King Kong was one of the greatest movies I ever saw 17 years ago. When I was in the theater with my dad sis and grandma I was just waiting and waiting to see kong himself and the dinosaurs. And by the time the movie arrived to skull island I felt so excited and relaxed . Peter Jackson did a fantastic job directing this movie
An often overlooked movie. I have great memories of it. The actual full sized 'Venture' ship was still docked on the far size of Wellington harbour for years after the production and I used to go there to see it regularly before they finally got rid of it around 2010 I think.
I remember seeing this film back in 05. I was 11 and hadn't seeing the original yet or any other Peter Jackson film yet , and it still remains my fav king kong movie and my favourite monster movie out of any other . The splendour , scale , detail , craft and passion PJ adds is super admirable and inspiring. So much heart of the characters to the cinematography and the score is superb, among my top 10 favourites of all time. i do acknowledge a fair bit on the boat over to the island does drag and probably should be cut , but still adore this movie . 9.4/10 Almost as good as LOTR Trilogy , which are my favourite movies of all time .
This movie and official King Kong game 2005 were my favorites when I was a kid. Both of those made me very interested of doing LEGO animation short film about the King Kong (i didn't manage to film it, although i had built almost every character, painted backgrounds and had Kong toy and built up cardboard Empire State Building). It's funny to think that Peter Jackson tried to do something similar when he was a kid.

I love the original, but this version was also amazing. I grew up with it, and it definitely still holds up to this day. Skull Island and Kong vs Godzilla were just awful.
Why do u think they were awful? I loved both of those films, and I could even go as far as to say that, GvK is on the same level (maybe even better) than this film. This film suffers from being extremely slow, while the other two take far less time to get to the point.
Boy, I remember reading Bo Goldman's script for the Universal version when Paul Newman was going to be Carl Denham. (His character flies one of the planes at the end.) I have Peter Jackson's 3 hour version which includes two favorite moments from the original, the attack of the stegosaurus and the one on the river with the makeshift raft. I love it when a filmmaker's dream project comes to fruition. The 3D ride the same team created for Universal is mind blowing... replacing the original ride that I videotaped before it burned down.
Totally loved this movie, when kong (spoiler follows). Slid of the top of the ESB tears trickled from my eyes it was so convincing, one of my early blu ray purchases. Superb
As a huge fan of Mighty Joe Young, my sister, mom, and I were super excited for this movie and went to theaters to watch it (we were kinda tight for cash those days so that was a big deal). I loved every second! This is one of my top 10 movies of all time.
My main problem with Jackson's Kong is in the original they got to Skull Island at the 17 minute mark. In Jackson's, they get there at the 57 minute mark. And the spider pit
Jackson's greatest fault is he 'falls in love' with his projects. When you're in love you WANT to linger for ten minutes over Kong swinging on vines as an Allosaurus attacks. The casual audience would have preferred perhaps 45 seconds of it. When you're in love you WANT to stretch a 1 1/2 hour film to almost 4 hours. What Jackson needs for his films is a ruthless, merciless editor.
If you have ever heard Peter Jackson talk about films you would know he loves escapism. He wants to take you on an adventure that takes hours to build and if you allow yourself to get lost in the movie hours seem like minutes.
The attention to detail on 1933 New York is amazing in Peter Jacksons version. Especially the final Ariel scenes looking down from the top of the Empire State Building as New York is waking up. I really like this version, actually each version has a special place to me.
I love it when people complain about modern movies and their "sequalitist". I just point out that King Kong's sequel (Son of Kong) came out the very same year as the original. Today's Hollywood is actually Hollywood under control.
Jackson looks exhausted in those clips at the end! Loved the movie, but I can understand why the bug pit scene was cut in the original. I honestly didn't care anything about those characters. Only Kong and Ann is what kept me interested.
I grew up with the original on vhs and watched it weekend after weekend. Jackson’s version though flawed in parts, captured so much magic and added so much meat to the bones. I loved it and have since Kong himself is wonderfully depicted and fleshed out
This was such a good movie. I love it. I also enjoyed the originals because I loved the stop motion effects and there was hardly any movies around with decent effects when I was kid
Saw this in theaters. This is the definitive edition of King Kong. This tops the 1933 edition. This King Kong makes the 1976 (I think), edition with Jessica Lange irrelevant.
When my daughter was three we watched this movie a bunch if times. She was convinced there was actually 2 giant apes. Her brain just couldn't handle a monster being both good AND bad.
