  • Lately, there seems to have been a rash of airplanes landing on highways. What's going on? In this AVweb video, Paul Bertorelli explains how to land an airplane on a highway in an emergency. Just try not to do it after running out of gas.

      He is. Over here that sense of humour and dry sarcasm is normal from everyone everyday. It usually confuses foreigners because its an extra dimension on top of language that you have to master and you have to try not to take offence to terms that are everyday but not literal.

    I was in the Cessna 172 in Alabama that landed on i20.that you have here in your video , I think you've shown it three times !!! it went well all things considered !no damage to plane or person ! to clear things up I did not land to pee !!! lol. it was an engine failure on base final to talladega !!! it was actually my first logged hour towards my license !! I've flown a lot and have a hi max and a piper project ,I am still going to pursue this !!! I had drank some coffee and also a bottle of water !! you can see the video by seaching Christmas miracle or plane lands on I 20. when the plane stopped I had to pee so I did !!!

      jody Haynie You walked away without a scratch that’s all that matters. You know what they say. They like to die when you pull back the power. So keep that pattern nice and close so if you need to you can just cut across and still find runway or flat outfield. Why did it quit anyways, carb ice?

      Alex Hendel Oh contrair old boy. Altitude has nothing to do with it. It’s all about humidity temp and dew point. Those Cessnas with carbs are cold running beasts and infamous for carb ice up to around 60F I’m told. The reason I asked was it usually involves very low power settings like slowing down to land. That’s why you ALWAYS want to use the carb heat when landing lest ye forget at that very inopportune time.

      D Madej It’s true I was in the plane on interstate 20 in Alabama. Just google Christmas miracle or plane lands on I 20 and you will see me getting out of the left side of the plane walking around the back of it and then urinating on the highway

    I had an interesting PPL instructor back in 1970. As part of power loss training he’d pull power at seemingly random moments, nothing unusual about that.
    But this day we departed LGA heading west to Lincoln Park airport. Roughly halfway between Teterboro and Newark is where he simmed loss of power. Teterboro was very tempting but looked a bit too far. Newark was even further away. We were directing over the Meadowlands south of Route 3. Altitude was 2000 feet or less with no farm land or suitable parkland in sight.
    I then had a feeling of you have to be joking, right? No joke, my only option was the New Jersey Turnpike.
    While doing the requisite restart attempts, I set up an approach to the southbound lanes. He said to continue. Normally we’d go down to 50 feet or so but today he said go ahead and give it a light touch and go.
    The catch to the story is this was shortly before the western spur opened in 1970. It was a Sunday, no construction workers around, the road was newly paved and marked. Signs and other obstructions were not yet in place. It sure looked like a long clear runway to both of us.
    Frankly it was wider than Lincoln Park which was a very narrow gravel strip at the time.
    I still travel on the NJT but in the customary manner alongside annoying earthbound traffic.

      As a child, my family drove that full stretch of road end to end, several times a year for the holidays. It was constantly under construction at least as early as 1993 and they've never finished.

    I love the humor in these edu-torials. XD
    Something that every pilot should always have at the forefront of their mind is what to do in an emergency: Aviate. Navigate. Communicate. As soon as you declare an emergency, the rulebook goes flying out the window along with whatever just broke on your aircraft. Do what must be done to win the now losing battle against gravity and come out alive. Nobody ever died from all the paperwork involved dealing with the FAA, NTSB, and insurance adjusters after an incident or accident. Unless you somehow get a papercut that gets infected with a super aggressive VRSA strain, then you're boned.
    (Quick critique: the level mixing between the added sound effects and your voiceover was so out of wack it was hard to hear what you were saying at times.)

      @Calyo Delphi. You forgot to mention Extricate, and Urinate. If you have successfully avoided the Disintegrate part of things, and are then faced with the Explicate for your part in the mishap, then the rules are Fabricate, Fabricate, and Fabricate.

    Thanks for this Paul et al. I'd say it's more reporting too. All those dash cams and phones...
    When I gamed this one out years ago, I figured the best bet would be to come in with plenty of vector. Get low over traffic from behind, even while overtaking rapidly, so everyone can see you. Then it's last notch of flaps when over your best gap and you're scrubbing the last of the energy off and possibly going backwards over oblivious cars, descending into the gap. Going from faster than traffic to slower. All the while there is spare energy to do stuff, including getting away from the road if it proves too dodgy.
    I like that line about how the insurance company owns the plane from the moment the engine fails. In drills I say, "F$@% the Cessna!" at that point, to reinforce that trying to save the aircraft is wrong - only the people matter.

