The scene towards the end where he buries his secret in a tree in the wall of a Cambodian temple, that was just devastating and yet so beautiful and unforgettable.
I'm reading A Layman's guide to Psychiatry and psychoanalysis and and the first chapters discuss this Images that we have in our minds about reality ( our own reality ) and reality itself and it totally makes sense haha now i see relationships and aspects of life from a totally different angle .
To me the whole movie seems like a memory piece, something someone experienced long back and now recollecting through the hazy cloud of time. The movie seems to be a collection of vignettes remembered by a sad lovelorn lover, nostalgic about the love he/she lost and cannot get back. I also think the person remembering is Mr. Chow.
Watching Wong Kar wais movies is like walking through memories you have never experienced . I watched Chung King Express and Fallen angels and they have like created a void in my heart and have sat there and they refuse to leave . But now I'm going to force myself to watch in the mood for love .
This movie is one of the most beautiful films that I’ve ever seen. Tony Leung is absolutely amazing in it, totally captivating. I hope this video moves a lot of people to go and find it.
It certainly looks interesting, and having watched this video and read your comment I'm definitely going to check it out now. Thanks for this, all of you! :)
I remember when we discussed this film after watching it in one of my film classes. We were talking about how good it was, but how if we described it to people who hadn't seen it might not understanding. How do you explain that it's so captivating to see a man whispering into a wall or a woman walking through a hallway? Those parts don't sound interesting to talk about, but in the moment they are striking.
Interesting reading about the protagonists loving the imagined versions of each other considering what happens in the events of the movie's sequel 2046.
I wrote three papers about this film for one of my classes last semester, referenced this video COUNTLESS times. one of my favorite videos on this website
I love this movie, to me it’s about how morally upright people often have harder lives because they make conscious decisions to do the right thing which can ultimately make them unhappy
I’m in the mood for love Simply because you’re near me! Funny, but when you’re near me I’m in the mood for love. If there are clouds above, If it will rain, we’ll let it! But for tonight, forget it ‘Cuz I’m in the mood for love.
This is my favorite film, hands down. I tried to explain the gist of it to some friends and I got bogged down on the music, the camera movements, the story. I didn't know how to convey everything that this film offers in my own words. Everything in this movie is sad and beautiful at the same time. Thanks, crashcourse.
One of the greatest movies of all time. It got me hooked on oriental cinema since I saw it. The way Kar wai uses music is incredible and I can never listen to nat king cole without seeing kar wai´s visuals , slow motion and color moods. Another great movie was "the sequel" - 2046 which follows what happened to the characters when in the mood for love ends.
I hope they do multiple seasons of Crash Course Film Criticism, just like how they do CC Literature. Also, I would love to see a collab episode (or series) between the two. Go through a set of narratives in both its written form and its visual form :3
I live in Hong Kong and am a hong konger, but had never heard of this film (being so Canadian as to have given up on local films) until this video. going to watch it asap now - thank you so much for this, and for reconnecting me with a part of my identity
I recently watched the "sequel" 2046, and as much as everybody raves about In The Mood For Love, you don't realize the impact it had until you watch 2046. 2046 is kind of like a sequel, it's Mr. Chow and brief flashback to Mrs. Chen, but it's hard to say that it's the same Mr. Chow that we met in ITMFL. 2046 feels like it's a sequel to the audience's take-away from ITMFL, but not necessarily an in-universe sequel to the people we knew in the preceding movie.
The pacing of this video is too fast, like rapid-fire. It's hard to appreciate your points when there are so many coming at the viewer in such rapid succession. I love film criticism and would like to see more of your videos, but I think more quality and less quantity would be a better approach.
Have seen Wong Kar-wai's "Chungking Express" and "In the Mood for Love". It hurt to watch "In the Mood for Love". So beautiful and sad. Tony Leung Chiu Wai was fabulous as always.
Holy smokes - did anyone else notice that the map at about 7:15 implies that Taiwan is part of People's Republic of China, instead of a separate country? Doesn't seem like a likely accident, does it?
Please do an analysis of Capernaum!!! It won the jury's award at Cannes for Best Film. It should have been nominated for Best Film at the Oscar's and won, but there are politics at play.
To help people with non-linear storytelling; I tell people it is kind like a soap opera, which is very hard to follow until you get used to the jumping around.
When I first watched this film I find it quite boring and felt detached as a viewer from the characters'. The cinematography was stunning but that's all for me. They don't have much dialogues so you don't know the characters and therefore don';t care about them. Afterwards I realized how highly praised this film was. I watched a bunch of film critic essay videos and I guess I can appreciate the film more than before. But it remains a boring, dreadful movie to me that doens't move me much. Filming technique and artfulness does not make a film great. It is about the story and how well it is told. Maybe I don't have a heart, but I just can't come to like this movie as much as most people does.
akiheavenly6 it’s ok if you don’t like it. Art is subjective and everyone has different sensibilities. The world would be so boring if we all liked the same thing (I know it’s cliche lol). What kind of films have you enjoyed watching?
I know it's an anime, but could you guys do an analysis of "Your Name" or, "Kimi no na wa"? I would love an in-depth look at its cinematography and cultural background!
The scene towards the end where he buries his secret in a tree in the wall of a Cambodian temple, that was just devastating and yet so beautiful and unforgettable.
“They’re more comfortable loving the imagine version of each other rather than what is real...” -took me a long time to learn that and still learning.
I'm reading A Layman's guide to Psychiatry and psychoanalysis and and the first chapters discuss this Images that we have in our minds about reality ( our own reality ) and reality itself and it totally makes sense haha now i see relationships and aspects of life from a totally different angle .

