I worked on the Gameboy Advance version (in Namco Museum). It had a couple of hacks because the arcade source I ported from was for the Japanese version and we wanted to use the US graphics. I have some lookup logic in the sprite drawing routines that switch pages and objects so that the graphics work properly (also, I had to return early without drawing when the game logic requests to draw the additional banner that's in the Japanese version). The other hack was with the horizon graphics. In the arcade version they are drawn one character at a time and this is too slow for the GBA, so I put them all in a single sprite (wide) and I shift it's position based on the game logic. It's not easy to tell, but you would see it if you dumped the cart. I solved the scrolling maps in PacMania on the GBA in a similar way.
You did a fine job ! :D I still play this game on the GBA from time to time. Glad to meet someone who worked on the teams that produced the things that made my life worth living ! :D
It was a fun (and challenging) project to work on. I also ported Galaxian and Galaga to GBA, and Pacmania in the Pac Man Collection cart we did.
Bob Hickman great job!
I actually happen to have a cartridge of Pac-Man Collection. It's really fun, especially Pac-Man Arrangement. However, why is the music in Pac-Mania sound like it's been chopped in half? Could you not put in the other bits?
Bob Hickman would it be possible to put pole position 2 in the gba version of Namco museum
You always knew you were in an arcade when you heard that Pole Position music blaring out somewhere in the background. That, and the deep pulsating thump from a Pac-man machine.
And Guile’s theme coming from a nearby Street Fighter machine
Hell Yeah
@Brett Alt OMG Revolution X.😆
I always loved the Pole Position II pre-race jingle. "Prepare to qualify!"
PLEASE NOTE: I will be taking the next several weeks off from producing. I am currently in a transition & am attempting to find employment. I have not had enough time lately to dedicate to producing. Hopefully I'll be back on My feet again soon & will be able to resume. Pray for me. :) Much love to you all & thank you all for the support that You've given to this channel. Hang in there !!
thanks :)
Good luck on your job hunt. Though I thought I'd better mention this. In both the description and on the video itself, you forget to include the II in Pole Position II for the Namco 50th Anniversary game.
David315842 I mentioned it in the extra notes section after the list.
OK. :) Once again good luck with the job hunt. :)
Good luck on finding another job.By the way i find funny how fat,F1 cars are in the bbc micro version of pole position.
The "But Clyde!" signs you saw in the GBA, N64, PS1, and 50th Anniversary footages are based on a scene in an episode of a Pac-Man TV series that aired in the western half of the world during the 1980s.
ssestakhch that sign wasn't in the 50th anniversary version
ssestakhch It’s also on Mame & Dreamcast
One question I always had with that sign is...why even have it if the show it's based on is already dead
@@rynmaymay9309 probably a goofy hat-tip to Namco's "Pac-Land" arcade game. Getting that together surely involved at least one "so, we meet again" between Namco and Hanna-Barbera.
*But Clyde!*
the atari version is actually really nice looking, kinda looks like a modern tech demo!
I did a flawless run in pole position 1 on the Namco museum 50th anniversary version and that was hard to do but it’s one of my favorite versions of pole position besides the mame/ Arcade
16:13 This is the version of the game that is featured on the cult classic '80s movie D.A.R.Y.L.
I like the Vectrex version. Love those vectors =)
+CrazySandtrooper Mark Bussler would love the Vectrex version.
(Laughing) The PS2, Xbox, GCN, and PC voice saying, "Prepare to qualify." is so hilarious!!!!!
PREPERR TO QUALIFAH
+The RetroGameNinja (laughing) That's what it actually sounds like!
+GG Enderbomb (laughing) That's the best part!
Pepèto Qualafa
Great job as always, Gaming History Source! I've heard that the Atari 5200 version controls really well with the analog joysticks.
I played both titles at the arcade and on my 5200 to death as a kid back then. Everything about this series is still impressive to this day.
I actually got to where I enjoyed playing the Windows version (via Mouse) the most. Surprised me, but I got decent at playing that way.
The arcade sit-down will of course remain the best, always.
The BBC Micro version is surprisingly performant, compared to ZX Spectrum. I think that's at the cost of half-height sprites and identical cars. Same goes for the Vic-20. Even the 2600 looked and played better. It's too bad no one attempted the digitized speech until the Windows version.I would have thought at least the MSDOS would have it.
The gameplay on the C64 version of Pole Position was pretty solid,
although the graphics could have been better done. The vic 20 version
really impressed me considering the system couldn't do sprites.
I remember dumping so many quarters into this! also semi related...the cartoon in the 80s was great too. man now I feel old lol
On what port you played it?
1:40 "Coney Island, modify the rope." That what it sounds like.
It actually said, "Good driving! You qualified the race."
You know it's a good game when even the 2600 port is really solid.
There is absolutely no correlation - or even rational supposition - between the two properties. Many good games have poor 2600 ports. Many bad games have good 2600 ports. Kids get increasingly moronic with each passing generation.
