    A couple things to note:
    1. Sit inside kayaks are much more difficult to recover from if you fall out or they capsize.
    2. A sit-on-top kayak is wetter but recovery is somewhat easier if you fall out (you just kind of flop on top).
    3. A sit inside kayak may be more difficult to launch especially if you are overweight or not very flexible.
    4. Tandem sit on top kayak's are a lot of fun and less work than a single.
    If your new to kayaking, the sit-on-top makes the most sense unless you are in cold water.

      Thank you Trey. I've watched several videos explaining the different types and each time I'm left wondering what the real differences between a sit inside and a sit on top are.

    • @jadekayak01
      @jadekayak01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      bullshit.
      learn how to recover by rolling and its easy.
      shit on top cant be rolled

    • @Aaron565
      @Aaron565 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sit on top is only safe in calm waters, its simply dangerous to go into a fast river or ocean without stability. recovery on a sit on top could be deadly if its top heavy and gear gets flipped over.

    • @jadekayak01
      @jadekayak01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A sit on top is not a kayak.
      A kayak bybdefinition has to be sit in.
      Shit on tops are nothing more than surfboards with comfortable and convienient mouldings

    • @jadekayak01
      @jadekayak01 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Aaron565 i disagree a little.
      There are a vast range of surf boards out there now and SOME are suitable for moderate water-sea or river.
      A kayak is far safer only if it is desigened for those specific conditions.
      Sea kayaks are my choice and moderate to rought capabilities are what i look for.
      If i were to use one in rapids it would be a little dangerous compared to white water kayaks.
      Having said that i would never own/use a surfboard for kayak use

    Nice video. I got my first kayak, a sit inside kayak. I was unsure between SI and SOT kayak but i got the SI for the simple fact that the SI allows you to have a better stability and at the same times protects more from cold water and cold wind. This is my consideration since I like to go kayaking even in cold waters and cold seasons.

    The kayak at 2:03, isn't there drain plugs on some of the sit ins? That would be much easier then pumping the water out with that hand pump.
    Those are nice kayaks.

    • @avacadovich
      @avacadovich 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a few of these but If you accidentally kick the drain plug out your boat will sink. \

    You left out one category, the inflatable kayaks. I'm looking at the
    Aquaglide Noyo 90.
    Also does the weight of the individual affect the tippyness of a kayak? A light weight person would make the kayak sit higher in the water.

    Whitewater sub categories
    - creeker (one shown in video) Used for river running (longer in length)
    - playboat (shortest) Short for good maneuvrability (Used for tricks)
    - river runner (cross-breed between playboat and creeker) Can accomodate playboating and river running/waterfalls
    There are also some boats they didn't include:
    squirt boat
    raft
    canoe
    motorboat
    Chuck Norris mobile boat

    I would either like a hybrid or sit in kayak for fishing along the coast in decent weather in California. What do you think would be better for fishing? And by the way, it will probably be near the Jetty in Half Moon Bay so it will be fairly calm.

    I couldn't make up my mind so I have both types, I had a ascend sit on top fishing kayak. But that was to heavy so I traded it for 300 cash and a sit in sundolphin Aruba 10ss. Then I went and bought a sit on top Pelican motion 100, and it's not bad I like the cup holders and storage spaces. Then I also bought a sit in lifetime charger 100 galaxy 2, which is awesome in the water. But doesn't have a cup holder just a small storage area where the nets are. I use the sit on when it's super hot out, and in water that's wavy. The sit on top, I use when it's cooler out on more still water. But the sit on top has me liking it more for the fact of the all the storage it has, and how easy it is to get on and off it.

    Need to know if, or which, kayaks are unsinkable? Clearly the open models can fill with water. But with the sit-on-top models you could have a hatch ajar or something. Maybe they could be made sinkproof with modification.

    I am new to Kayaking. So new I don't have one yet because I don't know what one to get. I want to be able to spend a day out just cruising around but I have 2 kids. I also want to be able to fish from it as well. I hear the sit on top are tiring to tour around. I hear sit in are better, however, fishing would be a pain. All in all I am looking at getting 2 Tandem but want something that isn't too tiring but also offer some recreational purposes as well. My wife will have one with one kid and I with another kid. Any suggestions? BTW I am not looking to do any white water or ocean. Just lakes and something that can take a wave if a storm hits.

    I'm a recreational kayaker, but I'd like to do some river situations where the water could be a bit choppy. I know I'll get wet (though I have dry-pants), and self-bailing scuppers, so what's your opinion of doing that sort of float trip on a river with a set-on-top kayak? I don't do cold weather kayaking, so hypothermia isn't as big of a possibility for me. Summers are when I tend to use my kayak, with possible some early fall, or late spring ventures. Thanks!