nice comment
Sayak Choudhury Nice
Like "Call Me By Your Name"?
Yes, 2046 kind of confirms this.
exactly. I also feel like that.
Watching Wong Kar wais movies is like walking through memories you have never experienced . I watched Chung King Express and Fallen angels and they have like created a void in my heart and have sat there and they refuse to leave . But now I'm going to force myself to watch in the mood for love .
you should watch happy together. that one is my favourite work from him
This movie is one of the most beautiful films that I’ve ever seen. Tony Leung is absolutely amazing in it, totally captivating. I hope this video moves a lot of people to go and find it.
It certainly looks interesting, and having watched this video and read your comment I'm definitely going to check it out now. Thanks for this, all of you! :)
A phenomenal movie. It just aches with understatement.
@@tammysilverwolf1085 Have you seen it?
Wong Kar-Wai is a poet.
I remember when we discussed this film after watching it in one of my film classes. Only in Asia where a simple glance of someone walking down a corridor be an expression of love
Thank god for that.
I've seen this thanks to Nerdwriter & Every Frame a Painting. What a beautiful film
Nkanyiso Innocent Khwane same!
You should lookup cinefix here on TH-cam. They are an amazing channel for film buffs.
Me too!
Nkanyiso Innocent Khwane For me it was Cinefix
same same same same same
Chungking Express is the other movie that I began to watch without knowing what I was in to. That and In The Mood for Love will always be treasured.
Interesting reading about the protagonists loving the imagined versions of each other considering what happens in the events of the movie's sequel 2046.
I read this as "2049" as was like "Wow, replicants have really come a long way emotionally..."
same 😂
It fits 100% even without watching 2046.
ITMFL is such a beautiful film, rewatched it about 5 times, there's just something so captivating about wkw's films ahhhhh
I never get tired of watching this movie. Thanks

Bryan Ferry is my jam
Omg i have a midterm surrounding this movie in like a week, thanks
Caroline Therrien Good luck.
Caroline Therrien check out Nerd writer's video as well
Caroline i have it tomorrow XD

In a deleted scene, in the hotel they had intercourse. I think it was best to keep the film about chastity nonetheless.

Please do on Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky) (1979).
"plays Yumeji's Theme in the background"
One of my fav film
Xtell Sirfalas hello
Was super lucky to see it in Cinema form for the first time last night and let me tell you it was amazing.
I had the pleasure of watching this film n a 35mm film print in University, and it instantly became my favourite of all time.
Christopher Doyle's cinematography is simply amazing. Wang Kar Wei and Christopher Doyle are the Bill Belichick and Tom Brady of film making.
I hope they do multiple seasons of Crash Course Film Criticism, just like how they do CC Literature.
Also, I would love to see a collab episode (or series) between the two. Go through a set of narratives in both its written form and its visual form :3
Rewatched this just two days ago. It's really a beautiful film, there's no better word to describe it.
Tony Leung is one of the greatest Chinese actors of the past century!
The thumbnail illustration of Tony laying his head on Maggie's thighs looks very much like the main part of another poignant film "Lust, Caution".
I live in Hong Kong and am a hong konger, but had never heard of this film (being so Canadian as to have given up on local films) until this video. going to watch it asap now - thank you so much for this, and for reconnecting me with a part of my identity

