5:37 how do you get both the toy and baby in focus instead of having one or the other? A camera phone for example would focus on both of them. Why does a proper camera only focus on one object?
Thanks for the video! Very helpful! I know you didn’t actually touch on focus guides but I appreciate that you mentioned it as a bonus. I didn’t even know that existed.
Great video. Thanks! I just purchased the Canon R6 and this video really helped me understand better the Af features. I have one question. When I look through the viewfinder I have an orange circle show up. I drag it to the subject and then the box/brackets show up. I dragged it to the next object and it changed the focus. Is this an update in the firmware? I have 1.7.0
Hey Tony, great stuff in the video. I shoot videos on gimbal of jewellery on people so I was suffering sometimes with focus jumping around especially when I zoom in on the hands or chest for example. I think switching off Servo AF might be the key. Any other recommendations you might have for this specific type of shots? thanks and keep up the great content
I often need to film myself. How do I set it up so I'm in focus? Let's say I'm filming myself walking in the door with a load of firewood? I need to set up the camera on a tripod. Leave the room. Then walk back in and walk toward the camera.
This is great! Just set up your shot, focus on the door and then hit the af lock button in the bottom left of the screen. The focus won’t follow you but you’ll be in focus when you walk in the door. The other option is to use face tracking and hope for the best ha!
That’s a good question! I typically focus on the person in between the person closest and farthest away. And depending on how far away they are, I’ll raise my Aperture (sometimes up to like 6 or 7) to make sure everyone is in focus.
This is also my question. Can you move focus from Paisley to Mr Potato by using joystick in AF eye/face tracking? Say I was photographing a small family, how do I select the particular face I want in focus while in servo? Do I have to go back to toggling focus in one shot? I think the camera auto focuses on the closest face. How can I jump from toddler to mom and then dad?
@@susananderson8738 I use the touch and drag feature. You have to turn it on if i am thinking correctly, but then i just use my thumb to move the focusing point around to the face I want. I use this feature ALL of the time!
I use two things: First, I use a ronin tripod as the base. Ty for video, btw af on does the same thing with half shutter? So any good for photography? I would change it customized into something else actually like changing focus mode
I feel I have more control than using the half shutter. That may be from back in the dslr days when I used back button focusing though. Cool how everyone sets up their cameras slightly different!
Tony! Thank you... You answered a few of my questions! If you were filming interior real estate, would you disable eye tracking and set to "no priority" vs people or animals? wwyd?
Glad I could help. I typically just leave the eye tracking on to people. If there’s no people then it just tracks normally. Experiment and see what works for you though!
Great video Tony, hey what kind of sd card are you using for 4k 60fps video? i bought a Sandisk 170MB/s uhs i card but it seems choppy for the recording.
@@TonyMellinger yes it is, I searched on the net after your comment the other day and I think it's my mac doing some nasty shit, I used proxies and got some good results, thanks a lot mate.

My tracker transforms into many small boxes, which remind me of AUTO mode in old DSLR days. Annoying and not helpful. Also in the way when trying to focus on a detail. To that end, I keep using single focus points.

You have two options. Move the subjects closer together or raise the aperture of the camera. It can have everything in focus.
Always welcome to see these sort of videos so thanks!

Yea the focus guides are great!
Also at 8:40, do you have to always press down on the focus button for moving subject? Or do you press it once, then servo does the rest?
In servo it should track automatically

Thanks for this helpful tutorial, is there an follow-up available for focusing for video "in the field" in different situations?
This is basically the way I do all of my auto focus. Do you have a specific situation you’re thinking of?
Great video. Which table tripod are you using? I’m looking for one that can hold the weight of camera and lens.