Imagine picturing the 1976 version in the style of Jackson's. Remembered watching that one years ago when I was little. Might've been right after the other one came out on DVD.
This movie is a perfect tribute to King Kong and those kinds of movies, as well as being a really good movie in and of itself. Almost everything in it works amazingly, creating an absolutely phenomenal work of cinema, and one of the best examples that the kaiju/giant monster genre has to offer.
While not as good as the original 1933 film, I like this movie, but it is too long and could have been shorter if the New York stuff at the beginning was streamlined
I feel like it could have used more action, plot and actual tension. Too much of the movie was just walking around. I still like the movie but I think Kong Skull Island fixes a lot of what this movie's problems were, though Kong in the 2005 has much more personality and feels truly like a real gorilla.
People complain about the runtime for peter Jacksons King Kong and that's fine it's their opinion. But if you have ever listened to Peter talk about filmmaking he often mentions escapism. He wants to take the viewers on an adventure that takes hours to build sometimes. And even with the Lord of the rings films if you allow yourself to get lost in the world and story hours seem like minutes. Peter is a master filmmaker because of this.
Jackson King Kong still to this day it's my favorite Kong movie. The fight with the t-rex is the highlight and the pit with all the spiders and insects Just a master peice of cinema
Actually he copied much from 1976. The Kong Ann relationship is from 76. It was never in 1933. In 1933 Ann felt nothing for Kong. She was terrified and screaming the whole way through. Many other things were taken from 1976.
Although Jackson dislikes the '76 remake, his version actually has more in common story-wise with it than with the '33 original, which Jackson claims is his favorite film. He made the same mistake as in '76 by having the girl make friends with Kong, like he's some kind of big teddy bear.
@@lyndoncmp5751 She reacts properly in the original, which is key to why we feel sorry for Kong and makes the final line "it was beauty killed the beast" so poignant.
Good movie like the visuals, it's little long, my two favorite scenes of courses. Is when he takes on the the T-Rexs and the final battle at the end on top of the Empire State Building.

I remember watching this the first time it came out and was blown away by it. Years later it holds up as one of the best remakes of all time. I would take that a step further and say it has one of the saddest endings too. People might say it is overlong and special effects driven but that is the point. You need to have it at this length to tell the story to its fullest extent, and this film really builds up on its characters, especially Kong. By the end, once Kong falls from the Empire state building, it's so sad and devastating. One of the best films and my personal favorite.
Hi. worked on this. LOCATION for KONG on stage was Auckland opera house as its bigger and more ornate than Wellington. Word was Howard Shore's score sounded too much like LOTR. LOTR: ROTK pickups for the extended edition were being filmed on the same backlot as filming for KONG commenced. The day i turned up for work they were filming the merry/pippin 'cant hold his grog' scene whilst Denham rushing to escape the studio heads was being filmed only 30 meters away. There was a small overlap of production, i always thought that KONG had alot of the production look developed by the 3rd LOTR film, and by this stage the crew was a well oiled machine of creatives. Because Kong was earth based alot of the props and vehicles were real but for anything that couldnt be sourced was built and you couldnt tell it wasnt the real McCoy. The Vintage Aviator Ltd. (TVAL) built the Hell diver planes from scratch using original blueprints held at Smithsonian. The plans were released for the film under the provisio that our hell divers would not actually fly, although in every way they were made exactly to the plans and could have really flown. Hell diver crew cameos like Rick Porras (LOTR producer) Rick Baker, Peter Jackson and Gene DeMarco (prod manager for TVAL at that time, read: Peter Jackson and the Airplane Thief on vanity fair for what happened to him in the end) I got to work on different crews for this film which in hindsite was a rarety. I helped different crews make props and build vehicles. two nights on set for night shoots and workshop work making cool things requested from different departments. It was a golden time. I was miscredited but some didnt even get a credit. I dont particularly enjoy KING KONG as a film (animal cruelty being a big reason) but Pete is a master director and it is top quality prod design and execution. Take it from one of the crew.
What a surprise to find someone that was there. I edited this video. Pleasure to (in some way) meet you. It was a great time watching all the hours of Making Of material. Hope you're doing well. Kind regards from México.
I grew up watching the original Kong and could definitely see his love for it in his version. That said, I always felt that he tried to do too much with it. Like every sequence that was recreated from the original was up to 11 when it would've been fine at a 5. The T-Rex scene is a perfect example. It could've just been the one that he fought for the whole fight, but instead we had to sit thru all these near misses of multiple ones almost getting Ann when we all knew that wasn't gonna happen. Stuff like that bloated the runtime. But I will say that the Empire State sequence is brilliant and beautifully shot.
