On Sunday 16 July, Saab’s test pilot André Brännström won the Paul Bowen Trophy for the Best Solo Jet Demonstration at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in England. André was flying the new improved Gripen E. In 2022, Captain David Szentendrei from the Hungarian Air Force won the same award flying a Gripen C.
Probably another case of bribery in the fighter jet and arms dealing industry I'm afraid... It makes sense for companies to pay the judges for honors like these so they can use it in marketing. Bribery is rampant in this field: so much money at stake and so many barriers from the public eye to help them keep things secret.
😝 That was Amazing! 25+ years ago I spent so many hours flying with the Son of a Swedish Fighter Pilot. We were flying USAF C-130s back then, PLD was a Fantastic Instructor!
The front winglets where made to make the plane more agile. But they also destabilized it. The computer is adding stabilization through micro-intrusions. Hope you watched the “Fuck, Fuck, Fuck” clip. We lost a couple during testing.
Superb camera work that really shows the hard work by the canards when flying at low speed. This aircraft also has the IRIS-T bulge on the hood in front of the canopy, interesting.
@@pistonburner6448 I think it got something to do with the rapid shifting between positive and negate G's. Some air could make it into the fuel lines while shaking about like that. I could imagine there is a system that dumps fuel with bubbles. Just my guess.

Are you really Soaringtractor in disguise, or why the unmitigated hatred against one aircraft? Just for your information, that is unburned fuel dripping out of a fuel system vent because of the negative-G maneuver. It is perfectly normal, it is designed that way. The fuel then gets ignited by the afterburner and creates a funny but completely benign visual effect. Compare with the F-111 “dump and burn” stunt used frequently at airshows.
@@pistonburner6448 : What incomplete combustion? Probably fuel dumps from cooling with fueldraulics. Inverted and negative tends to do a better show of lighting up the fuel dump. There have been plenty of Gripen shows where the Gripen lights the fuel on fire. Either it's automated or pilot initiated. Could be a way, as I said, to get rid of excess heat when cooling with fuel or using fuel as hydraulics.
Other than maneuravilty performance the plane was so impressive and looks lovely in the sky very beautiful in every angle. Looking forward for the philippine to acgquire an squadron of this jets
Wasn't André interviewed by the former US fighter pilot "Mover" on his TH-cam channel? Really interesting to hear André explain about the work as a pilot performing shows like this.
With a little help from British engines, German speaking Aero engineers (klopf), and US electronics. J-35 Draken had the best RR engine there was and it's stellar aerodynamics had a lot to thanks a bunch of, post 1945, imported german engineers. The J-37 Viggen had it's cutting edge computer and electronics from US from the nuke scrapping deal Sweden covertly did with US. Sweden was the 4th country in the world to develop the nuclear bomb but at the time didn't have the systems to deliver a strategic nuclear strike, not until J-37 was operational which ironically coincided with the US-Swedish covert nuke agreement.
There’s no better bang-for-the-buck fighter jet in the world right now. As soon as Sweden becomes a member of NATO, Gripen export contracts should dramatically increase.
@@anglonig1depends of the use case. For a country like ukraine or for Sweden under attack by Russia Gripen E is a far better plane than F35. It can be maintained and turnaround by a few conscripts on a back country road. While the F35 needs peace time like logistics

There is alot going on behind the scenes, according to SAAB they are using systems that no Air Force is using currently or even have figured out, SAAB engineers has always been one of the best and now we are working with Embraer aswell.
@@blidderbla He is probably referring to the all new electronic warfare system, in terms of sensors, jamming and radar fusion as its all new and represent the latest tech available developed specifically for Gripen E, just look at those huge wing tip pylons... they are probably housing lots of interesting equipment related to these systems. Also the the air intake/outlet at the base of the fin indicates that there is something going on there that was not present in the A/B/C/D variants
The United States should purchase 500 of these Gripen E’s, and use them for Navy/ Air National Guard..! The F-35 is too expensive to buy and maintain!!

There he goes from -1 to +7 IIRC. There's also a "X reacts to..." on that by a (former?) US fighter pilot that is especially impressed by it.
The new gripen E is i would say "the best" fighterjet ever. It have it all. It takes more load, it have a bigger stronger motor, it is bigger but more smoother, can land on carriers and can still be operates fast and silent on a road

Beautiful program. Finally Swedish pilots putting the foot down flying the aircraft with more advanced high speed manoeuvring. Hungarian and Czech pilots have been flying these jets much harder at air shows for years. Except for Zigermeet -19. That Swedish pilot was excellent.
E is a bit of a porker. I don't expect it to fly quite as nice as the C models. Most people won't be able to tell and the thrust advantage compensates a fair bit, but yeah. With regard to air show acrobatics (not actual combat performance), I expect the C-model to very much still hold it's own.
One thing that always bugs me is whenever English speakers are talking about this plane they also say "gripen" instead of calling it Griffin which is the actual English name for a Grip(Mythological creature which is also the logo for Saab). Anyways cool that People enjoy to look at this technological marvel from the Kingdom of Sweden.
The technology in the Gripen E is amazing. The communications between the E systems and the ability of interfering other radar systems will get you to this point. Before you even are able to notice the Gripen E, you are shot down! New technology, Swedish technology. Guess how it comes that our submarines (Gotland) sank the greatest submarine in the USA (drill), without even being noticed... ;)
I just got one word for that - wow! Also to the informed sports fans here - note the performance in mil power. Not meaning to bring up some old wounds but after watching this the Canadian and Finnish tax payers need to be asking some pretty pointed questions about what transpired during their respective fighter competitions.

it's not a bad plane...a single engine is a problem for a military plane, and its overall lack of performance, and it's still expensive for what it is....I much prefer the French Rafale which is a real sky killer.

Yeah and perhaps the most striking to me with the E are the huge electronic warfare antennas on the wingtips.
Small correction. IRIS-T is a missile. I believe the bulge is IRST tech.

Nice to see model E in an airshow! To my eyes it seems to have similar performance as the C model, but we know the thrust to weight ratio is higher.

The thrust to weight and G preformance is not that diffrent, but other preformance factors like range is significantly better

The software limits it to 9G, but they say the aircraft can actually do a lot more. (The pilots can not).