    Paul: My "bestest"-and-favoritest"-and-"funnest" memories of riding in the car during my childhood was the "honor" of getting to lie on my back in the back window sill of the back seat area....at NIGHT, no less..... and watched the stars. Just a great sense of humor. Keep it up!

    I witnessed a night time road landing just outside of Tampa during the summer of 2016. From where I first saw him, to where he finally stopped, he managed to avoid 4 sets of power wires crossing the road. No injuries or damage to property. The plane was towed to a bowling alley where it sat for 2 to 3 days if I remember right. It was almost comical to see it anchored down on the side of the road during my commute.

    Since you posted your video... I had two friends involved in aircraft accidents.... one died last Saturday from overshooting his base to final and spun it into the ground over Whidby Island Washington... the second happened last Sunday. Engine failure on early downwind and took several large trees in a church property over the Jefferson County over the north end of the peninsula within WashingtonState. . Hitting several large trees and ripping the right wing off and totally destroying the aircraft... only a punctured left hand. He counts his blessings since he still is 87 years old... go figure...?? Proof... count your blessings when you can...

    I landed on a highway back in the '70s. Route 495 in Merrimack NH. At night! Glided in to a "downwind", observed the headlights blinking out as they passed under overpasses. Did a "base leg" by one overpass, hoping to get down before the next. Flared out over the top of an 18 wheeler tractor trailer truck, and "stall flared" it right in front of the driver. He applied the brakes. Almost rolled to a stop before the right wing struck a vehicle in the right lane. After impact, still had the momentum to roll into the breakdown lane and came to a stop. Minor damage to the right wing and left undercarriage (that folded under the side load). Everyone walked away whole. Whew!

    Great video, I agree with the others about the humor.
    On the history of road landings, a flight instructor told me of one of his students who made one in the 1950's. His engine quit and he looked at the ground and saw....the New Jersey Turnpike! Why he thought that was better than the then-rural environment it was going through I don't know. Anyway he lined up on the lanes going in his direction, flew over an overpass, then settled more or less gracefully onto the smooth, wide pavement. Then he saw a sign...."SERVICE AREA KEEP RIGHT". So he steered onto the off-ramp and his momentum carried him into the parking lot. He shut down the master switch (still on from sending the distress call) and went into the restaurant. Well, those of us who've travelled the Turnpike in the old days know they had restaurants in the service areas (Howard Johnson's in my time) and they even served liquor. So he ordered himself a tall one and drank most of it by the time the FAA came to debrief him and, you guessed it, they cited him for flying under the influence. He explained that he was stone cold sober till he walked into the restaurant and eventually the FAA agreed and he was exonerated. A happy ending!

    Great video. I have only seen one airplane land on the interstate and that was south of Atlanta GA. When I go back to flying it will be a gyrocopter this time. Landings are much softer when the engine fails and the landing area is much, much shorter.

    During my check ride, the DPE asked me out of the blue if I was going to land on a roadway, would I land with or against traffic. I thought he was joking. I couldn't imagine anyone who has driven more than 5 minutes on US roads would trust their life to other drivers paying attention to the road in front of them - much less the sky.

      Wind direction has to be a VERY minor consideration. Landing with traffic is THE major consideration for highway landings... That may eliminate 2 lane roads with traffic moving in opposite directions. Other than that wires/over passes, the volume of traffic (in the lanes you plan to use) tunnels, etc. may foreclose the option for a road landing.

    HAHAHA! I'm from a different generation, but also stood up in the front bench seat of a new '76 Torino. Used to sleep in the rear deck of that thing too on long road trips. Like sleeping in a greenhouse. :)
    Great video. Up here in MA, there are wires EVERYWHERE, so a major highway would be your best bet in an emergency. Don't count on anyone seeing you, though, even if you land right in front of them ... 😁 Great video, as they ALL are on this channel. 👍👍

      I'm 35 now, I was seven when my parents decided I needed siblings. My parents mostly let me bounce around the car as I liked as long as I didn't bug them while driving. However the younger kids had to buckle up. This lead to these crazy incidents where my sister would take her seat belt off, dad would slam on the brakes and we would both go flying. My dad would yell at my sister for not wearing her belt and ask me if I was okay. I didn't realize how funny it was until a few years ago.
      Hell there were three trips to central Utah from Portland OR where I rode in the back of a pickup with a canopy or in a lawn chair in the very back of the van.

