Nothing But Thieves has some seriously good music, If I Get High is another hard hitter. Conor has an incredible voice, too. One of the best imo. He's got a lot of Jeff Buckley influence in his sound.

I’m a huge fan of this band and after listening to this song “over and over again,” I picked up on how it plays with the building and release of tension. One thing I thought was really interesting was the scream in the middle of the song that serves to release a lot of pent up frustration and then how the instruments drop out after it. The part where he sings “I left my heart in Amsterdam where I could dream and nights were long” is the most vulnerable part of the song sonically and lyrically. The song was written during the band’s tour for their first album where they kept going on really long tours and were sleeping on the road and pushing themselves to the limit. The lead singer, Conor Mason, struggled a lot with insomnia, which fed into his anxiety and depression during the time. It came to a point where they almost stopped touring and almost broke up the band because he couldn’t take it anymore. The feeling of being stuck as you mentioned spawned from this rut they were in. The lyric “I left my heart in Amsterdam” is looking back on a time and a place (Amsterdam) where the band were still feeling the adrenaline of touring and where they felt “home” in a sense, connected to each other and to their fans, and where Conor could still sleep through the night. It’s also interesting because the bridge is the fist time he sings the word “Amsterdam” even though it’s the title of the song. The first half of the song (the verses) seems to be about something completely different: a critique of society and our reliance on technology and alcohol, and an inability to have a meaningful conversation/connection with anyone because everyone puts up a front. Then the chorus expresses the narrator’s frustration with being “like them” and, like you said, going nowhere. In the bridge, the more personal meaning is brought in, along with the word “Amsterdam.” The voice crack leading into the last chorus (oh my God Conor is an incredible singer) brings in a new layer of desperation for the last chorus and the outro. It’s like the walls that were built up around the narrator during the first half of the song as he sets himself apart from others and points out everyone else’s flaws are knocked down as he introspects and finds the longing to be connected with others again, as he was in Amsterdam. The last line “I really need that feeling back” sums up this feeling of desperation.

    1. I'm surprised you're reviewing rock music
    2. Even more surprised it's one of my top favorite rock bands
NBT is completely underrated, especially the singer. Even live he can hit those notes perfectly.
Anyway I'd suggest this again hoping you'd see. Between the Buried and Me - Selkies an Endless Obsession

If you want a more experimental and instrumentally diverse song by them to explore, check out the song “Broken Machine” or “Afterlife.” Another fantastic rock song and one of my favorites by them that builds from an atmospheric first verse into a massive crescendo is “I’m Not Made By Design.”

  • @domjoe1

An amazingly diverse band. No two songs sound the same. The passion, power and sometimes heartbreak in Connor’s voice goes in and out with the music. Great band to see live too! Sorry and Wake Up Call are two of my favorites.

Nice that you got to know them! Conor has a gift when it comes to sharing feelings through his singing (Lover, Please stay comes to mind). May I recommend Unself Portrait, by Artificial Language? They've got an interesting sound, or at least I haven't heard anything like that before.
