@@sielsianguy Standard UK house spiders and cellar spiders mostly, but occasionally the odd Cardinal Spider. Saw a massive one back in September, 12cm leg span, in perfrect condition. Such an awesome specimen. Took it back to the riverbank up the street so it didn't end up wandering back into my bathroom.
At my old place I'd find woodlouse spiders outside near the shed, and the odd wolf spider inside the shed.

I had a cob web spider beside my kitchen sink one time and she was the best pest patrol ever. I hate spraying poison around the kitchen area. She kept my kitchen free from stink bugs, that for whatever reason decided to start invading there. I told anyone that came over to not mess with her or her web. She became like a pet to me and my wife and we didn’t even like spiders at the time. We would even feed her little bugs we’d find roaming around. She sure changed our view about them. Now if we ever see one we leave them be, and let them have their little slice of paradise in our home, undisturbed.

I have a symbiotic relationship with one of the spiders I found. I have a window that has a tiny gap for gnats and fruit flies to slip in, and they always chew through any seal I put in place. So I took the spider and placed it in between the screen and the glass, and she's managed to catch everything trying to come through. I even saw her with presumably a male, and she's grown tremendously since I first placed her there, leading me to believe she's expecting. Never thought I'd say, "good girl" to a spider.

I am sure that was not the only spider in my house.. sure enough I saw quite a few during that week and apparently the word got out to just about every spider.. "free room and bored!" man they earned their keep. I never saw a roach again.. I was so happy. I had a phiddipus audax living in my house for almost a year, and it developed a funny and particular pattern it would do every day - it would do a slow, methodical lap around the edges of the living room ceiling. I always called it the perimeter check. I really enjoyed watching it do its little patrol. It was also very aware of me - I was working from home at the time and had my desk in the living room, and I would see it come over and watch me sometimes. Once in awhile I would look up and find that it had dropped on a thread to hang next to me, just getting a closer look. A curious little creature. You hit the nail on the head comparing them to cats - I always think of them as little cats too.

Here in Japan, we sometimes get the massive huntsman spiders bigger than our hands wandering into our houses. But despite the jump scare factor, they usually only wander in when there are prey insects to be found inside and then leave just as suddenly once they take care of the problem. I had one sitting outside in front of my front door staring up at the door a while ago and was like, "please, you don't want to come in, there is nothing for you." i don't have cellar spiders in my area, sadly enough but I always wanted some. I do have hobo, brown recluse ,jumping spider, giant house spider, and on occasion an occasional wolf spider that got lost and wandered in by accident. I've interacted with hundreds of these spiders in my home over the decades, and they are no bother at all. I just gently coax them only my hand and carry them to my basement or laundry room to act as free pest control if it is too cold outside to let them out. Never once have I been bitten and that is because I am careful for them to see my hand as just another bit of terrain to walk on, NOT a predator or other threat. So I am very glad there are folks out there making these videos to educate people. I think half the fear is due to a total lack of understand or knowledge of them which ends up in more bites because if they were calm rather than acting like a rampaging Godzilla, the spiders wouldn't feel the need to fight for their live sin one of the only ways they have available to them. Thanks so much for all these videos!

@@ArthurKirklandsFavorite No, not really. The largest common spider I'm aware of is the "cardinal spider", and that thing caps out at a leg span of 2 inches. The most dangerous is probably the "false widow", and that's just because they can bite, not because their bite does any damage, really.
If you are worried about our wildlife here in the UK, just remember that our most dangerous wild animal in the country is the badger, and a lot of our bugs look goofy asf. Look up "candy striped spider" or "zebra jumping spider". Even the UK's version of the huntsman spider is harmless ("green huntsman spider").