    That pic of the yellow piper arrow in the beginning is from when they had engine trouble on take off at my old flight school in Ogden, ut.
    The pilot did a great job of landing on I-15, and only just clipping a car with the landing gear on the way down.
    Luckily the highway is basically straight off of runway 17.
    And sometime after that, I just saw that the plane had mechanical issues again, crashing into a billboard while trying to land on I-15, and leading to injuries and the plane being totaled.
    Fortunately I only ever flew in it twice before I moved away.

    Paul these videos and this one especially (I am 57 going on 13 when it comes to silly graphics and this vid was made for me, it seems) are just terrific and I've just subscribed. I also just realized we met once back in 1992 give or take a year, during a fly-in to the Bahamas. Our group rented boats. The organizer was an Air Force pilot whose name escapes me at the moment. There was a couple in a C-172, and I was the guy with the Aerostar. I didn't have a long flight ...I lived in Ft. Lauderdale lol. Enough of story time--it's nice to reconnect once again through aviation.

    Just blend in with the crowd. I did that after my instructor and I landed a float plane on the hood of a car. After we stepped out, my instructor left to call the owner. I was left holding the bag as cops, rescue crews, etc, surrounded the crash sight, so I just blended into the crowd until he returned.

    Having landed on a highway AT night because my O-470 seized I appreciate Paul's comments. FWIW, his scpeel about landing on the median when it's invisible in darkness is, IMHO, very bad advice unless traffic is literally bumper to bumper and there are NO better options. Yes, it might be better than (crash) landing in the totally black landscape somewhere, or into lotsa lighted (and unlighted) structures (homes, multi story buildings, commercial buildings, gas stations... but...). I like to look at satillite images AND topog maps for routes I might fly at night (or in IMC). When I made my black hole night landing I knew surval would be 'iffy' in the median or in the black because of cliffs, ravines, etc. With respect to piston engines in SE PE FW aircraft it's absolutely true that "two is one, but ONE becomes NONE" (for our solo mio engines) at the least convenient times!
    FWIW, best glide for SE aircraft is only a bit faster than highway speeds. Do your own calculations: Multiply mph x 1.15 to convert to knots and see for yourself what your plane will do. Just be sure to convert your indicated airspeed to true airspeed. TAS for both Vs and Vso are generally well below highway speeds with a stock wing. And maybe those critical 'V' speeds with STOL could even close to the 35 mph speed limit on city streets. You can also use your GPS in calm conditions and figure out just what those 'V' speeds really are. Indicated airspeed is notoriously off at the low end of the IAS dial... true with both glass and stean gauge cockpits. Land WITH traffic and (as Paul suggests) slip to make small instant corrections in airspeed/ground speed. In my night highway landing I delayed dropping flaps 'til it was too late to deploy 'en (it would've added unwanted complexity to my first night precision landing in traffic as I shoe horned my C182 between a semi & an SUV). If flying a retrac don't wait TOO long before dropping the gear (if you decide on a wheel landing). Do you know EXACTLY how many SECONDS are required from the moment you move your cocpit gear toggle to "down" to 'down & LOCKED' wheels? I know the former owner of a very nice C210 who misjudged the cycle time by 5 sec or less. No one was injured [good] when his left main gear collapsed and spun the plane into the tree filled median. However, had the RIGHT gear collapsed he would have spun into traffic coming from behind. Like my habit of watching for and tracking potential off airport landing areas, I watch roads & highways for those 'I NEED IT NOW' moments. Another "FWIW": While aircraft piston engines are relatively reliable (and turbine engines are 'very' reliable) ALL engines may fail. Not all fuel issues are because the tank was empty. Lots of fuel starvation events happen every year. Carb ice causes loss of power many times each year. So does intake icing for injected engines. Even electrical failures can kill engines. The club of pilots who have experience loss of power is surprisingly large.

OMG.. that's exactly right! :o On the topic, I believe Alaska has "share the road" laws for AC, as AC use the roads allot there, including fuel stops. I believe I seen something about it in a bush flying training vid for Alaska some years ago anyway.

    Although humorously alluded to in the video, I'd like to state it directly: The vast majority of drivers have exactly zero experience handling a car at its performance limits. Expect people to freeze up or skid out. Ever see skid marks that curve off to the side of the highway? Those are usually because someone tried to brake and swerve at the same time, increasing their braking distance and decreasing their turn rate. Low closing speed is important.
    Oh, and clear the road as fast as safely possible. That goes for car breakdowns/collisions too. Just because your vehicle can be clearly seen from a long ways off does not mean no one will drive straight into it.

    Our family had a succession of Hillman Imp cars when I was very young. These small UK cars had a rear engine with a parcel shelf above it but down behind the rear seat which was just big enough for me to climb into with a blanket and sleep. Toasty!
