You know, it's amazing how deep the game's world runs. Unbelievable for its era. It's not like in, say Doom, where you see can see an area beyond a wall or something but you can't get to it, it's just an image. In Daggerfall, you can go virtually as far as you can see.
mr_ghosty well, certainly when compared to something like skyrim when they usually die in a few hits. low level rogues and wizards would struggle with these skeletons, heck an imp can oneshot you in daggerfall if your build isn't viable
Hard to believe this series turned out to be from simple gameplay to infinate possibilites with amazing graphics.. The creators of the Elder Scrolls knew what they were doing when they made these games.
This game has the scarest monster screams I have heard on a while. The skeleton is so creepy and loud, I dont think I cant play past the first dungeon xD
2:44 I remember that god damn bear... bastard was waiting right in ambush for me. I opened that door, heard a roar, looked around, OH GOD A BEAR! And then I was dead.
@ClassicRockMan31294 The Run skill governs your speed. Hold the run key (default shift i think) and as you run, it will work on your skill. Running does drain your fatigue, which lasts a long time, but if it gets too low you NEED to rest to be able to continue without danger of dropping to the ground in exhaustion. You can also Increase stamina by sleeping at inns, and eating food and drinking at them.
RetroGamer611 Well that's quite the conclusion to jump to (Your comment got removed as spam, by the way) and I feel that you're being unfair. I was making a joke, not insulting the game. I enjoy games with older graphics for it makes me nostalgic. I have no problem with older games as long as they're entertaining. Sure, good graphics is nice, but I've come to appreciate all games regardless of graphical quality. I'm sorry you misunderstood my comment and took it the wrong way.
This game was my Epic game of all time, i played it for hours, for days, for months and for years. the sheer size of it was huge, mind you there were bugs a plenty - but with the fan made patches, the game was playable. The dungeons were what a true dungeon crawler would look for, you could actually get lost in them (in part due to the dodgey 3d map system ahha)
I know this word is overused, but the only word I can use to describe this game is "underrated". Yeah, it was buggy, but I feel many of the arguments the people who hate Daggerfall use are invalid. I once read this one guys comment, explaining how Daggerfall was "shit". He thought that his opinion mattered, and said something along these lines: "even if you like this it, you have to agree, it is shit". He said it as if the game really was horrible.
@Zambaku Not everything is, but some things are. For example, all the "random" quests are generated based on various templates, where names of people and places are replaced by generated ones. I'm not sure if any of the dungeons used in those quests are actually random, or just procedurally generated, but non-random. The main-storyline quests and dungeons are static however, including Privateer's Hold, except that the monsters may vary depending on your level.
This is actually really cool! While Skyrim is a great example of the future of RP gaming, it's fun and good to look back at the roots of games like these.
@adriwood32 It's on DOS, it's free on the Elder Scrolls website or you can search for "Daggerfall Setup" which installs it without you needing an emulator
@hey111222 The save crashing happens to me, too. It sounds like you tried to go to Daggerfall after you had been poisoned. It does continuous damage even when you travel.
You can trap the imp at the beginning by having it chase you back to the stairs and it will get stuck there. Then you just quickly run past it which you will be able to get to the treasure inside the room.
OMG such a HUGE jump between this and elder scrolls 3 Morrowind OH MY haha. Morrowind in my opinion is still the best single player rpg ever made. from the vast landscapes and creative world design, to the midnight skies with the moons and planets and stars, the atmosphere, the HUGE customization of weapons and armor and how you have to level up EACH single thing you decide to do. Its sort of like a simulator but not too overboard with simulation. The perfect blend of what gamers crave in an rpg
It's crazy that people are hesitant to play the classics simply because of aged graphics... to me, that's what gives it that original classic vibe. Sometimes, it's fun to go oldskool. People shouldn't always worry about how good a game looks. More along the lines of whether it's fun or not.
He also can't use steel items and maybe a few more disadvantages, which means he had a lot of points to spend on "hit harder and more often" abilities.
this really reminds me of star wars dark forces for the ps1 , when only the game world was 3D, weapons, enemies and items etc were restricted to 2D :3 good times, good times..
Also. Morrowind MIGHT count, if there were two w's. Summerset is another one. Hammerfell is one. Winterhold, Dawnstar, Windhelm, Mournhold, Sunhold, Greenheart, Dragonstar, and Stormhold. It seems that Cyrodiil is the only province that doesn't have the cities or it's name being named two words.
I played all four daggerfall Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim but actually this is the most fun because you are already at the end of the map after two hours
The first time I played Daggerfall was just like the first time I played the first Fallout game, I kept getting killed by rats. XD
the transition from this to morrowind is just incredible

