- Melbourne snapper season is well known for people getting to close to each other when the fish are on. I personally am happy to put up with it for a few weeks of the year only. What about you? Got any stories? Positive or negative? Some may curse it, some may think it is social connection. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
Such an interesting perspective Michael. Great video, but really dislike the double standards I must say.
I was the first one on that school of snapper, before you and your mate also came over. I wasnt fussed at all, instead happily kept fishing and didn't say anything!
So you could see my surprise when my mate showed me this. When you and your mate joined, you guys went into my casting area and you could say "crowded the area."
But Iwasnt fussed at all! I was just happy when other fellow kayak fishos get onto fish too.
Each to there own, but for me, I'm happy when others share the joy of getting snapper, and we were all laughing and having a good time.
I can understand if boats were going into it, as it's plain dangerous,.but c'mon mate, don't complain about something you do yourself 😅
No complaints at all from my end. Had a ball! Thanks for the comment.
Hey, I was here first!
Haha, yeah someone has to find the fish to start with!
Boats like that is why I avoid Lake Nagambie like the plague. The river is much more relaxing.
Yeah 100% great to get away from the hoards
What an absolute circus! All those boats must be having a massive impact on the fish stocks. You need a few heavy sinker to hurl at them boats that get a little too close!
Yeah- ideas.... I am happy to join the circus for a few trips every year... Then back to the backwaters.... away from this stuff for the rest of the year
@ yes, fair enough too. It’s all about having different experiences. As long as no one runs you over!
Absolute madness... seagulls to a chip!
Rawlo, yeah bit like that, but on this occasion there were many chips available.
You always know it's Snapper season in Melbourne when you are close enough to another vessel to smell their farts 😂 I've had it a few times now where I've hooked into a good fish and a boat will anchor up less than 15 metres away from me while I'm fighting the fish.
Where I've been fishing lately it's been packed with kayaks as well as a few boats. I largely don't mind as long as we're all basically doing the same thing; going up wind of where the fish are holding, drifting through the area and then peeling back around to the start of the drift. You can kind of do it in a formation and in a rotation where everyone can have a shot at the fish. What I get frustrated by is when we're all doing this already and someone comes along and anchors right in the middle of us, this happened recently and I tried to be nice and tell the guy to do what we are doing as it is producing fish and him anchoring over our drift line is a pain - he yelled at me and told me to f off. I slightly changed my drift line and kept catching; he got nothing but banjos, cracked the shits and left 😂
Jordy, yeah a good point you make about people taking their turn in a group, fishing the same patch. It must be said, it's nice to cast into an open area. It's a shame that a-hole parked his boat right in the middle of everyone on the drift. The Banjos were welcome Karma!
You could walk across the bay😅
haha, yeah just about
Try fishing Portarlington pier on a weekend. Shoulder to shoulder and no chance of a spot as people are taking shifts for the proven spots.
Sounds like it is an up close and personal thing.
It's a com on thing these days courtesy has completely disappeared once upon a time if you went past another fisherman you'd slow right down I do t know if you play golf but the same thing happens there it used to be a golden rule to allow people on the green to putt out before playing up these days you have to watch for incoming missiles
Good points you make. Perhaps it is a reflection of a wider society issue.
No problem as long there not in my Berlie trail?
Yep, being directly behind someone in their casting zone is a no go
Im pretty sure that boat drove through my lines the other day 🤣 we had a charter boat drop anchor behind our boat 3 times. I thought surely his taking the piss. No respect out there.
Yes, perhaps it is good that the red hot snapper bite lasts only so long...
This happens because people cant keep their mouth shut when they start catching fish in one area, if everyone keeps it to themselves until the fish move on then post, this wont happen as much
To some degree I disagree in this instance. This area in the video is one of the most visited fishing area of any in Vic during the November period. People on the move see people hooked up and decide to join the party.
Hahaha like a bunch of covid heads fighting over toilet paper
Interesting comparison
@Michael_Lane_Fishing ok maybe a bit too much. Like a bunch of seagulls over a bag of chips
Hard for kayaks to travel like a boat, so don’t mind kayakers fishing next to each other! One big family anyway!
100%. Yeah yakkers work well together I have found. As you say, the waters they fish are often close to shore.
hey michael, I was just wondering what lure you were using, thanks
Peezy, that's a Gulp Nuclear Chicken, 4 inch.
THAY ARE WATCHING YOU LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU Darren from Coffs harbor
If that boat is watching me, it is a deliberate act... even worse to get within 10m of a 2.5m kayak in a boat travelling at reasonable speed like that.
Why I don't fish Ricketts
Each to their own , I limit myself to only fishing it in November
That is ridiculous with all the kayaks so close. 1 or 2 nearby is ok but dozen or more plus boats no thanks
Yep, I agree. Happy to do this for 2 weeks of the year only.
Guy in the boat is a total flog, seen ugly scenes in the past when they do it to the wrong person. They don’t hand out common sense with boat licenses.
Bit of bay-rage on the water!
Kayakers are like the cyclists of the of the ocean.
Then give me a helmet and don me in lycra.
Nope, that would be jet skiers!
