    This is crazy. A visual inspection will tell you nothing. It could easily break at the TIME OF USE even when everything looked ok before your ride. It's absolutely ridiculous to rely on some bike mechanic (NOT an engineer at Shimano) to determine whether it's safe or not, considering this could cause serious injury. You can't know exactly what's going on with the materials and degradation of the construction simply by looking at it. There's no guarantee of a warning prior to catastrophic failure. It could happen at ANY time. The cranks in question were all constructed using the SAME faulty process and design, and they should all be replaced, because they ALL have a potential of breaking. This "visual inspection" BS from Shimano is just to try to reduce the number of cranks they have to replace. We shouldn't have to put our safety in the hands of a random bike mechanic earning $15/hr with no engineering degree, who is determining if a crank is safe or not by just looking at it. Get the F out of here with that sh*t.

    Let’s be honest, what’s a professional mechanic going to so apart from a visual inspection for cracks and a slight flex to see if there’s any play in the cranks??

      Well, they could do a fluorescent dye test if they really wanted to.

  • @alejandro.shot5

    The should replace them all!
    It's a matter of safety, somebody which crank has not fail yet could get injured or killed in a future
    We're not talking about a bottlecage.

    From now on I will have one sharp eye on the cranks and the other one on the road in order to keep a straight line. Thanks for the advice.

    Very bad Service from Shimano.
    Should I wait until I've crashed and check the crank before and after every ride? It can't be that.

    My crank failed. I had a fall and fractured my elbow. There is a 11 week wait for stock where I am from! Very frustrating!

    I really hope there are no issues that develop on my Dura Ace 9000 chainset as the replacement likely to be offered by Shimano will wreck the beautiful aesthetics of the entire groupset. Might have to retire mine while it’s still in one piece and use a 105 R7000 for day to day use! Massive dent to Shimano’s reputation for quality. Sound advice as always from CW though.

    Should recall that gear cable routing on your down tube, crossed over like that

    • @dand3975
      @dand3975 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Crossed shifter cables do work, that was the factory routing on a specialized bike I bought. After the cables wore out I rerouted and uncrossed the new cables. Honestly I really didn't see much of a difference other than aesthetics.

    Shimano says that all affected Ultegra Cranksets are made before july 2019. Does anyone know what they changed since then? My 2020 made ultegra FC-R8000 crankset looks just the same as the models made before july 2019. Are there reports of delaminated cranksets made after july 2019?

    Getting a warranty replacement for the Ultegra and Dura Ace 9100 cranks is ok, but you'd be pretty gutted if you had to replace the Dura Ace 9000 cranks. That silver just works on older bikes like this S-Works Allez!

      No charge for this

    • @paulgrimshaw8334
      @paulgrimshaw8334 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No charge for any of it. If the crank is faulty, it gets replaced free of charge with a brand new unit. Labour covered by Shimano too.
      There are no downsides to the consumer in this recall.

  • @tipkeri7923
    @tipkeri7923 ปีที่แล้ว

    They didn't admit the fault to me at the service. The crank is intact, but there are visible steps on the joints of the arms. They told me that according to the instructions, the Shimano crankset is ok. According to the inspection instructions on this video, my crank should be replaced. This recall is an embarrassment to Shimano. They just want to wash their name with this farce

  • @donwinston
    @donwinston ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I believe the USA situation is effectively the same as Europe and elsewhere. You don't get a new crank unless it is determined to be failing by an inspection from a qualified person. The stop ride notice doesn't mean anything.

    • @paulwickward6703
      @paulwickward6703 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most shops or "qualified persons" you take it too will probably just flag all of the cranks they see as failing inspection without bothering to look at it. It's a well known issue and no shop wants to be responsible if it does end up breaking and getting someone hurt. If you take it to one shop and they insist on actually inspecting it just try a different shop

    • @majicafilms
      @majicafilms ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulwickward6703no they won't. There is a process that has to be followed including providing photos at various stages of the inspection phase. It's also been stated that any shop that "passes" a crank which later fails can't be held liable for that. It will still go back to Shimano. Shops who just send back every chain set regardless won't get reimbursed for their time etc if they keep coming back as fine.

    • @carl90210
      @carl90210 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if the stop ride notice was mandatory, I would keep riding my R8000 cranks anyway.

      @paulwickward6703 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@majicafilms just watched the S-tec video, looks like you're right. Shimano double checks every inspected crank and just sends it back if they don't find any visual separation. That's some horseshit.

    Hindsight is always 20/20. Buying a used bike never got more dangerous. Buyer beware. A casual rider will almost never have a mishap. Racers need to be very worried. They are most vulnerable.

    • @roadglide
      @roadglide ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A “defective protect” on any level is potentially risky for any rider. If you have a Shimano group-set have it inspected. Hindsight is 20/20. Regardless. What makes a causal rider is undefined. It could be someone who group rides occasionally, on weekends only, several times a week, every day and riders who train for it and race.

    • @paulgrimshaw8334
      @paulgrimshaw8334 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      LOL. Any serious rider does an inspection of their bike before every ride. I recently found a broken spoke this way… popped another one in, tensioned and trued the wheel in an hour.

    • @sbccbc7471
      @sbccbc7471 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The failure is caused by the adhesive losing its bond.

    • @YuckFoutube-e1z
      @YuckFoutube-e1z 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sbccbc7471 That would not be a catastrophic failure...

    • @paulgrimshaw8334
      @paulgrimshaw8334 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@YuckFoutube-e1zActually it would. Just not an *immediate* catastrophic failure.
      Here’s what happens…
      The adhesive bound breaks down, allowing moisture to enter the hollow crank arm. The moisture leads to minor corrosion, which allows a stress riser to form. That stress riser leads to a crack after many cyclical loads are placed on the crank. The crank starts to creak,which is a noise that happens from the crank arm flexing. The crack grows until the crank arm fails.

    this is one reason i have used Campagnolo over the past 40 years/// the Shimano dura ace pitch 10 ax left me with a bad taste.. when they dropped the group set after only 2 or 3 years..
