Should I Worry About The "Wiggle Trigger" On My S&W 1854 Lever Action Or My Marlin 1895 Trapper?

  • When examining his brand new Smith & Wesson 1854 lever Action Rifle, the Doctor discovered that when cocked, the trigger freely swung back and forth...a condition he dubbed "Wiggle Trigger." This raised a couple of questions; 1) Is "Wiggle Trigger" necessarily a bad thing, and 2) Do other firearms suffer from this condition?
Please let us know in the comment section if you have a firearm that suffers from "Wiggle Trigger" and if it affects the overall use or enjoyment of the gun.

I just saw on a blog about this issue that John Browning designed triggers this way on lever actions, as a safety mechanism, to prevent accidental discharge while cycling the action. (FWIW)

It's the first lever gun I've ever owned and I'm super happy with it. Got it for 1050 so a little under retail too. Thing is a laser beam and has no recoil at all. Only thing, when I first got it I took it out the box to show my buddy at my home, put it back in the box and got it out a week later to go shoot, had surface rust spots on the reciever and some spots already starting on the barrel. Really wouldn't have thought stainless steel would have rusted while in a box a week after purchasing, so make sure you keep it oiled and kept in a good place where it won't rust.

I am glad you're enjoying your 1854. I am very happy with mine as well. I have not noticed any rust, and I agree that you should expect a stainless steel gun to be more rust resistant. I will check mine carefully. Thank you for the heads up.

@DrTac I do live at the coast so some more salt in the air for me than others but yeah definitely keep it oiled when it's stored

@DrTac also think it's just a ss coating not ss thru and thru

I’ve got to be honest. If made my mind up you really show my tail to you about the video until I read your comments. So at this point I owe you an apology.
I’ve been shooting lever actions for 45 years and have more than I’ll ever need. The S&W 1854 goes everywhere with me. The 44 mag is my favorite caliber so this rifle didn’t have to try hard to be my favorite rifle for basically an everyday carry. I’m retired and live in a very rural area.
The “wiggle trigger” as you put it is no concern at all. I don’t worry about the forward travel. It’s the rear travel that matters. I think if you spend more time with this rifle you will grow to appreciate much.

The Marlins have had a similar trigger for years… the S&W is a close clone.

all my levers have wiggle trigger. 2 Winchester 1894 and 1 marlin 1895

That does make me feel better about it. Is it something you had previously noticed?

@@DrTac yes i noticed it previously and when i researched it found to to be normal for those models. i didn’t know it was on the smith and wesson model though

Thanks for the feedback. I actually never noticed it on my Marlin 1895 Trapper (in 45-70), until it got my attention with the S&W 1854…and I only noticed it because of how egregious it was. That said, it works fine and I really don’t see a problem with it. Thank you again for taking the time to comment.

    I think it's because of the Lever.🤔

    • @DrTac
      @DrTac  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

...but why does the trigger not wiggle on other lever actions?

Na my man, no disrespect, im trying to remember the video, he was an expert on lever action rifles, he said, the trigger has to wiggle on some lever actions, its the kind of lever it is, so it was no disrespect, i was literally saying, I think its the kind of lever.🙏✌️👌🇺🇲💪@@DrTac
