This idea of forgetting perspective is so freeing. I have always felt afraid to draw because I don't really get perspective (spatial awareness isn't a strong suit) but to learn that I can still make effective drawings without perspective just feels revolutionary.

You should learn it. It may feel freeing, but perspective isn't hard. It's a myth. Don't let not knowing it stop you from drawing, but don't let being able to draw stop you from taking 15 minutes to learn it, and the few days it takes to master it. It is especially useful if you don't have good visual memory.

@@nickbernstein I *have* been trying to learn it, for years. Some people's brains just work differently, and I haven't found a course, book, or any other tutorial that addresses that. I can draw and do other things without learning perspective, and I'm perfectly content.

Thank you. the web is saturated with people who draw Perfect and for a beginning adult this approach helps a lot. Congratulations, good work!

Thank you so much for showing this. I was always concerned about perspective and that is why was always reluctant to paint or draw. Wonderful instruction.

You are a breath of fresh air for sure!! I nearly gave up my desire for drawing and painting because nothing I was making looked "perfect" and I started believing that I am useless at this - You made me believe in myself again with your "no perfection - ignore perspective" approach. I love it!! Thank you so much.

That's so much fun. Painting and drawing at the same time is definitely what I was looking for. Since I love painting and drawing and can't pick one only. Thank you, that was sooo helpful 😭😭🫂🫂💗

I took drafting in high school and college (where it was called "engineering graphics") and as a result I find it simply impossible to ignore perspective in my drawings....they really beat that into you in school.

In life, we are already so dominated by our beliefs of "right" and "wrong", and consequently judge ourselves if we find it difficult to conform to them. Letting go, freeing ourselves sounds easy to do, though I suspect I'll be clutching tightly to habits that imprison me, for a while! Going to try, all the same. Thanks for this encouragement. 🤗😉

Thank you for this! Even though I think straight lines and correct perspective are boring, this extra encouragement helps a lot. It makes the process and the result so much more enjoyable.

Wonderful. Be like a kid. Who cares about all the rules. Just have fun and express yourself. (I have to remind myself of this often, even though I sounded so sage-like just now.)

Thank you for your motivation. With the tought in mind, that i mustn‘t draw exactly correct to get a good outcome, encourages me to practice regulary and with a lot more fun. Greetings from switzerland 🇨🇭

@@jamesaritchie1 fair enough James, but (and there's always a but), I think perhaps he was warning about being too anal at first and adding unnecessary pressure to the task, rather than just getting used to drawing, then adding perspective techniques later 😉

How do you make a mistake "purposely" if you don't know how to make it correctly? What I feel you are promoting is like, instructing to loading a gun with the wrong kind of ammunition... it will eventually, backfire. Ouch! HOWEVER this is not to say breaking rules or skipping them can not make art that is valued. AKA cubism or abstraction . Was it Picasso who said, "I spent a lifetime trying to draw like a child"? My point is YES do what is fun and if you like it GREAT. But if you feel you are missing something don't run from it. It is far more fulfilling to know the techniques and break them than to later become frustrated because you know that something is off and you haven't taken the time to investigate why or how to do it which seems more correct. The effort taken today will lead you down the road tomorrow to a better destination. Make the effort to get there.

This is just adding to the myth that perspective is hard. It's not. Spending the 15 minutes you need to learn basic perspective makes everything so much easier. If you decide not to use it as a style, that's fine, but everyone who does art seriously should understand it.
