How things have changed. I came home from the navy in 1980 after spending six months off the coast of Iran. I was on the self defense force and had grenades and a M14. I found a nice looking Ruger Blackhawk with gun belt. Had to go to the sheriff for a permit but that was a problem. I was a petty officer, carried a weapon in a war zone but I was a few days shy of 21. My dad went with me and filled out the form. I gave the sheriff the money and he handed me the permit and said happy birthday. That was savannah missouri.

AR-15's come in all different types. The older style with fixed front sights and flat top in rear have gave way to free floated handguard with just gas block and no front sight. So manufactures such as Smith and Wesson have went from M&P Sport 2 to a Sport 3 free float handguard. So people will return one model for another. Or trade up to higher priced AR's that they always wanted to try out. The market is flooded with AR-15's right now. What we need in this country is more firearm ranges for people to shoot at and get better at their marksmanship.

Hey pal! (I think we've spoken before on YT). I'll draw an analogy to musical instruments (in my case a drum set). A guy I was working with decades ago was a bass player. I was leaving the job and relocating to the East Coast from Chicago. He asked me if I was selling my drums before the move (I had only bought them a year or so before, so the thought of selling them had never even crossed my mind). I said "no way", and his reply has stuck with me all these years:
"Good! Keep them. Because you'll never have the money to buy a new set."
And if it's not the money, then it'll be a lack of time, or not being able to find what you're looking for, or some other life-related reason getting in the way.

I live in the UK. My Great Grandfather came home on leave with his rifle over his shoulder in WW1, my Grandfather in WW2 little different, my Dad had a shotgun no issue, my mother used to go shooting with it slung over her back on a motorbike! I was a cadet shooting full bore rifles at 13. By the time I was 20 and in the RAF I had a civvy copper asking if our station armoury was a secure place to keep a shotgun to get my licence!!
I gave it up after the mass shootings we had in the early 1990's as I did not have a gun at the time and its renewal was money and time I could not spare! Now, they would not let me have one as I have made FAR TOO MANY posts questioning authority, a written constitution here and in favour of your Second Amendment there! Remember, "Registration ALWAYS leads to Confiscation!"

I shot AR-15's before I let my friends talk me into buying one. To be honest I don't like them I would much rather have a bolt gun. That said the AR I had shot just fine there were no problems with it overall for the amount of rounds I fired through it. For those who want to know I chose a PSA 15. At 150 yards it had good accuracy (2.0 in. groups) only had one problem one time and that was failure to go into battery, so I had to push the bolt into place. That was it, problem was as I stated I just don't like the platform they are first and foremost ugly but admittedly utilitarian just like a Glock except an AR is much more reliable than a Glock. Hell for that matter the ugliest kid on the gun block the High-Point is more reliable than a Glock for that matter. So far of all the guns I have owned the I don't regret trading in the AR but in a weird way I think I should have kept it no matter how I felt about it. As far as the three Glocks I have owned I am definitely glad they are gone. Just for the fun of it what is/was your favorite rifle? For me it is my Enfield in 303 British AKA my deer rifle.
Edit was for a grammar error.

If you're constantly running in circles to cash in guns and then re-buy them, you're making foolish financial decisions.
Unless you're in the high end collectors market, know what you're doing and rich, guns are not an investment. They don't hold their value. It's like any other consumer product. You pay retail, the second you walk away from the cash register, you take massive depreciation. Anyone you try to re-sell it to is going to offer 30-70% less. That's just how it works. There are rare exceptions like if you managed to snag something in hot demand on back order, but for the most part, you take a big loss. If you sell it to a gun store, you're going to get the smallest fraction of original value and when you buy it back, you'll pay full retail or very close.
If you're on this treadmill, it means you're buying too damn many guns for your budget. It's as simple as that. When you get lots of OT at work or "covid stimulus checks" or your uncle croaks and leaves you some money, don't run out and convert it all into guns and ammo. There's no advantage to having 57 guns. You can't shoot but one at a time, or two if you like wasting ammo and looking all Hollywood. Get one for each role that truly makes sense, and lay in some spare parts. Do you really need six differently accessorized guns for your truck, you ATV, your cabin, your kayak and your third favorite outhouse on the back 40? Probably not.
Take your extra money and sock it away for the inevitable rainy day - inflation, loss of a job, a health setback, a tree falling on your house etc. Sh*t happens. Always.

Its like taking an old silver dollar to the pawn shop. Face value is a buck. Spot Wall Streeet price is 31/oz. If your selling it the return is about $10, and the seller's asking price to the buying customerwill be in the high 20s. But most enthusiasts will have more than 1 coin, or firearm. Guns are like clothes, we have more than one shirt or pair of footwear for different occassions.

@@kenofken9458 It certainly is common sense. As in attire there are those owning fine garments never worn and since grown out of besides the style changing. And in firearms there are those who have a trusty few, others with enough to go into business with many new in the box unfired in vaults, and some who must have the newest and latest iteration of what the elite military and law enforcement is using or even just evaluating. @@theoriginalDAL357 ArmaLite developed the rifle and helped with the cartridge, but most of the cartridge work was completed by Remington.
For the record, this was done totally outside the military’s purview.
In this new cartridge, they used a specific power, the IMR 4475-an extruded or “stick” powder made by Du Pont and sold to Remington.
However, the U.S. military had a “sole-source” contract (zero chance for corruption there…) for gunpowder with Olin Mathieson, who exclusively manufactured the ball-shaped WC 846 powder for the military.
      ball vs stick powder
For simplicity sake, let’s just call them the stick powder and the ball powder.
And just so that it’s easy to remember: stick powder = good, ball powder = bad.
Sticks And Stones And Bullets May Break Your Bones
Gunpowder is gunpowder, right? No, not at all. Different powder burns differently.
Some burns faster, some slower, some are resistant to temperature, and some aren’t. Basically, there’s a lot of science that goes into gunpowder.
Stoner and ArmaLite designed the M16 to be used with stick powder. The rifle was even tuned (size and placement of the gas port, BCG weight, strength of the parts, tension of the buffer spring, etc.) for stick powder.
Ammunition made with the correct stick powder (manufactured by Remington) was utilized by various forces in the early days of Vietnam, including the ARVN, Green Berets, and the 7th Cavalry in the Battle of Ia Drang.
Stick powder worked. But… why did ball powder not work? ( Taken from Pew Pew Tactical, How and Why the M16 failed in Vietnam)