Seriously love these compare videos. Hope you find something soon so we can get more videos like this.
I remember great time playing it on my Atari 65XE at home! The game was really good! The Atari XE port was pretty decent btw
Bandai Namco needs to give Pole Position the Daytona Championship USA 3 treatment by not just offering more tracks based on real F1 circuits like Spa Francorchamps, Monza, Sepang, etc. but also allowing players race with custom race cars from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s
i played the shit out of this in the arcades as a kid.........i had the Atari 2600 version man i played it for hours thinking it was the greatest thing ever!!! i miss the 80's man.
Atari 800XL/5200 BEST VERSION by far on the 8-Bits! I grew up with this version, that's why. :P
The ZX Spectrum version is surprisingly good! And it can avoid the clash of color attributes very well
Great video!
Thank you for posting this.
PP2 on Commodore 64 sure did improve over PP1.
The gameplay on the C64 version of Pole Position was pretty solid,
although the graphics could have been better done. The vic 20 version
really impressed me considering the system couldn't do sprites.
That 2600 version is quite impressive, all things considered.
The ZX Spectrum really knows how to mow the grass.
Prepare to qualify.
+heyitsme ''Congrats you've qualified to race!''
Such nostalgia.
Prepare for a qualified race!
PAPARAPAPAPAPAPA! PARAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAAAA! *PREPARE TO QUALIFY!*
The car on TI99 looks like made from cardboard
The Tower of Druaga signs finally make sense to me.
Even though Tower of Druaga didn’t exist until 1984.
@@mariodykstra6555 maybe they were promoting it.
My 7800 came with pole position 2 and i remember thinking home games will never look better
I miss 32:31 (Namco Musuem - Xbox, PS2, GameCube, and Windows) I want to play them again someday....
in a ways i always hated the announcers voice mainly due to it sounding like she's eating the Mic. but its does bring back a lot of fond memories of playing in the arcades back in the day.
Commodore 64 looks great
suprprised theres no NES versio, considering most of namcos 80 arcade games got a NES release
Idk why the original pole position is used over the past years and pole position ll was not much loved/used within those years... i wonder why but i can guess a couple of reasons...
Your videos are all great they just miss one feature that is 60 fps.
On your description you have #23 labeled as Pole Position 1, when it's II. Sorry to nitpick, just pointing it out.
Good look on your transition, hope you find something soon.
6:03 ❤️❤️
I thought the one sign that Blinky appeared on was in the arcade versions too.
I have the arcade version on a Plug 'N Play but it lacks the voices for some reason.
yeah. I have that plug n play too. I acquired it shortly after completing this video. Otherwise I would have added it.
man i love the pole position, especially pp 2 cause you get test (Indy) suzuka and seaside (82 long beach)
I so wish Namco would release Namco Museum 1 - 5 on PS4 with HD Virtual Tours.
What’s that pole position song that plays in 0:05
Wait a sec. I played the PSX version of the first Namco Museum and it didn't have the female voice saying "Prepare to qualify!" and ... whatever the heck she says after you qualify in Pole Position (same deal with Pole Position II in Namco Museum vol. 3). Was this version of Namco Museum from the Greatest Hits release or something?
Not sure whats up. This was emulated so I can't tell you what's going on with it. But it was there for me.
MadVash2005 She says: "Good driving! You qualified for the race!"
MadVash2005 Yeah! How is the girls speech in the PS1 version here but it's not there when I play it on my PlayStation!
Gaming History Source Your not lying! I played the Japanese version of Namco Museum Volume 1 and the girl's Japanese speech was there! WHAT?!
All Access Gaming Why would I lie ? lol
“You’re going to play POLE POSITION!”
30:58 Why does it keep crashing into a tower of Druaga sign?!!!!!
He loves the game.
Why was the "prepare to qualify" text and voice changed in some of the re-releases?
Could someone please tell me what the beginning organ music was from? Or called?
I have a plug and play Namco ms pacman 5 in 1 with this on it.
I have that one too! The one where the top of the joy stick turns for control!
Did they smooth the graphics out on the Namco Museum 50th Anniversary port?
When she tells you that you qualified, does she sound a little snarky?
Hahahahaha yeah, you made me chuckle 😆 she does doesn't she.
The Intellivision port will take some getting used to, let me tell you!
why because of the graphics? Don you know that good gameplay is always 9858949494949 percent more important than graphics
@@theyamo7219
It's because of the Intellivision's control disc.
Yeah, that's true, it's probably one of the worst controllers I've ever used aside from the Arcadia 2001 controller.
On arcade mode on Pole position I normally get 2nd to 3rd position on hard mode. Home version I can get 1st.On Pole position 2 video game I haven't tried.
I prefer the Namco Museum versions of Pole Position 1 and 2 because they have better sounds and better graphics.
+Dustin Nunn Better graphics??? Uhhhh.....the Namco Museum games on PS1 have the same graphics as the arcade versions.