There was also a live-theatre version of King Kong, that played first in Melbourne n 2013 (which my wife and I saw) and on Broadway in 2018-19. Kong was an amazing puppet, operated by a dozen or so people.
Quite a few people say the movoe was too long but honestly I say the movoe was amazingly well paced as with a lot of his movies and thats what I love about him, he doesn't just push out a movie to get a quick bucl like most dorectors these days he loves and deeply cares for these films and wants to turn them into something really special and that he did.
I love the scope and ambition of this version, and the performances and effects are undeniably top-notch. The only thing that holds it back from true greatness is the editing. It seems strange to say, given the mastery of the CG artists, but I became weary of the big action pieces: the dino chase, t-Rex fight, and the spider pit are all just too long. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a very good movie, but just shy of being great.

What that's awesome. Do you have any pictures of the ship?
Is not that overlooked, many people liked it
I remember seeing this film back in 05.
I was 11 and hadn't seeing the original yet or any other Peter Jackson film yet , and it
still remains my fav king kong movie and my favourite monster movie out of any other .
Almost as good as LOTR Trilogy , which are my favourite movies of all time .
The King Kong game on the Xbox was so good, nothing even came close to the graphics back then and it was a lot of fun.
@@LordKohaegan a lot of fun? dude the game was best dino game of all time... I wish there were more games like this... actually I like game even more than the film
The King Kong game was thebest movie adaption game I've ever played honestly. It was like Medal of Honor meets Turok.
@@LordKohaegan Its a game I wish there were mods for. Either mods of its monsters for fallout 3, or to alter the Kong game.
@@GeteMachine better
This is the best King Kong film and no one can tell me otherwise 😤
I randomly discovered you guys as I usually just watch history bios- but I threw on the" nostalgia goggles" on and learned so so much about actors and movies I long forgot- thank you so much for all your hard work- to everyone involved.
I have the version with the canyon scene, and i love this film. It’s so visceral. Yeah, a little campy, but that’s what gives it that vintage vibe. Great film. A pure love letter.
I personally loved it. Granted I came in with 0 expectations, didnt even know Peter Jackson was involved :D
I will always remember being ten years old seeing the king Kong poster in the theater and it amazed me the cgi was like magic his face looked so real and his nose was heart shaped I loved it. I saw it in theaters and loved this movie I will not accept any hate towards it lol.
This movie VFX holds up to this day it was amazing
There is nothing else like this epic and gigantic movie. Always one of my favorites since seeing it as a 12 year old in the Winter of 2005.
When I was young I thought the beginning was boring and long, but I still liked it. Watching it while being older and noticing all the little details that feed the build up I absolutely love it. It’s such a great film
Uhhh.....are you aware you're showing clips from the wrong Brain Dead? There's the 1990 Brain Dead, then there's the 1992 Dead Alive (Aka Brain Dead on the UK)
You're showing clips from Adam Simon's 1992 Brain Dead, not Dead Alive.
That was bothering me , thanks for bringing it up . I love Dead alive . People can call it whatever they want but to me it's DEAD ALIVE and I will never except another name.
Had to stop the video to see if anyone had made this comment. 😄
despite its first half being a wee bit TOO LONG...this is STILL my FAVORITE KING KONG movie.
What do you mean by "WTF happened to" (then a given movie name)?
Everytime I expect something dissasterous or terrible, or something forgotten, like:
- Somebody threw it into the trash can?
- someone spelled coffee on it?!!
But no, it is just a coverage review/ piece of admiration to the given movie.. :^(
I fall for it everytime.. I start watching, then at the middle I realize it is something basic! Merely a topic on production notes!! Nothing serious "HAPPENED" to it!! And I mean YEARS after it's release! Which is what I expect what the video will be about! >:(
What a waste of my TH-cam time.. I have no tims for fake promises..
It is like someone asks: WTF happened to your car???
And then the owner goes on narrating how it was made in Japan, painted, tested, then brought to the showroom, then how he bought it, where and when he drove it, and then goes and says that it is now sitting in his garage.. safe and sound.. :-(
WTF.. >:^(
Basically? NOTHING happened!!
"WTF happened?"..
- NOTHING!!!!!!!!!