"GIANT BAT JUST DIED"

Sound effects and music are creepy af ..nothing like modern elder scrolls
yep I wouldn't want to play alone
***** Me me :o
Thank you for not doing voice commentary, some TH-camrs are very distracting
It's a Walkthrough, not a Let's play. Some people commentate to Walkthroughs but most of them do not.
Meow - Agreed. It's actually very annoying when people try to commentate but some of us just wanted to watch the damn gameplay. -_-
I actually was looking for one so they could explain some mechanics.
I hate it when people call their let's plays "walkthroughs" . A blind let's play is very different from a guide to complete the game.
@@rocketman6100 lululul welcome to the future most of em fucking do now and won't shut the fuck up
I've never really played this game before, but I must say compared to skyrim and oblivion skeletons used to be pretty fucking creepy back then o_o
Butter of Sorrow and far more dangerous.
mr_ghosty well, certainly when compared to something like skyrim when they usually die in a few hits. low level rogues and wizards would struggle with these skeletons, heck an imp can oneshot you in daggerfall if your build isn't viable
mr_ghosty no problem :D
Man, this takes me back. Daggerfall really had some wonderful music.
size of the map is 161,600 square kilometers = 50MB AVAILABLE SPACE REQUIRED
WHY?????????
Bakittas Sanitas compromise on graphics and keep the code behind gameplay simple and you have a lot more stuff left over for the map
procedural generation and literally nothingness for tens of thousands of miles
First time I played daggerfall, I couldn't grasp how to attack and got killed by the first rat in the game.
Forget Marunes Dagon, forget Alduin, even forget Nazeem. These rats are the true world destroyers.
WTF was a bear doing in a dungeon?
***** dirndl?
FailedTrojan yk tcjt's, right?
HokoAoi zu u los tret?
Yeah that's a bit weird.
1 word. Helgen. yup
Wow, I didn't know daggerfall was this advanced. ... adding yet another game to my list of games to play
Hard to believe this series turned out to be from simple gameplay to infinate possibilites with amazing graphics.. The creators of the Elder Scrolls knew what they were doing when they made these games.
Game still has more features than modern TES games. A true masterpiece.
my pc can't handle these graphics.
I would love to see Bethesda release this and the first Elder Scrolls game as a collection on consoles.
that lever action looked better than Skyrim lever action.
This game has the scarest monster screams I have heard on a while. The skeleton is so creepy and loud, I dont think I cant play past the first dungeon xD
2:44
I remember that god damn bear... bastard was waiting right in ambush for me.
I opened that door, heard a roar, looked around, OH GOD A BEAR! And then I was dead.
I am always astounded by how amazing the graphic are in this game
You have to move the mouse in the direction you want to swing while holding the attack button.
I remember playing this, that was like a decade ago.
Rat just died. Why is that hilarious xD

Is this a cave or a goddamn city?
Lol, this is tiny compared to some others in the game. In the northern regions i got lost in one for literally years
Oh man these sound effects are taking me back. I remember that guy behind the u-shaped table giving me so much trouble.
Next gen graphics.
Yeah same with Arena's graphics lol
That was really rude. What the hell is your problem?
RetroGamer611 Well that's quite the conclusion to jump to (Your comment got removed as spam, by the way) and I feel that you're being unfair. I was making a joke, not insulting the game. RetroGamer611 No worries. Glad we worked this out.
Devin Murphy Why would you say that?

Manhunt! 😄
its amazing how far video games have come in just 30 years. just think in another 30 years what we might do.
This game looks nice, but does it have Bethesda's usual can't run without 100 fixes done by the community?
no
I've been playing a community made file just in case located here. wiwiki.wiwiland.net/index.php?title=Arena_:_ArenaSetup_EN
I downloaded the game two days ago. It's actually really scary. I shat myself when a bear came into the room while I was trying to loot something.
I cant believe how one company makes a game like this and just scratches the whole graphics and makes Skyrim. Genius. Just Genius.
You realize they didn't just jump from Daggerfall to Skyrim right?
All you need is dosbox. It only works for recording things in dosbox when you're running it.
I've just finished removing "Let's Play" from all of the video titles in this playlist to avoid confusion.
@Zambaku Not everything is, but some things are. For example, all the "random" quests are generated based on various templates, where names of people and places are replaced by generated ones.

