Favorite cards are way more important to me than best cards because its a happy topic with fond memories. A card can be awful and I could have a blast playing it.
Roaming throne has been one of my favorites this year. I’ve had some fun getting double triggers in a vampire deck. I had an Amalia Benavides up to 16/16 with Elas il-Kor out. And man, you are worth the $3/ month. I hope more people are able to become Patreon subscribers in the year to come.
Raging battle mouse is the card i had the most fun with. Cost reduction is just fun and makes you also think about sequencing to take advantage of it. Urabrask is another card i had a lot of fun with. Usually together with the battle mouse to enable "storm" turns in standard.
1000 moon smithy is alot of fun. Ive been using it in alot of decks as well but i really like casting it and then next turn i cast guardian of ghirapur and target Ole Smithy and then bam another smithy token. Feels good
My favorites were Invasion of Fiora and Horned Loch-Whale. I love decks with lots of removal and a handful of finishers and these were both on the same card.
I’ll add to the list I have been loving Amy (Amalia) cause of the like 100 or so games I have played in commander/historic brawl aswell as standard I have gotten her to pop maybe like 5 times and everytime I get some kind of compliment be it a Nice from my opponent on arena or a wow from the pod, and that just feel good
Ginger brute is my favorite reprint of the year, it fits in every artifact agro deck, applies early pressure, and is an unblockable finisher in the late game.
I started playing at the end of LOTR this year. I love so many cards on your list I'm compelled to check out the ones I haven't. Also love WOE! Great list!
The Urabrask Forge is probably my most favorite card of this year. I tried to build decks around it and it actually works not bad in a rakdos braids pile.
Urabrask's Forge is a monster of a card. Personally, I play a lot of Brawl on Arena, and a turn 2-3 Forge in Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer is a legit win-con.
ngl, Dev, with how you stepped up your youtube game this year, I'd be totally down for that "every card is orcish bowmaster except for number 3 One ring", getting massive videogamedunkey vibes from this joke 🤣
I've had a lot of fun building around Kutzil, Malemet Exemplar in historic. It's got me to Mythic twice. It doesn't always fare well against Radkos but it's fun when it works.
Favourite card printed this year will be Sentinel of the Nameless City. Low-key simple. There are 1923 new cards printed this year as per scryfall (game:paper year:2023 not:reprint l:en)
Just wanted to say that I love the concept of this video. Like you say, "best cards videos" are a dime a dozen, but your favorite cards was a novel approach. I dig it!
My favorite thing from this year is the development team continuing to do sneaky great things in the saga design space. Having sagas with a negative final chapter (princess takes flight) in a set alongside stockpiling celebrant and bargain was phenomenal. My favorite moment of the year was pulling off the Yenna Redtooth Regent + three blind mice exponential mice combo in draft. My favorite single card, still on the saga theme, is Goldberry River daughter. The ability to remove counters from a saga to rebuy chapters (at instant speed!) Is something I've been dreaming off for a while and it actually happened! Anyway, love the content and here's to more saga shenanigans in 2024
With exception to the white cards and the frog I've built 1 deck, with many variations that included the whole list, like 6 cards. And it's all I really play... from Fable/Facebreaker/Mirkwood Bats/Parallel Live/Acidic Slime/black Cavalier/ etc. schinanigans to a more streamlined: Spiteful Banditry/Urabrask's Forge/Parallel Lives/Stimulus Package/Gnottvold Slumbermound enabled by deadly dispute package and a whole bunch of jund removal. Forge is so good, just stick it in a control deck. And voila, you have a clock on turn 3. Surprise! 8 4/4 trample trolls on your end step. Mirkwood Bats can get really really nutty with Fable and PLives lol. I see you're feeling pretty comfortable with your 100 life lifegain deck. Be a shame if I summoned 4 Mirkwood bat tokens that are going to sacrifice themselves at end of turn, with 1 mana. He just created 8 copies of Acidic Slime... He just resurrected his whole graveyard with 4 tokens of black cavalier and sacrificed the tokens.
Goro-Goro and Satoru is my favorite card of the year. Such incredible design that plays so nice with so many already fun mechanics. I made a commander deck with it and had a truly excellent time with it so far!
