  • If you have seen a wildfire with helicopters attacking it then you will have probably seen a bright orange pumpkin looking thing dropping water on the flames. Those pumpkins are known as Bambi Buckets and in this video,
    I show you all about the water buckets and how pilots get them ready to go off and wage war against mother nature!

    My love of aviation began at a very young age and the fascination of everything that flies still lives to this day. This TH-cam channel is a mix of aircraft doing their thing or answering questions to some of the most commonly asked aviation questions.
    My day job as a full-time helicopter pilot allows me to dive deep into the topics and bring you up close and personal with many aircraft and the more questions I get in the comments the more videos I can create for you to answer those questions.
    Being able to fly is a real privilege and taking you along for the ride when I can is something that I love to do!
    Enjoy!

    Living in rural Oregon in a forested area, I can't express my appreciation for you guys and the gear. One of the most interesting TH-cam's I've seen.
    Some years ago, Columbia helicopters placed huge logs in bundles of 3 in the creek near our place for salmon habitat. Perfectly placed high about the tree canopy.

    Why is there a basket at the side of the helicopter

    • @PilotTeacher
      @PilotTeacher  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Craig.
      The basket is called a utility basket and we use it to carry long items of equipment, large items that we don’t want in the cabin with passengers or things like jerry cans of gas for pumps and chainsaws.
      It can fit 300lbs of gear and we use them ALL the time.
      Oh, and they make a great sun lounger too when you take the cushions off the rear seats and lay them on top while waiting!
      I hope this answers your question.

    Why not use ch-47 Chinook helicopters? if I'm not mistaken they could carry more load

    • @PilotTeacher
      @PilotTeacher  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do but there are not many around. The buckets come in a range of sizes so pretty much any helicopter can put on a bucket and be utilized to help control a wildfire.

    • @PilotTeacher

      No there is always some rippling on the water with a 100-150ft line. Not sure on the big 250ft lines the heavies use.

    How many liters of water the bucket can hold

    • @PilotTeacher
      @PilotTeacher  ปีที่แล้ว

      This particular bucket holds around 800 litres and the biggest holds just shy of 10,000 liters. Each bucket is matched to the lifting capacity of the helicopter.
      The largest bucket is for helicopters like the Chinook.

  • @BobHolowenko

    Hundreds of these flying around my area (North Central BC) again this year. What does one of these weigh when fully dipped?

    • @PilotTeacher
      @PilotTeacher  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Bob,
      The smaller buckets used on the Astars hold around 220 gallons and weigh around 2000lb when full. Then they go up in many sizes to suit the maximum lifting power of each helicopter.
      The biggest buckets used on the Chinooks can hold around 2500 gallons of water and weigh 22,000lb.

  • @ronwastney2530
    @ronwastney2530 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Way too complicated.
    In NZ most buckets work of electric over pneumatic ie air supply comes directly from the turbine via a pneumatic control valve connected to the helo electrics running to the cyclics.
    Most of the buckets here are 1000L . The pilot can then regulate the amount of water he want by just flicking the switch on the cyclics to open and close the bucket hatch.
    There is a brake away air coupling tied to the aircraft for emergency jettison purposes.
    How do I know ,I built the prototype Dewdrop buckets.

    • @PilotTeacher
      @PilotTeacher  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Ron,
      Sounds like a pretty neat idea. I have only ever seen the Bambi’s and FAST buckets over here but I would like to see how your design operates.

    • @ronwastney2530
      @ronwastney2530 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PilotTeacher I know of a couple of the Dewdrop buckets are here in Nelson NZ so Iay be able to get some pics of the set up and send to you.
      I still have the original plans I drew on graph paper but since the design was given away to a commercial manufacturer there maybe a some slight changes.
      I used to work for NZ Forest Sevice Rural Fire and my boss at the time Barry Hawker started the first build which I completed then built two more after he transferred.
      The Forest service was disbanded and so we lost the experimental work that NZ was known for.

    Great explanation! What is the minimum power (hp) requirement for a helicopter to carry that bucket of water? Thx!

    • @PilotTeacher
      @PilotTeacher  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are many buckets sizes to suit every size of helicopter and the weight that helicopter can carry. It not really a horsepower issue per se, but more of matching the buckets full weight to the weight the helicopter can lift.

    • @ramonbs6075
      @ramonbs6075 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PilotTeacher Maybe my question is if any helicopter can be a firefighter helicopter or if there is some type of specific requirements by design and/or by power. Can a passenger helicopter becomes a firefighter helicopter?

    • @PilotTeacher
      @PilotTeacher  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ramon,
      Any helicopter can be equipped with a cargo hook and have a waterbucket slung to it. The smaller machines tend not to be used as the amount of water they can carry is not that much, making them quite inefficient.
      The specialist fire attack helicopters that are fitted with tanks are all converted from regular passenger carrying, ex-military machines and run under a Restricted Category preventing them from carrying people.
      Some of the helicopters that have a Belly Tank fitted to them are allowed to carry passengers/firecrews until they drop the snorkel used for filling the tank. At this point they become a restricted category and are unable to carry passengers.
      If they are then required to carry passengers again, the firecrews will usually hook the snorkel back into its stowed position when the helicopter lands and then they can be transported again.
