I had a baby just a month before you had Rowan. We are also on the TTC journey, I got pregnant in February and miscarried at 10 weeks. It's still very raw and understand completely how hard it is to have people speculating about pregnancy/baby number 2. I know they mean well but its hard regardless. Best of luck to you on your journey! ❤

Older mom here - I was a stay-at-home mom for the first 3 or 4 years of my child's life, my (now-ex) partner was NOT supportive, but I never lost my identity! I think the theory you put on-screen about socializing with friends is the key. 😘Love and light to you! 💜

I have a boy a couple of months younger than Rowan, and I'm currently 16 w preggo. Let me tell you, pregnancy with a toddler is NO JOKE. So as you said, try to enjoy your not pregnant energy, and do all the things you can do, because after the energy is zero percent.

I didn't know you were trying for a second child. It took 2 and a half years for our second. We had basically given up by that time, and suddenly *pregnant*! It was actually a bit of a mental adjustment after having given up.

My nephew is a similar age to Rowan (just turned 2). He came down to visit with my sister in law, and was very keen to explore upstairs. We thought he was just enjoying exploring however he went straight to our cupboard in our spare bedroom and got out a mini golf club that he played with last time he was here! It blows my mind how he remembers these little things now 😭

Ooh I took that course in the pandemic too :)
I'm a mental health practitioner with degrees in Psych and Neuroscience so i guess I count, ish? :P
A lot of it is "training" the "muscle" of focusing on positives (not just brainwashing or ignoring negatives, but the stories we tell ourselves really do make us feel better/worse), and also there is a predisposition to learning those skills as we grow up in healthy environments as well as genetic predispositions to MH difficulties which may lead to a specific 'leaning' of how we perceive things.
It's all a bit complex IRL, but the gist is, "how do you talk to yourself about what happens" - and if you can focus on something positiove to 'counter' the negatives, it tends to be helpful for our wellbeing. Thanks for coming to my TED talk xD

I have an almost 2 year old and this age is SO fun. It can be hard because of big feelings and tantrums, but man their memory and mannerisms are so great! My daughter apparently formed a core memory MONTHS ago and she’ll randomly bring it up out of nowhere all of the time. It’s crazy. I didn’t expect it either since you don’t remember things from this age.
I became a stay at home parent when my daughter was born and I agree with the little bit you popped up in text when you talked about not losing yourself as a Mom. I stopped working and “lost” that identity, BUT I have a very supportive partner and I’ve been able to take a good amount of time to do hobbies and still feel like myself. I exclusively nursed (she wouldn’t take a bottle 😭) so I actively felt more and more free to pursue things that make ME happy as she dropped feedings too.

Based purely on observation since you have had Rowan, my opinion is that your mindset going into motherhood and being mother was what really caused you to stay you.. I took note that if I ever decided to be a mother the mindset and attitude you had towards it is exactly how I would want to be, I also think that this is what makes you such a great mum and on the trajectory of always being a great mum !

It's a good reminder to enjoy the moment and what you can do while TTC. My husband and I are trying to TTC after an MC in March, and I believe (I need to test again) that I'm just finally starting to ovulate if I'm judging my current symptoms correctly. We were in limbo for so long with recovery and healing, and who knows how long it may take for us to get pregnant. I don't want to be bummed every time a test returns negative.

I have family members who insist it's harder to get pregnant while breastfeeding because your body thinks "no thanks, I've already got one to take care of" and fights it. I doubt there's any science behind that idea, but all the same glad to hear Rowan's weaned; they'd say you're ready now! Lol. Best of luck with the process and just let it happen when it happens; it's all good. :)

There actually is science behind it. Breastfeeding was considered effective contraception until the 1970s because it was rare people actually got the 4k calories and sufficient micronutrients to also ovulate at the same time (many women didn't even resume to have periods from how mallurished they were)
It's no longer seen as black and white and it's possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding in accordance with the normal health concerns

I hear that two year olds are both fun but also terrors. They're absorbing everything and it's so fun to see them interact with the world, but they are a lot more mobile and have no sense of danger. So definitely be careful of what you say and toddler proof EVERYTHING if my parents stories of me as a toddler are anything to go by.