one time when i was at work i saw a spider that had a very similar body shape to a black widow, except instead of being all black it had a zebra-like black and white pattern that seemingly spiraled outward from the center of its abdomen, and the edges of the lines had a slight ridge sort of look to them. even after spending countless hours watching youtube videos about all kinds of interesting spiders over the years, i've never seen anything quite like it. sadly, it scurried away and hid before i could get a picture of it. i also didn't see the bottom of it so i can't say for sure if it was a black widow or not. i tried doing some digging, and so far as i could tell it was either the most unique black widow i've ever seen or some undescribed species, because i couldn't find anything else that looked even remotely similar to it. i'd bet it was more than likely just a unique looking black widow given my location, but the ridging in the lines on its back really throws me off still. bugs me to this day that i didn't see the bottom of it or get a picture, cause that one was really cool. wish i could share it with my fellow spider nerds lol

Hey, I've had a similar encounter. When I was a teen, I found a spider that I ALSO thought of as "zebra-like", identical to what you described. It had a pretty decent size to it, not big per se, but not small either. Bigger than a quarter for sure, maybe slightly smaller than a half-dollar. It's body had a moderate roundness/ mass to it, too. It was on a web in one of my mom's flower gardens. Upsate NY (Saratoga County). I thought it was a Black Widow with zebra markings as well, and was scared to go near it, yet I was fascinated enough to keep trying to spy on it. To this day, I don't know what it was. Funny that we both thought it was a Black Widow, and thought of zebras.

I’m a biologist too. I love spiders and I keep several species in my classroom to show students that they are our friends. Currently I have a female Western black widow and a Carolina wolf. Both are hunters which makes them so much cooler than most spiders.
My widow is so intelligent that she built a web over the opening of the cage. When I feed her, the cricket gets caught in the web and she comes running over to kill it (widows don’t usually catch prey in their webs but instead use them to sleep in for protection and go out to hunt). The only web in the whole tank covers the entrance. Hilarious

I have a lot of those cellar spiders in my apartment, several of them around one window where I have some plants that generate a lot of small fruit fly like insects (not sure if they actually *are* fruit flies though) and *one* of the spiders is so unbelievably successful, that her entire net is full of those fruit flies (I'm just gonna keep calling them that). I tried to re-home one of the other cellar spiders to that place because of the abundance of food there (and the annoyance to me where she was before since she made her net around some *other* plants that I frequently pick up and put aside to open that specific window), buuuut, she, for some reason, went back to her old location and apparently isn't bothered by me destroying her net every day.
Edit: to the hobo spider: I don't know *what* you'd need to do to make one of them bite, so respect to the scientist(s) who managed to that, but the amount of hobo spiders I caught when I was a child playing out in the fields just so I can look at their pretty pattern closer, let's me know for a fact that these spiders are anything but aggressive. They try their damned hardest to get away from you.
Edit 2: I think I just confused the hobo spider with another spider that runs around in fields,.... also brown-beige but with darker brown stripes going down their abdomen,.... that's the spider I have in my memory,... 🤔

Being in Scotland, most spiders live in doors as there are no snorkels for the rain or scarves and mittens for the cold small enough
My partner and her son are terrified of spiders so I need to move quick during mating season (when they go out their way to stand on white walls to be seen) so I can catch and release before they’re battered into an 8ft smudge
We recently switched from carpet to wooden flooring and there were spiders belting across the floor every 2 days. My partner thought the flooring somehow brought spiders out from all corners of the house. She seemed less pleased when I suggested this probably happened all the time, we just never saw them on the dark carpet.
She now wants the whole house floored and some kinda spider defence system in place - which will no doubt be me and a large jar

It’s Saturday night so it’s date night with Spencer!
This is a really cool video since we all encounter spiders in our homes. I’ve always figured that spiders did good pest control in the house so I generally leave them alone unless they’ve built a web in an inconvenient place. I don’t let black widows or brown recluses stay inside, but just about any other small spider can stay. We get wolf spiders inside occasionally and they’ll get escorted out just because they’re big and don’t need to be underfoot.
Cobweb spiders seem to be the most common that we see in our house; I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a cellar spider here. Unfortunately, brown recluses are fairly common here as well, and I’ve been bitten by one that was hiding in the bedsheets. Left me with an open sore on my arm about the size of a quarter that took months to heal.
We got all new windows and doors a couple of years ago, which cut down the number of spiders we saw inside pretty dramatically. We still will see one occasionally, but we see far fewer. That might be because we see far fewer insects of all sorts, so any spider that wanders in won’t have much of a food source. We have, however, had mice in the house for the first time in the two decades we’ve lived here, and we have no idea how the mice are getting in…

Little rectification for the cellar spider : their venom is actually very weak, even against arthropods. The reason why they're able to take down big insects and even large spiders like Tegenaria sp. is thanks to their extremely long legs that they use to entangle their prey in silk while keeping a safe distance between them. It's only when the prey is entirely wrapped up in web that they inflict the bite and start eating.