still holds up, 10 years later
I don't remember that music being in Daggerfall, Arena yes but not Daggerfall.
I loved this game so much when I was younger.
I love watching these... reminds me of when I use to watch my brother play late at night. =)
@TunnelUnder It's PC only.
When creating your character you can take a quiz, and there is an option that says "You bought a ebony dagger." or something like that.
@Zambaku It's made of a bunch of hand-made "blocks" that were arranged randomly at the time the game was developed, so yeah.
This is actually really cool! While Skyrim is a great example of the future of RP gaming, it's fun and good to look back at the roots of games like these.
"Rat just died"
Good dialogue!
You've been on here since 2009 damn. Why deserve more subs
I find it amazing how much the graphics changed.
I like the dungeon soundtrack in this game. Quite terrifying
I have come from the future for your content. Thank you
@MaynardOwns yes you can, go to controls and you can configure the look up and down keys.
I was never able to get over this game's graphics.
After watching for a minute i already feel sick.
Woah...watching this brings back memories. This used to scare me when I was younger!
@beatles61 Yeah, that's right. The download is 149 mb, but when you install it with the "huge" option it takes up ~500 mb.
played this alot when I was a kid. Had no idea it was this incredibly depressing
Finally, someone who knows how to start with an ebony dagger.
man games back then were so unforgiving...i kinda respect that
i just spent 2 hours running around the same throne room getting one shotted by a bear
Needs to be available on iPhone. That way you could play it anywhere. Gaming in the 90's was so cool. Imagination was still king.
@SilverHands1 It's about half a gig, actually.
That was an imp. They can kill low-level characters pretty quickly.
@BobbyTLP no thats TES I: Arena. In Daggerfall you explore Highrock and Hammerfell.
@adriwood32 It's on DOS, it's free on the Elder Scrolls website or you can search for "Daggerfall Setup" which installs it without you needing an emulator
@ForceRecon198 I know right! but there was a long time period between oblivion and skyrim so i bet we'll have to wait a while
"Oh look a dog.. WTF That's a grizzly bear?!"
You can own a pirate ship, climb walls, levitate. Small things that add up to make up a big game.
I love how when you kill something it says: "Rat just died." XD funny.
If you go to the controls in Daggerfall, you can set it so that the mouse looks around as you move it, just like in TES III, IV, or V
I just played skyrim right before I saw this. Puberty done right
I like the sound, when rat appeared :D
Nice video, man. I didn't play Daggerfall myself, starts from Morrowind. It's like a history lesson.
@Dccopus Some leftovers from text only gaming.
"Horses passed this way recently.
A bird calls nearby."
It was strangely mesmerizing just watching the gameplay.
these are the best graphics i have ever seen ever!
I'm relativley new to elder scrolls so before i get Downguard i'm respectfully going through the timeline to see the evoulution of this game.
@hey111222 The save crashing happens to me, too. It sounds like you tried to go to Daggerfall after you had been poisoned. It does continuous damage even when you travel.

this game got the world record for the largest game area. Must be randomly generated. It's like 55,000 kilometers
It's crazy that people are hesitant to play the classics simply because of aged graphics... to me, that's what gives it that original classic vibe. Sometimes, it's fun to go oldskool. People shouldn't always worry about how good a game looks. More along the lines of whether it's fun or not.
The known Dragonborn in the series are:
Tiber Septim
Martin Septim
Neverienre( Your character in Morrowind)
The Dovahkiin from Skyrim
The proper install directions, from Bethesda, are easy to follow and are part of the download of Daggerfall.
For me this is the best Elder Scroll yet,way better than Skyrim and Oblivion
keep in mind it's 16 years old. You'd have to be crazy to try to create this kind of game back then.
You would be surprised at how much depth this game has.
@Bcgtwin
This was 1996. What did you expect?
Back then, these controls were brillant.
2:42 Smallest grizzly bear ever
that skeleton falled and i thought it was killed but i was hearing screams behind me until i turn back and see it again :P
I see you took the Ebony Dagger as a starting weapon. That does help.
He also can't use steel items and maybe a few more disadvantages, which means he had a lot of points to spend on "hit harder and more often" abilities.
Lol. When I first played through that dungeon I was too afraid of the bears roaring to move on. XD
this really reminds me of star wars dark forces for the ps1 , when only the game world was 3D, weapons, enemies and items etc were restricted to 2D :3 good times, good times..
@Drag0nFire360 Nope, it's not a mod. Just press escape and go to controls and there should be an option for it there.
I think old games like this are way scarier than modern games with good graphics
So many good memories; thanks for uploading
12 year old video just popped up in my feed. Classic
Also. Morrowind MIGHT count, if there were two w's.

look how much elder scrolls has evoled
"Rat just died."
Thanks Captain Obvious.
amazing how we went from this to morrowind
"He has strong vocal cords for a skeleton" I agree. tough he DOESN'T HAVE ANY.
yeah i realize that. I meant many of the names are like that. not all of them.