+All Access Gaming hi
Miles Tails Hi!
All Access Gaming hi
Miles Tails Hi! :)
Did this video in Hi Def because of the font on the opening.
I've play this game in Arcade (the 2nd) and atari 800, good port
Pole Position Should Deserve A Live Action Movie.
I like how the speed never changes on the Atari 2600.
Atari XE / 5200 versions are very similar to the arcade.
Uau! Que trabalho! Parabéns!
The sound in the arcade games are just so ridiculous I could not help but laugh.
What MAME controller configuration did you use? You seem to have good control in the arcade versions.
if you don't have a wheel. use a trackball !
the control is steering wheel
22:40 255mph.... in what looks more like a go-kart than an f1 car.
That's Atari 7800 for ya.
WHATS WITH THE SOUNDS? PP2 has a turbo wine
good driving, you've qualified to race
Say whatever you want pole position 2 for the commodore 64 is the proof that if you try hard enough you can make a better game
Prepare to Qualify!
i need that stereo PP theme song
Do you want it in a WAV format for a system sound or something ? Or an MP3 format. Because I can get it for you if you like.
wingnut4427
Either would do fine
GUYS! Gaming History Source ISN'T LYING! The girl's speech is there on Namco Museum Volume 1! WHAT?!
well at least in the JP and EU versions. As far as I am aware, it doesn't exist in the US version. probably a bug
Vectrex!!!
+Vincent GR Mark Bussler would love the Vectrex port.
Vectrex port is looking good
English : " Prepare to qualify ! "
Japanese : ???
34:08 that's not the 50th anniversary that's just namco museum
Yeah. I know. It's really easy to get your information mixed up when comparing a large group of games. Some of these videos take months on end to complete & information get's scrambled up. :(
Oh
My 2 favorite racing games... :)
I was soooooooooooooo pissed off with this game not being on the ST.
well, there's a homebrew one coming out.
I was soooo pissed off when pole position 1 and 2 weren't in the switch version of Namco museum
@@societyender5297 He probably meant back then
silly how the starting line moves independently from the curb on the C64
The gameplay on the C64 version of Pole Position was pretty solid,
although the graphics could have been better done. The vic 20 version
really impressed me considering the system couldn't do sprites.
You can hear the vtec kicking in on Activision version
F1 1999 looks pretty good!
I played the crap out of the GBA version. Good times...
Anyone else get a headache from the ZX version?
Not really...
Good flowers try to fight the road?
No, it's "Good driving! You qualified for the race!"
Gabriel Brown
Even the C64 had a better voice synth than that LOL XD
Thanks! For the longest time I had no clue what the game was saying. :D
The background in the MS-DOS version looks like a wasteland.
For me i prefer the PlayStation 1 version of Pole Positions I and II.
I love this game.
lol the C64 PPII cracked by The Inner Circle... lulz.
Wait, so Atari owned the rights to pole position?
Great game
This game was 50 cent to play, unlike the normal 25 cent so, I never played it.
But they are cent not a lot
Not even an euro
Who hear remembers the Pole Position Atari 2600 Commercial?
I played on gameboy and ps2
Those who have been working we've been doing a lot of people who want to see prepare to qualify
SCV version please
+keito keigo I tried.. It wouldn't work. :(
Why wasn't there an NES version of this game?
I used to ask myself the same question.
wingnut4427 An NES version of Pole Position would have kicked some serious ass. Plus, they did stellar versions of other big arcade classics like Galaga and Centipede. So why no Pole Position???? A mind boggling question for sure.
@@rklynch8558 And yet no any official ports of both Rally-Xs releases.
@@Nestalgba92023 That's another game i'd liked to have seen a home console port of for sure. Preferably on the NES or Atari 7800. In fact, I find it more than a little surprising there wasn't a 7800 port of Rally-X, considering they ported over several arcade classics during it's lifespan. Guess that one must have flown under their radar for whatever reason..
Nes got it only that it had a different name and wasn't of Namco.
Its name is F1 Race
Compare Rick Dangerous Pls
it's now on my list. might be a while though.
.
I will be able to get the best oppointments
Oppointments is not a word, moron
33:59
Pathetic that only the PS1 got the authentic voices. Dream cast could have supported the original voice, and it's just... wrong... in the 50th anniversary edition. As southern as the voice sounds in that version, they'd better be racing in Daytona!
DJCandyManMike I played the ps1 version and it doesn't even say prepare to qualify
Windows had the original voices
Pole Position Is From Atari??? YOU GOTTA BE KITTEN ME!
They did the ports here in NORTH AMERICA via licensing . It's actually by Namco
2:39 Oh wah
???
@@GamingHistorySource its Unit 51's appeal when you s3lect him in small arms for the Xbox 360.
The Arcade Versions were Great but until GBA Version played the others played like Garbage and wasn't worth it! And this coming from a Retro Style Gamer!