    Thanks for the video. It was helpful. I need your advice on what to buy. I am over 50 and live close to a wide river (with reasonable traffic). I would like to take kayaking as a sport (not fishing) to strengthen my upper body. I have had a couple of lessons on a sea kayak and found my body is not flexible enough (knee problems) for it and can't do self rescue. Most likely I will be on my own on that river ( close to the river banks). What would be your recommendation out of all these types?

      Lionheart most recreation style kayaks would do well. The best bet would be to go to a store that allows you to try paddling a few different ones to get an idea what they are like, how stable, can you stand (this part applies to fishing mainly) etc

    I am looking to get into Kayaking and really for my first Kayak, though I like the idea of dry storage areas... I really fell in love with the Canoe Kayak Hybrid and the large storage... I have a waterproof case for my camera and there are many locations that require access to a boat of sorts.. Kayaking out to them would be no problem. I have Kayaked down the spring water rivers of florida.. but would love to go out into the bay(tampa bay a bit.. I am a big guy, so the large Canoe Kayak design looks like it would be an excellent fit especially for me being new to the sport.
    Which Brands of the Canoe/Kayak Hybrids would you recommend for someone like me?

    • @Aaron565

      canoes are dangerous. if you're going to do anything that isnt calm water, or fishing, then you need bulkheads and water tight seals.

    • @ACKTVnetwork

      +Blazin'Blades Hey BB! The reason you haven't been able to find a Zypher 170 is because Wilderness Systems upgraded it to be the Tempest 170 (ack.com/k49n) a while back. The Tempest has hatch upgrades and a rudder, where the Zephyr had a drop down sceg, and there is a slight difference in length, but other than that it's just like the Zephyr featured in this video!

      just buy sundolphine kayaks cause:
      1-they are cheap so you dont realy need to be scared in shallow waters
      2-some medium quality that could let you float
      3if you dont want realy spend 200 dollars you could buy that intex explorer 100 (or200 and 300 ones) i mean they cost 11 dollars

    • @danbezaire1509
      @danbezaire1509 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheSnowyPenguins Depends on what the plans are for the kid, at 12 years old they will out grow kayaks quickly. What type of paddling are they doing? (whitewater, recreational, sea kayaking, etc) if it is whitewater you are likely going to be buying a new boat everyone few years or more to compensate for there growth. With a sea kayak or recreational boat you can look at getting one a little bigger so they grow into it a bit more, but still likely if its a sea kayak to be buying another one down the road depending on how much they grow.

    all day yesterday at the beach (assateague island maryland) i watched someone kayaking riding the waves in similar to surfing. It looked like so much fun. I very much regret not speaking to him asking him questions. His was short but i really dont know exactly which type of kayak it was. Not sure if it was a sit in or sit on. He was taking turns with other people, they were hopping in and out of it easily which makes me think it was a sit on kayak. I wish i knew for sure!

      Hi there! It's going to depend a lot on what style of kayaking you're looking to do, but for most recreational uses, I would recommend at least a 10 foot boat, but would say you would likely be most comfortable in a 12 foot kayak.

      This is something I've never done before and am getting my grandson one for X-mas, so I was thinking me a 12 ft and him a 101/2 we live next to the Clearwater River in Idaho. But we just want basically recreational....Thanks again

      @@marks7352 That will be an amazing place to paddle once you get your kayaks! 12 feet should be perfect as it will give you extra performance in terms of speed and tracking, which is the ability for the kayak to continue in a straight line once you stop paddling, without sacrificing maneuverability. If you wanted to ask more specific questions to nail down which kayaks would be great options for you, our customer reps love getting to have that conversation. 888-828-3828

      Sandy Taveras You can find all of our available kayaks on www.ack.com! Please give us a ring at 1 888 828 3828 if you have any further questions. Thanks!

      Sandy Taveras depending on the style you are looking for will determine the cost. Most recreational kayaks run from 500 - 1500 dollars, white water about the same. Both have some that are higher in price. For sea kayaks/touring kayaks the price on avg runs 1000 - 3000 dollars depending on many factors but can go as high as 5000 dollars.
      If your looking at sea kayaking it is safe to say kayak, paddle, pfd, safety gear, and at least one course will run you approx $2000.
      Regardless of the style you pick DO NOT be cheap with your PFD/lifejacket -- it is always better to spend a little more to get one you will always wear when on the water.

    The main difference is that there are real kayaks, and things that roughly look like kayaks, but aren't, and handle very differently. These pseudo-kayaks are called Sit On Tops, and are much more like paddle boards in construction and operation. Many uneducated people can't tell them apart, despite obvious differences.
