line to go, but Car 3 Seat 3, nicknamed "Square Wheels" by the middle of the night, would go up empty. In its heyday, Blue Streak would get a solid 9 from me. I am glad to have those memories. They soften the blow of Blue Streak's slow and inevitable demise.

I sat by myself in the back, I was genuinely scared and excited at same time! I would have my hands up and find one quickly going down to grab the bar like I was riding a bucking bronco! Best coaster in Colorado. The wild Chipmunk is pretty great also for being a 70 +year old coaster as well. I guess Lakeside is the #1 janky park in the country now. Love the video, grew up riding Blue Streak, and Kennywoods coasters, the family even had a cottage up there till a few years ago. Blue Streak was once a GREAT ride. It really sucked its last couple years. When really did in CLP besides lack of investment from owners in the 90s, is in the late 90s to mid 2010s when Waldameer really started to expand and all that, people who wanted something different in Pittsburgh from Kennywood and a weekend out, went up another 30 minutes to Waldameer to experience modern rides, bigger beach and the best state park right down the road. I knew this was coming for years. Still sad tho.That being said, its still a GREAT area for boating, fishing, camping, good local food, winery tours, great lakes and hotels.

      @@CanobieCoaster CLP did, but as I said I had a Cottage on that lake as well as a boat. It was in REALLY bad shape, and was never really busy. If your the GP its easy to skip CLP and go to Waldameer. The attraction in that area isnt the park, its the lake itself. Its one of the few lakes in the area with lots of beaches and no power restrictions on your boat, so its popular with boaters who like to go fast and go water skiiing, or tubing. And beach goers, the other lakes dont offer the same, all the lakes around it have a 20 horsepower limit, cant ski with that. The park woulda been a great attraction if it was still in awesome shape

The volunteers took so much pride, i looked forward to updates on their Facebook page. I remember them painting the checkered pattern on the bumper car building, it was a total blast (teen dance club?) . This was 2017 or so, right after the waterpark area was spruced up, there was hope. It was an amazing vacation, we stayed at the hotel.
    This is a terrible shame, but the guys history isn't exactly noteworthy.
    Maybe hell bring in another coaster so that too can show up for sale on a used ride merchant site immediately after like every other ride that was brought in. Invite more drunken crowds to the beaches, who knows.