It was all good.. >:^U
I love this movie so much it has a great adventure vibe to it that i never felt with any other movie
I loved both of those movies
Nothing rally beat the 3 V. rex fight with Kong in that movie from he fluid and very ape like movements. Even compared to monster movies today.
The only King Kong movie I watched more than once.
Loved this movie! Saw it twice opening weekend! The T-Rex fight scene is still an amazing thing to watch.
How has more people not seen this top quality my man
My main problem with Jackson's Kong is in the original they got to Skull Island at the 17 minute mark. In Jackson's, they get there at the 57 minute mark. And the spider pit
"Isn't that the one with Jack Black?" - Everyone I tried and failed to get to see the movie
Totally agree
If you have ever heard Peter Jackson talk about films you would know he loves escapism. He wants to take you on an adventure that takes hours to build and if you allow yourself to get lost in the movie hours seem like minutes.
@@codyschale263 escape into the film is fine not living in it for four hours he needed to edit.
@@birdman6427 I get what you're saying.. I just completely disagree 👍
But when the audience falls in love with it too, that's not a problem. I definitely see why Peter Jackson loved it and that's why I love it
I cried when Kong fell. I cried over a cgi ape!
The attention to detail on 1933 New York is amazing in Peter Jacksons version. Especially the final Ariel scenes looking down from the top of the Empire State Building as New York is waking up. I really like this version, actually each version has a special place to me.
NYC is called the city that never sleeps
I love it when people complain about modern movies and their "sequalitist". I just point out that King Kong's sequel (Son of Kong) came out the very same year as the original.
Today's Hollywood is actually Hollywood under control.
All I can remember about this movie is a review I read that mentioned King Kong's "heart-shaped nose" as a sign of love for Whatsername.
Jackson looks exhausted in those clips at the end! Loved the movie, but I can understand why the bug pit scene was cut in the original. I honestly didn't care anything about those characters. Only Kong and Ann is what kept me interested.
This film is an absolute MASTERPIECE. Just watched it again in 4K and it was absolutely moving and insane. Even my seven year old loved it.
I grew up with the original on vhs and watched it weekend after weekend.
Jackson’s version though flawed in parts, captured so much magic and added so much meat to the bones. I loved it and have since
Kong himself is wonderfully depicted and fleshed out
This was such a good movie. I love it. I also enjoyed the originals because I loved the stop motion effects and there was hardly any movies around with decent effects when I was kid
Saw this in theaters. This is the definitive edition of King Kong. This tops the 1933 edition. This King Kong makes the 1976 (I think), edition with Jessica Lange irrelevant.
this movie has a special place in my heart, being my favourite movie at 4 years old i still rate it as one of my favourites of all time
When my daughter was three we watched this movie a bunch if times. She was convinced there was actually 2 giant apes. Her brain just couldn't handle a monster being both good AND bad.
That's pretty wholesome actually 🙂
Imagine picturing the 1976 version in the style of Jackson's. Remembered watching that one years ago when I was little. Might've been right after the other one came out on DVD.
We're getting old aren't we.......
This movie is a perfect tribute to King Kong and those kinds of movies, as well as being a really good movie in and of itself. Almost everything in it works amazingly, creating an absolutely phenomenal work of cinema, and one of the best examples that the kaiju/giant monster genre has to offer.
This movie was a very good set up for the video game. It had very realistic dinosaur features, and a great play through experience.
While not as good as the original 1933 film, I like this movie, but it is too long and could have been shorter if the New York stuff at the beginning was streamlined
Naw, it was better on every level.
My feelings exactly! Overall, a great movie, but it just takes a bit too long to get going.
I feel like it could have used more action, plot and actual tension. Too much of the movie was just walking around. I still like the movie but I think Kong Skull Island fixes a lot of what this movie's problems were, though Kong in the 2005 has much more personality and feels truly like a real gorilla.
Best King Kong movie ever made 🎬🎥👍
People complain about the runtime for peter Jacksons King Kong and that's fine it's their opinion.
This was a great movie, the bugs and slugs part was terrifying as a kid, far more terrifying than the other monsters
Peter Jackson’s King Kong is my favorite film of all time. I never get tired watching it. The film is absolutely beautiful.
Jackson King Kong still to this day it's my favorite Kong movie.
The fight with the t-rex is the highlight and the pit with all the spiders and insects
Just a master peice of cinema
Side Note:: Howard Shore worked on SNL before becoming a film score artist. He was the Musical Director.
One of my favorite films. I love both the first one and PJ's equally, for different reasons.