I think being positive is a lot about who and what you surround yourself with. When you find something wrong about the world/life, try and find a solution, and if you find that it’s unchangeable, move on. Focus on just one thing you want to change at a time, don’t try save the whole world at once. And rather than constantly trying to keep up to date with all the bad things that are happening, look at some of the good stuff as well! Basically just stay focused on a particular topic, with all its goods and bads, and leave the rest of the worrying to other people who have chosen that as their topic of choice. There really is a lot to discuss and indulge in in life, so if you find that every conversation you’re having is either about random current affairs or like,, your favourite tv show, try find something else to speak to people about (and maybe new people to speak to.) Go outside and experience some things and tell a story about it. Make connections. And perhaps this one is an unfortunate one, but if you find that every time you interact with someone your mental health declines, end that friendship. It doesn’t matter if it’s not their fault, we need to look after ourselves otherwise we’ll all just drag each other down.

  • @curiousfirely

I think instead of 'when is the right time for a baby', the better question is 'do I want to have a baby'. This way, if life events come up that may impact future fertility, you aren't trying to decide IF you want to get preganant, on top of those other life events. I faced a similar type of decision as Hannah's re: surgery, but I chose the other path without a lot of stress because I knew I didn't want to get pregnant.

This may seem an odd question, but I'm wondering what it feels like to want a second child? You are obviously completely certain it's what you and Dan want. I on the other hand badly wanted my son, and I thought I would have 2 kids, but he's 1 and a half now and I currently have absolutely no desire to have another. My first daughter will turn 2 in July and I'm currently 39/40 weeks pregnant with the second one and honestly to me it was a no brainer, I just always wanted to have 2 kids but just because you might have thought that in the past doesn't mean it can't change. The feeling that your family is complete is absolutely valid and it's definitely not a decision to take lightly so it's great that you're asking yourself this question. I can attest that being pregnant while already having a baby is VERY different than being pregnant for the first time with no little ones to take care of. Not as much time for rest or in general "me time" but to me it's still totally worth it. 😊

I've just always pictured myself with 2 kids (maybe because that's the family I grew up in) and I love the idea of Rowan having a sibling!

I always thought I wanted two kids too but after my daughter was born I definitely felt zero desire for a second. My husband didn't feel strongly either way so we decided if we still didn't definitively want a second by the time she turned four we'd close the door forever. She turned four in Nov 2021 and in April 2022 I chose to have elective surgery to remove my fallopian tubes. Prior to that I was constantly circling in my head about not wanting a second but considering what it would be like and why don't I want that and should I do it anyway. It was immensely stressful. Once I was sterile those thoughts pretty much just stopped and I felt a great peace. She's six and a half now and I'm more sure than ever that our family is complete. I found it helpful to have that future point set where, due to our ages and other factors, we knew we'd either want to go ahead and try for a second or agree that we didn't ever want that. Maybe for you that's five or ten years or more in the future, maybe less.

I had the opposite feeling. I think the decision to have our first daughter was mostly led by my partner. I didn't realise how strong my desire was until she was here, probably because I struggled to visualise how life would be. The strong desire to have a second comes from two places 1) I have a sister who I am very close to and this is what I visualise for my own daughter and 2) because after my daughters birth I had a big haemorrhage and had to have emergency surgery which I had to sign a form which listed four procedures (one of which was a hysterectomy). Thankfully it didn't come to that and ever since the day she was born I have deeply desired to have another. Our journey is slightly tougher this time round as our next pregnancy ended in a miscarriage at 10 weeks. It only makes me want it more. Kinda like when someone tells you you might not be able to do something and you want to try harder to make it happen. Some helpful advice may be to envision the family dinner table 10-20 years down the line and let that guide you as to how many children you would like sitting beside you.

In the middle of the video so maybe this question is asked! But do you think you would have made your life change if you hasn't had rowan and taken maternity leave?

I‘m so happy you’re doing so well! ❤ It’s great to see you like this. Hope it’s ok to ask: Are you not a bit worried that getting pregnant again and having another child might destroy the work life balance you finally found?
I feel like you went through such an exhausting phase in your life and you finally found some calm within the storm, you weaned Rowan, you started focusing on yourself a bit again, on your creativity, your style etc. I imagine having 2 kids to be so stressful… I hope it’s ok to be so honest about what I’m thinking, it’s not critique, just really curious about your thoughts and reasons! 💕
Especially since I’m someone who always wanted kids but has been questioning that wish recently… partly also because of content I’ve seen from mothers like Melanie, who seem completely exhausted and like they have 0 time for themselves. It scares me… I want to believe there is a different way, but I’m just not sure at this point.

I wonder also. I saw that Melanie ended up getting very ill and had to be in hospital and part of that was sheer exhaustion. The pressure on working mothers particularly, but all mothers really, seems immense.