My favorite card of the year is easily Botanical Brawler. It is simple, elegant, powerful, and synergistic. Rounding out my top 10, in no particular order, are Palantir of Orthanc; Invasion of Gobakhan // Lightshield Array; Annex Sentry; Vat of Rebirth; Khenra Spellspear // Gitaxian Spellspear; Deeproot Wayfinder; Likeness Looter; Nahiri's Resolve; and Andúril, Flame of the West. My favorite set of the year was Phyrexia: All Will Be One. I think I need more time with The Lost Caverns of Ixalan to find cards I really like from the set; I only got to play around with them for a month on Arena before Khans dropped. The ten commanders I was most excited to build around were Tazri, Stalwart Survivor; Ioreth of the Healing House; King of the Oathbreakers; Faramir, Prince of Ithilien; Shelob, Child of Ungoliant; Yargle and Multani; Calix, Guided By Fate; Hylda of the Icy Crown; Narset, Enlightened Exile; and Zimone and Dina. Rashmi and Ragavan and Brenard, Ginger Sculptor also really intrigued me, but, sadly, they aren't on Arena.
I think I would’ve picked wilds of eldrain as my favorite set of the year except I didn’t do very good in draft 😭 but for me I think it was lord of the rings because that set was super cool to me and surprisingly fun/entertaining to play.
Lotta love for the poison dart frog 🙌 Excited to dig through all my Aura's to build Eriette too! I think My favourite card of the year has to be Hakbal of the Surging Soul, That thing goes off in a very fun way!
Ooooh I'll check out your boy, Bart. Yo! That Showcase foil one is ordered (x4 for under $2)! Incredible art yet again by Pig Hands. He's done some amazing bangers for MTG. "Bar-tow-low-may"
I don’t think they’re from this year. But for me, it’s DMU and CLB. I bought set boxes for each and had a blast opening them and then making decks for my wife and I. And we’ve been playing again for the first time in years. Been a blast
I've really been liking Chimil the immortal sun. If that resolves it is usually game over. Palantir from Lotr is another and then realmbreaker the invasion tree. I've always loved artifacts so those are my top three of the year. One thing I'm looking forward to is if monogreen can be a top tier meta deck again. Chimil has helped it out, IMHO, but it just never quite works
Hey Devinski, if you’re ever looking for more ideas for sweet nourishing content to spoonfeed all of us sbmtg babies with, you hinted at one I’ve wanted to suggest with your #3 pick discush: update some of those badass deck techs you dropped earlier in the season once we’re a few more sets deeper into it (I mean who wouldn’t wanna see what your mono white aggrifacts deck looks like now?).
@@michaelgriffith7033 Do you like it when you are playing it ? Facing it is indeed not that fun, to only thing in your mind is to get rid of it at that moment.
@@drphil36 I don't own one in paper or Arena. I could use a wild card to make one, but haven't seen the need. I'll let others dominate the field with that devastating card. :-)
The KISS principle applies to magic cards. Keep it simple stupid! I love cards that don't make me feel like I'm taking honors English. Your list is very unique and much appreciated!
My favorite card of 2023 is Questing Druid. This card helped out aggro, midrange, and tempo decks alike in almost all of the formats it's legal. Not an oppressive card, just one good enough to play and help fair archetypes. Can't thank RnD enough for it.
The dungeons and dragons that was far and away my all-time favorite scent of all time ever ever and I will never be over it. I made a playmat with the three dungeons on it. It is the only magic I will play. I have been ruined.
Imo artwise I need to be able to quickly have an idea of what is on the card upside down. Old cards because of that are my favorite mostly. In nowadays cards sometimes I have a hard time seeing what is going on looking straight at the card :X Not that they are not great artworks! But magic cards are a rather small canvas :P
this year has been bittersweet to me. My friends and I have officially stopped taking in new content either on youtube or arena itself. We as well as many other people have grown tired of this bs standard. were basically back to where we were back in Eldraine. It's not fun to play, the 3yr rotation is one of the worst ideas they could have come up with, and it's just stale. People talk about how diverse it is, but every deck depending on the color has the same bullshit cards that have existed for years now. I hate feeling like this as I have been playing magic sine 1997. However, maybe a break will be good for us and others who just want to continue loving the game, but not wanting to give hasbro any more money.