Full disclosure, I haven’t watched the video yet but I’m just excited that crash course is doing film like, pretty overjoyed
Wong Kar-wai is one of my favorite filmmaker as a Chinese. The explanation is great.
Glad to see this movie is getting the recognition it deserves
Quality video, quality channel
Wow, these lessons are impecable. Thanks teaching us about Chinese romantic films, Michael

I've just finished watching this film, and it's beautiful.
Jeez what is this? My favourite movie and the best educational channel on YT? Even my brithdays ain't this good to me
Super big fan of wkw. This is one of my favorite films of all time.
Michael Aranda is awesome!
Have seen Wong Kar-wai's "Chungking Express" and "In the Mood for Love". It hurt to watch "In the Mood for Love". So beautiful and sad. Tony Leung Chiu Wai was fabulous as always.
If you have not seen "Ashes of Time", make sure you do! It is stunning!
MadriFilmArt Noted. Thanks!
Wong kar wai is such a legend
Watching Wong Car Wai's feels like having a Deja Vu that you never even experience before
I never watched this before and I guess I just spoiled it for myself, but I still wanna watch it.
I absolutely love ITMFL, it’s one of my all-time favourite films and arguably WKW’s best film.
Beautiful film! Am I the only one who got Mad Men vibes in this film?
My favourite movie of all time. Easily.
than you so much, your channel is a treasure!
This is one poetic film, an instant classic!
One of my favorite movies. Crash course is such a treat analysing it. Thank you
"bill and ted's excellent adventure" y'all quit lmao oml
Seen this film many years ago. Pleasant time.
This might be up there with the films of Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, and Ozu.
Holy smokes - did anyone else notice that the map at about 7:15 implies that Taiwan is part of People's Republic of China, instead of a separate country? Doesn't seem like a likely accident, does it?

Could you do a follow-up video about the links and context of how this film relates to "Days of Being Wild" and "2046"?
Man, excelent video, great explanation of all the topics and possible readings", great work.
Very concise analysis. Wish I had found this channel sooner.
Wong Kar-wai is one of my fave filmmakers and in the mood for love's is my 3rd fave from him 😍
This is my favourite movie of all time.
This is one of my favorite films!! Its all about Wong Kai Wai !!
He's one of my favorite filmmakers.
To help people with non-linear storytelling; I tell people it is kind like a soap opera, which is very hard to follow until you get used to the jumping around.
Thank you for mentioning Casablanca. Hard to do film criticism m without it.
Great analysis
This criticism of this movie; analysis, makes me want to watch the movie. Thanks guys! 🎥
Loving the film episodes!!!! Keep up the great work!
Today is Wong Kar-Wai's birthday. COOL!
Nice work Michael. My compliments to the team as well.
“This is just a rehearsal”
Shout out from Hong Kong!
great episode as always!
Can’t be the only one who saw his thumb disappear behind the green screen at 7:55
Awesome video!
But that map was very painful to watch, LOL (Lantau Island is wedged inside the mainland, haha)
Hong Konger over here.
I'm want really really hard one of these criticism episodes to be about uncle bonmee
Would love to see you talk about Eternal Sunshine In The Spotless Mind
there are some romance movies that end on a sad note though and not a happy note.

Then I went to see 2046 and whoa! Maaad... in a good way.
I know it's an anime, but could you guys do an analysis of "Your Name" or, "Kimi no na wa"? I would love an in-depth look at its cinematography and cultural background!
Mistook brief encounter for close encounter which may or may not also fit on this list lol I’d like to think it does.
You're doing God's work. I just can't thank you enough for this
This is my favorite romance film
please do eyes wide shut! or all of kubrick's filmography for that matter
I love this film. So glad u chose it :)
You gotta put some Mike Leigh films in dis piece!
OMGOSH HE'S ON SCI SHOW TWO MY TWO FAVORITE CHANNELS ARE SO CLOSE TOGETHER
BEST WONG KAR WAI FILM !!!
Ashes of time is the best Wong Kar Wei in my opinion
You guys should do one on Tarkovsky or Béla Tarr
We thought about doing Stalker or Solaris but didn't find a way for them to fit with everything we were trying to accomplish in this series.
- Nick J.
Daniel Nuñez hiii