I'll also try to keep any spider in my apartment at least during winter season, as I've heard from another animal youtuber, that cellar and house spiders can get freeze to death, when it's really cold outside. I have for example a cellar spider right now sitting in a corner of my bathroom ceiling, minding his (or her?) business and a small house spider in my living room.
Once it gets warmer outside, I'll set them off on my balcony, where they can crawl somewhere else, but will probably end up in my apartment again, because they will find another way in.

You didn't mention that widows usually are close to the ground or in tight spaces, with a random assortment of "roof to floor" type webs. There are also "false widows" with the same types of webs, that weave the same webs true widows do. Widow webs are actually some of the scariest in practice in my opinion. The fact that the spiders are very patient and will actually wait when something is caught, because its prey struggling actually wraps it further and causes it to "climb" up the strand of silk to the waiting spider.
I am very happy you mentioned ACTUAL brown recluses are nicknamed the violin spider. It makes it much easier for people to identify them to know about the violin patch

Imagine how many spiders watch kids turn on incognito mode at 3 am

Found a Wolf Spider in my house a while back. Caught him running across the tile, got a clear container and captured him, took a few pictures, and carefully let him out back into the grass. Very neat looking spider!

"There's probably a spider watching you right now."
Uh, yeah. Cellar spiders are welcome in my room. This little guy that hangs out in the alcove behind my monitor, that's Franklin. Up in the corner there, that's Mabel, looks like she caught something fat. In the opposite corner is Charlotte, and a little closer to the window is Gertrude, normally just Gert.
They get to hang around because we also get a lot of giant house spiders that I really cannot stand, but these little guys will absolutely catch and kill the big ones along with a bunch of other mosquitoes and stuff.

Worked for a company in appalachia. They kept a lot of their records in a storage shed off property that they rarely accessed. Think a large detached garage. The entire thing was filled with cardboard boxes and paper. The one time I went in there were thousands of spiders and many were brown recluse. A few weeks later a terminator confirmed it. They have up trying to control the shed due to its location and abundant holes/cracks. It was nightmare fuel.

As a person who lives in Antarctica, I see this as an absolute win.

Cellar, jumping, and parson spiders are fine to completely ignore. Parson spiders are too shy and fast, but cellar and jumping spiders are fine to interact with once they are used to you. But, leave cellar spiders alone in their webs, lest you get them caught in their own web. Jumping Spiders however can actually be played with, as long as you are gentle. It'll take them time to trust you, but they are curious.

All species of house spider are basically allowed in my home, they do their job and while sure I see them often wander around normally the only interactions I end up having with them is when I have to save them from the sink they've slipped into or when I've gotta move them to a different part of the house because they're getting a little too cheeky. Lol
If it's a species that I KNOW can safely live outside I'll relocate it outside, but if it's a species designed to live in houses and will die if moved outside I never put them out they're ALWAYS moved to just somewhere else in the house where I think they'll be more useful like the kitchen or sometimes the garage.

Ohh that's what my little Eloise was! A cellar spider! She was a darling, and I spoke to her everyday when I did the laundry. She was one of the few spiders I wasn't as scared of.. I'm still trying to get over my fear of spiders by learning more about them, and she really helped me with that.. I don't want to be afraid of spiders, and my Eloise helped me a lot with that :)

Interesting piece about the cellar spider and calling out the arms race story. I would have assumed the same thing. It's rare a venom develops to one specific type rather than just being effective to all types. Great video! I subscribed

I've come into close contact with Yellow Sac Spiders before but they've never actually crawled onto my hand. They've never bit me, so they don't scare me.