Sweet list, Dev. Sshoutout to WoE! What a fun set. March of the Machine was the all-star set of the year for me. I love battles, multiverse legends, and all the sick art from that set.
Faerie Mastermind was this year? Wilds of Eldraine was the best set of the year. I don't understand why people are so excited about Presedio sacrifice boy (Commander has Yahenni, Carrion Feeder, and Viscera seer above him) or apple woman art. I got really excited to build Hylda so maybe she's the orzhov Hylda but there are enough enchantment's that Killian Ink Duelist would seem to fit the same bill. Mirkwood bats was a triumph and I can't wait until regal rotates out of stanard and commander players forget about it. If you like Regal you might also like Cruel Somnophage. Love you Dev.
I missed the Coffee Break, where Dev would mention the disappointing cards of 2023... My favorite 2023 cards are Invasion to Tolvada, Thousand Moon Smithy, Breach the Multiverse, and All Will Be One...
I too have a large soft spot for Eriette. I run her in an Orzhov Aura’s deck in Historic and although it’s not ridiculously powerful it is an awful lot of fun to play. Also glad to see Mirkwood Bats on the list. I love how my opponents often have to read the card when I play it, then scramble to kill it after dropping a Mondrak after a Wedding Announcement 👍

Got to mythic with a Bartolome agatha's cauldron vampire deck! fun card
I like that you chose to do a favorite cards list instead of a best cards list. So much more interesting :)
Have a great time Dev and a happy new year!
As for favorite card of this year.. Huh, tough to say. I guess Etali is a fun one.
I've played monstrous rage and cacophony scamp in so many decks this year, it's just great.
Raging battle mouse is the card i had the most fun with. Cost reduction is just fun and makes you also think about sequencing to take advantage of it.
Urabrask is another card i had a lot of fun with. Usually together with the battle mouse to enable "storm" turns in standard.

Tough cookie is my favorite card of the year, such a sweet design
I love how your abzan mind works... one red card, a little green frog, and orzhov!....
Hammerskull holds a special place in my heart. Dinos are my first ever mtg deck that I built. Love my big dummies 😭
Love Hammerskull, he makes my paper and digital Dino decks stomp hard, he’s a good lizard boy
I also love Wilds of Eldraine and my favorite card has been The Goose Mother because I was able to play so many cool cards from that set in it.
My favorites were Invasion of Fiora and Horned Loch-Whale. I love decks with lots of removal and a handful of finishers and these were both on the same card.
I’ll add to the list I have been loving Amy (Amalia) cause of the like 100 or so games I have played in commander/historic brawl aswell as standard I have gotten her to pop maybe like 5 times and everytime I get some kind of compliment be it a Nice from my opponent on arena or a wow from the pod, and that just feel good
Bart being #1 is the most predictable thing ever, but I, too, am an aristocrats aficionado, so fully agree.
Aw man spoiled by youtube lifting ur comment to the top
Out of the whole list, the Forge has been my favorite to play with this year. Great list Dev!
Tidebinder is probably my favorite card of the year. It's a clean answer to almost every problem card printed in the past couple years.
How to spot the control player. :P
(No hate, I love control.)
@@idlemindedmage6925 Actually not a control player. Just tired of watching my opponents solitaire.
@@stormycat0905 that's how it starts... that's how it always starts....

Dev, Inti has reignited my desire to actually build decks. It's now in 2 of my cubes, and 3 modern decks. Do you have anything brewing for standard?
I was interested in your views as most of my top 10 wouldn't be standard cards... 3 would probably be Doctors...
Poison Dart Frog is one of my favorite cards as well. Straight forward, fun and interactive.
I've had a lot of fun building around Kutzil, Malemet Exemplar in historic. It's got me to Mythic twice. It doesn't always fare well against Radkos but it's fun when it works.
I'm out of magic (again) this year but I'll still give this a watch and a like

Fun video. I liked your personal take on each card. I agree with everything you said about Poison Dart Frog.
My DnD character's name is Werthers Original
For the opening question, perhaps a connection between sweetness, comfort and looking backwards?
With exception to the white cards and the frog I've built 1 deck, with many variations that included the whole list, like 6 cards. And it's all I really play...
