2018 G&S Opera Sydney: Ruddigore Act One

G&S Opera Sydney's Production of Ruddigore, presented under the name of The Ghosts of Ruddigore (with permission from Opera della Luna), but it is the traditional telling of the story.

Excepting the sets, this production was perfect. Costumes are particularly impressive. Acting - especially by chorus - is great. Singing and orchestra - excellent. Persons photographing this production - awful!

Fair costuming, good choral singing and orchestra but no scenery, no lighting control and bad sound sync at the start. Mad Margaret shows promise.

From my understanding, productions in the time of Gilbert and Sullivan featured simple sets, partly to keep attention on the players.
Fair voices? Ha. They are wonderfully in personna, in tune, and overall understandable…

Compliments to the costume department, but the camera work makes this unwatchable. Someone please give the sewing maid some lessons so she doesn't try to use the thing backwards with nothing on the sewing surface in future.

Why do we feel the constant need to swoop when delivering Gilbert's dialogue? Audiences don't hear the jokes when actors do that.

This is not the professional Sydney Opera, but one of the many semi-pro/amateur groups keeping G&S alive. One has to look generously on the enthusiasm, spirit - and in this case, better performances by the principals than is usual, and creative scenery.
