Innovation has to be the most misused word in corporate language nowadays. Innovation is now defined by "doing something you weren't doing before even if it's been around for a century"

I see your innovation and I raise you one "synergy" where people use it as "making sure we are not being redundant" instead of "how can we multiply the effect of two products / systems / ... that can feed off of each other"

My former boss trumpeted his 'innovations' of putting a fence along a walkway and purchasing a barely-functioning, universally reviled proximity warning system, and because _his_ bosses are corporate numbskulls he got all the praise imaginable - for making our work harder to do with debatable safety benefit. Not a thing about any of it was innovative.

So, to conclude, innovation is finding new real solutions to real problems rather than just trying to be unique or different. Being different won't matter if it still sucks.

I looked it up and google says the definition of innovation is “the action or process of innovating.” I kept digging. It’s from Latin meaning innovus (in meaning into and novus meaning new), then innovare (into make new) and then innovate. So I took it as we want to look into something or somewhere (or ourselves) and make (or find) a new way of seeing or doing something. And it should be big enough to change how the industry of that item functions, not just the function of the item itself. Or even better, it creates a totally new industry that never existed before.

Effectively managing innovation in engineering research organizations has been a passion of mine for long, and for the last year and a half, that is what I have been doing through my brand, Invenk Solutions
The process of finding the right balance between innovation and efficiency is very tricky, and doing that for my clients is the bedrock of my business. It is very exciting and challenging most times; a continuous research I'm pursuing, and was also the crux of my TEDx talk last year.
When I came across the title of this video, it was such a pleasant shock. I have uttered these same words several times in my workshops over the last year! This is a validation I never imagined would come; something that confirms that my path is fine and I should keep at it.
I'll surely walk ahead more confident. Thank you Simon. :)

My career motivation never truly recover from that moment 5 years ago.

Completely agree. Buying new stuff or coming up with another company system is not innovation. In fact very often it is anti-innovation as Elon Musk once stated. A lot of people think that innovation results in cost savings due to making something cheaper, lighter stronger faster etc... It could be all of those things but almost always innovation involves investment and thus cost upfront. The reason why there is lack of innovation is because Accountant/finance sit at the top of management or the incentive structure in most businesses is anti-innovation and pro efficiency, lean etc.

I agree with the sentiment, however for clarity the primary reason buttons were installed for projector screens was to allow them to be accessable for disabled users who were unable to reach the cord. Just because a change to a product is not immediately evident does not mean that it wasn't an innovative improvement.

Innovation costs time and money. A lot of both. But we have become so enamored with speed (just look at higher ed squashing semesters into 4-week classes) without realizing the extreme cost of that speed. Remember when we used to say, "Anything worth doing is worth doing well"? Now, it's become a joke. If you can't do it right, fast, the first time, it's a waste of time.

"The worst thing we can do is cut people off when they believe in something"
Sometimes leaders/CEOs/CIOs have hard time believing in people in simple roles who have passion. One-time working in non-profit org we were working on discovery and we were getting just close to something when redundancy was announced. All I asked to the CIO was let me work here 1 more month. They were paying 1 month worth of redundancy package anyway. But he wouldn't budge. I understand his insecurities, but I left with a heart break. As an employee, a Passion project can be found in your workplace .. But letting you deliver value, solve a real problem is up-to the leadership no matter how hard we try. @Simon Sinek What would be your advice to a worker like me? How to find a place to work where the passion is regarded, status-quo can be challenges and it is allowed to deliver real value?

It is also true that you have to know as much as you can about how the current efficiency is achieved, to suggest innovation that is gonna be effective for a purpose.

What I’ve seen is that people don’t want their problems solved. In fact they get angry if one solves their problem. I have come to the conclusion many want something to complain about, remove that and they get angry at you as you remove their excuses.
I can understand that there might be something else that is wrong that causes this attitude, but I never been in a position were I could affect anything else than technical issues they complain about.
Funny my dad has the very exact experience. He solved a ventilation issue at a factory. People complained that the new system didn’t work even had put a 2 by 4 in a fan to fix it. My dad ripped out a expensive Siemens system. And made his own and documented it. 3 independent consultants were brought in to find a fault with what he made. All of them come to the conclusion that it is as documented and just needed one piece he wasn’t authorized to buy to have 100% functionality.
All got angry when the problem was solved. Some stopped talking to him.
I’ve been bullied as I saw solutions rather than complained about the same things. Still in the same company but in a different department, previous department is still a problem department with burnouts and bullying.

Take your studies seriously and learn as much as you can. In all of your subjects find the thing that interests you and master that area. Don't be afraid to explore electives in other areas of study unrelated to your degree. Practice learning, sometimes its not about whether you like what you are studying, but how you can study and learn effectively. Hard work and putting effort in your studies is more important than being intelligent or being passionate about what you are doing.
Being able to learn efficiently and effectively is a skill that will be very useful in the later part of your life. Not everything in the working world will be something you enjoy and not all problems you will solve are related to that which interests you.
Get into a good life style that is 70% regular and routine. Don't forget to have fun and be as social as you can. Make friends and expand your circle of friends, but also find a close circle of good and best friends that are sincere, genuine and authentic. Let these 4 years be a time where you have a ton of experiences, cultivate your mindset and widen you perspective in and of life.
You are young, and its best time of your life to make the most out of your youth. In whatever you do, do it to the best that you can. Remember its better to fail and make mistakes than to regret missed opportunities and lack of taking action.

Ehm innovation is R&D, university projects, prototyping etc. and OBVIOUSLY isn't supposed to be effective. At least not just yet. Reusing the same parts for an assembly of a product is effective until you realise modifications are needed. But most of the time who cares if unit no. 576 breaks of 1000000 units in total? Still this is effective! But let's say you're in aerospace industry and reuses this sort of thinking while having in mind that multiple errors might occur. How do you counter that? By betting on your R&D! If the product becomes to critical to use, effeciency is less important vs the cost to do continuous analysing in order to actually understand your product.
So basically if you don't care what you are delivering then effeciency could be the way to go while innovation will give you a much more caring attitude in combination with a deeper knowledge of your product.

    I respectfully disagree.
    Innovation "in fact" is efficient...
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, it's never too late to start.
Defining your values...define what you value, and then you refine your definitive belief(s) creating a systematic approach to achieving your personal peace...its a journey we're all on.
How you define peace should be a product of what's within as well as what's without.
Oscar Wilde says "we are about own devil's creating our own hell"...I say we are our own god's creating our own heavens. There is always a choice. I chose innovation, because we cannot solve the problems of tomorrow with the solutions from yesterday. Innovation is a necessity.

Innovation leads to efficiency. The process of innovation itself is not because it is experimental and requires a lot of trial and error.

@@mrbennett obviously innovation is perspective just as efficiency...this is why the innovators are the innovators, because they see things differently. Conversing with that of a narrow minded field of vision is like trying to have a conversation about foreign policy with a 5 year old...what's the point. Just a power check, I believe Simon is more your speed Emmanuel. Thanks for playing!

and the last comment.. About sticking with it till you have 80 people due to FOMO... Thats not success.. Having people turn up because they see value and are able to apply it to the broader world.. that's success.. ps I realize that statement was probs just a wise crack.. so not taking it too seriously..
