  • Solomonster has a full episode review for the Dark Side of the Ring season 4 episode titled SHATTERED: The Magnum T.A. Story, one of the biggest "What Ifs" in wrestling history. He discusses Magnum's future as NWA World's Heavyweight Champion, the car accident that ended his career and the impact it likely had on the careers of some other big names, why his marriage fell apart, why certain wrestlers had to be secretly smuggled into the hospital to visit him and could he have been as big as Hulk Hogan was in WWE?

As someone who lived through this era, I can testify that Magnum TA was easily, the biggest star in Jim Crockett promotions. The second he went down, it hurt that whole territory. Vince McMahon probably would’ve won the war anyway, but it would not have been at that point.

I don't think it's mentioned in DSotR, but the police officer who helped sneak Flair into the hospital to see TA was none other than Doug Dellinger, who I always remember as the on-camera "Head of Security" during the WCW Nitro days.

As someone that saw buzz Sawyer in real time, he was definitely one of the best in ring performers ever. But, like a lot of you, we found out in recent years what a trash human being he was. And while I’m not a pet lover, buzz could’ve at least called somebody to come get the dogs if he wasn’t gonna take them with them. Kudos to Mark Calaway, a.k.a. the Undertaker for taking in those dogs. Yeah, well, Sawyer was a great wrestler, but a piece of trash human being.

I think Magnum has limited mobility, so he can walk with some aid, but not for very long, then the scooter comes in to play. I've known quite a few people who were like this, including my mom who during her battle with MS was in this condition for almost a decade before losing all the mobility in her legs. It's more common than people realize, as is how often people accuse them of faking it.

One of the things that I feel like the episode did was that they were slightly overhyping Jim Crockett Promotions. Even with Magnum as world champion, I don't see them being a serious competitor to Vince. Hulk Hogan was too big and plus you still had the Crocketts making bad choices.

@@juansanchez209 I do agree, but I will argue almost everyone slept around in those days or had affairs. Plus he was a young handsome guy, and many times...people drink their own koolaid of seeing how hot shit they are.
I do feel after his first wife left, he really knew he fucked up bad. Like controversial opinion, but I think cheating isn't as bad as fucking minors or killing people, which was way more common. Guy was a young hot guy, anyone in his shoes would probably break or do something like that. It's fucked, but look at every celebrity nowadays or Hollywood, cheating is...common.
So I rather hate Hogan over someone who, worse thing he did...he stopped after his wife left and got way better, especially when it was the 1980s.
He fucked up bad, it was wrong...but imo Hogan did worse.

My biggest beef with this episode was that they completely blamed Magnum's accident for the downfall of the NWA and as a result, Crockett had to sell to Uncle Ted. Like you said, there were other reasons that they neglected to mention, I guess for purposes of the narrative. And I really enjoyed Tom Selleck in the "Jesse Stone" made-for-tv movies (there's about 9 of those, I think they started around 2005). As big as Tom was as a television star, somehow his feature film career seemed to fizzle out rather quickly (I really like the western "Quigley Down Under" but that's mostly because Alan Rickman is the villain of the film).

He would have to adapt but he had the talent to stay in the main event card to the upper mid card. I just don't see his gimmick aging well at all, so it would have been up to him and his ability to change with the times as he got older. I think he could have pulled it off, and we missed out on many classics due to his accident.

Barry Windham(if he’s well enough) Ric, Tully or even Tony Schiavone. Any of them would been better than Mr. DDT. Tom Selleck tried to capitalize on his fame from magnum pi by making some movies in the early 90's, none of them were very good and his movie career had fizzled out by '94.
I can't remember the title but I do know one was a black comedy where he played a guy who was down on his luck and in need of money, so his aged parents decided to let him have their life insurance money.
But the catch was they had to die in an accident so the entire movie was basically a series of bits involving them trying to concoct different "accidental deaths" ranging from the mundane (both of them accidentally tripping over the dog and taking a header down a flight of stairs) to the ridiculous (him pumping gas on them in the backseat of their car so they could set themselves on fire) to the outright bizarre (something about them both slipping in the shower and accidentally hanging themselves on a loofah).
Don Amiche and Sally Field were in it.

Using a scooter doesn't necessarily mean he can't walk anymore. I live around a lot of elders and I've seen it a lot, they are technically able to walk but it's not always convenient or easy or them to do so so they have the scooter utilized as a "backup plan", so to speak.
So Magnum might have something like that going on these days, he's not immobile but he has other options if his body isn't cooperating that particular day or he just doesn't feel like it.