Jackson put back into this story what De Laurentiis' cynical 1970s version left out...the romance, the pageantry and the majesty.
Actually he copied much from 1976. The Kong Ann relationship is from 76. It was never in 1933. In 1933 Ann felt nothing for Kong. She was terrified and screaming the whole way through.
Many other things were taken from 1976.
HA!......somebody else understands..
Although Jackson dislikes the '76 remake, his version actually has more in common story-wise with it than with the '33 original, which Jackson claims is his favorite film. He made the same mistake as in '76 by having the girl make friends with Kong, like he's some kind of big teddy bear.
@@lyndoncmp5751
She reacts properly in the original, which is key to why we feel sorry for Kong and makes the final line "it was beauty killed the beast" so poignant.
i love this movie! one of the very few modern adventure movies. there's nothing else like it nowadays.
greetings from germany :)
As a Kong fan I loved your video!👍👍
This is still the BEST version...by far.
Good movie like the visuals, it's little long, my two favorite scenes of courses. Is when he takes on the the T-Rexs and the final battle at the end on top of the Empire State Building.
The original is superior, but this is definitely the best remake/reboot of Kong.
2:27 "You can make your own King Kong movie. Go ahead, we'll wait"

Underrated movie.
Same. 💯🙃💯💯
Is not, this video is just clickbait
the Bill Pullman Braindead scenes are cracking me up.
Hi. worked on this.
Yes, much of it was over the top and bloated. Again and again.
Excellent fleshed out story!
Admittedly though, compared to the original 30's version: terrible script..
Especially considering PJ's work on LOTR...
I can't believe I missed your upload 😲😲😲
This movie is a masterpiece
There was also a live-theatre version of King Kong, that played first in Melbourne n 2013 (which my wife and I saw) and on Broadway in 2018-19. Kong was an amazing puppet, operated by a dozen or so people.
Great video! Now WTF HAPPENED TO TOM SIZEMORE!!?
Quite a few people say the movoe was too long but honestly I say the movoe was amazingly well paced as with a lot of his movies and thats what I love about him, he doesn't just push out a movie to get a quick bucl like most dorectors these days he loves and deeply cares for these films and wants to turn them into something really special and that he did.
Would love to see a WTF Happened to The Hobbit too. Great videos though thanks JoBlo!
The spider pit scene is what i love about this movie , it makes me laugh as hell. 😂😂😂
Fantastic film 🎥
9:32 I am late to this but wow Gandalf trying to spoil the goods 🤣
Something i never noticed before. When he's fighting the final T-Rex, Kong bites it's tongue off & spits it out before he rips it's mouth open.
Truly astonishing film 🎥
The story is told is such a visually and emotionally stunning way.
The score the visuals and acting 👌 10/10
Peter Jacksons king kong is my go to choice.
No films equal the talent of Jacksons crew.
Marvel 😂 no thanks
I love this movie. It was my first King Kong movie and I, for the first time in my life, wholly empathized with a CGI creature in a non-animated film, even nearly shedding a tear at Carl Denham's famous line at the end.
The bug scene is terrifying and disturbing. I absolutely love that scene but also hate it
For me, Naomi Watts was the charm and the hook in the film.
She simply GLOWED in this film
Still absolutely love this movie
My favorite modern day version of KIng Kong. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Me my girlfriend & our son watched this movie when it came out, i thought it was an ok movie, my girlfriend even bought me the king kong ps2 game at the time for my birthday & the game was awesome with great graphics or maybe im remembering it through rose tinted glasses like golen eye for N64
Jackson really is a true visionary. I'm still waiting for him and Del Toro to team up on a shared project! =)
If anyone is going to remake a monster movie... It has to be Rob Zombie.
Underrated movie ever. Jackson's King Kong versus was excellent
Peter Jackson absolutely got as much as he possibly could out of the King Kong mythos. There's little more he could have wrung out of that 3hr 21min movie.
The ‘famed’ opera house in Wellington mentioned is actually the Civic theatre in Auckland. Only 650km apart.
This was such a great and fun movie. I have good memories of going to the theater with my girlfriend at the time and enjoying it so much. I then went back and saw it another time by myself. Good times.
a very respectful retelling. KING KONG (2005)
I remember watching this movie as a kid and playing the absolute PEAK movie-licensed game based on it. So good
Still love this move til this day. One of my top favorites. The scene where Blood Worms eat the cook alive in the pit will always be burned onto my brain. It’s true terror, and really encapsulates the horror that skull island had to offer. Grotesquely perfect.
