Last year's collaboration between St. Vincent (Annie Clarke) and David Bryne was surprising on many levels. The album they wrote and recorded together, Love This Giant, is inspired and artful, if not as immediately accessible as some of the solo work each of them has made in the past. On stage, performed live at the Strathmore music hall in Bethesda, MD, the songs found their heart and soul. A band of brilliant brass players made the tunes swing a lot more than they do on the record.
Love This Giant allowed both Byrne and Clark to make songs that were slightly out of their comfort zones; they dug into less familiar territory and found something fresh. When performed live, new songs such as "Who" and "I Am an Ape" sound powerful. But old favorites also surfaced from their solo catalogs, whether it was Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House" or the Byrne-Eno collaboration "Strange Overtones," or St. Vincent performing "Marrow" from her 2009 album Actor.
All of these performances became less about nostalgia or their individual fame, and more about creation and building on something great, from a pair of strong creative souls born 30 years apart.
As you watch the performance, keep an eye out for Kelly Pratt, formerly of the band Beirut, on lead horn, as well as fantastic synchronized dancing choreographed by Annie-B Parson. You can also see Byrne and Clark rehearse for the concert in this special video from our In Practice series.--BOB BOILEN

I love the way St. Vincent dances with those adorable little steps shuffling around.
Me to. Cooler than a penguins pantry.
I concur.
She is a problem. Worse than Steve Howe!
I also appriciated this particular adorable thing, but the whole concert is a blast! talking heads updated and revenant!
In addition to her many talents, she is very funny.
It is not only David and Annie, it is also this brass band that makes this consert so superbe. The way they orchestrate and dance to their own rhythm is just wonderful. As if words and melody and orchestration is a complete unit.
Apparently Annie wrote all the horn parts too
@@roddheino If so, she is a genious
U bet!
But you wouldn't have any of that without Talking Heads , (and suit that he's grown in to).
The whole show was choreographed by Annie-B Parson.
All the time, whatever she's doing, Annie Clark just KILLS it. She murdered this concert with her guitar. I'm in love.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
ME TOO.
I love /adore DB
I'm new to AC.. But I'm just blown away with every new discovery. This collaboration is incredible! And this performance is.. something I wish I could go back in time to see
@@vickiperreault6527I'm with you!
that guy dancing during Burnin' Down the House is my spirit animal
David Byrne singing along to St Vincent's Marrow is living rent-free in my head!!!!
Holy shit, thsi version of Marrow is a whole new level
wow that is the same thing i was gonna put. fucking hell i almost cried. so epic
My favorite to this day
Yeah, it banged so hard that I vomited out of jealousy.
Yeah don’t think she’s ever matched this version
This is not a simply performance.
This is a kaleidoscope of poetry.
Couldn't have said it better myself. 👌
They really do deserve each other.
More like, America deserves to see such soulful types as them and their ethnicity together, and no Hollywood scandal. She´s his soul daughter, America. That "mysterious" and vital spiritual dimension. Skirting America´s addicted twisted, and offering virtual redemption.
This performance of "I Should Watch TV" is on a whole other plane of existence.
+veritaseros Agree. He was in the zone!!
For gods sake don't listen to it with a good headphone and amp combo.
YES
Great concert concept! I was already an Annie Clark and Byrne fan, but this was unexpected. The horns and choreography made the show.
This mix on this is fantastic. Listening on headphones, and everything has so much clarity without one thing overpowering the rest.
It's that sound engineer. He may not be on the stage.Presence is felt. Love to all the Heads .just wandering along to somewhere.....
Great mix indeed, wondering how there wasnt feedback issues when she was in between the line of horn players on either side of her; the engineer knows his stuff!
Every time I hear anything from Byrne it sounds really really good, the man does know his sound engineers
Holy shit. This is some kind of radical, innovative stuff. Hard to find a melody line, dissonant, just perfect for this millenium. Wow.
I am talking about Who, btw.
David Byrne is perhaps one of the two hippest people to ever inhabit this blue ball of a planet. And, while the other David will always be a music God loved by me and most, this David, I think, makes even more interesting and challenging music. Bless both David B.s
One of the finest performances, and video recordings, I've seen in a long time. Many thanks to NPR for making this available here in HD, and to the song writers and performers who created this delightful music. Nothing better, friends and neighbors.
Yes indeed. I am nearly speechless. Blows me away. Greatest stuff I have heard for years … wow!
Please, one more show. The world needs this so much, right now.
This is one of those uneskipable concerts out there in the wild of TH-cam. Start to finish, just perfection.
Affirmation of life. Beautiful.
Music like this can save your life. Both of these performers are astonishingly talented, and they're a good fit. Annie Clark can hold her own with anybody. My goodness.
THANKS A LOT SUR TOUT BEAUCOUP MY BEST FRIEND OF ROCK MUSIC FOREVER AND ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!
as a band person...... david byrne and st vincent.... you have my outmost respect
She has the best stage presents I think in my life !!!She commands the stage so well!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Perfect pairing. Similar sensibilities. That groove in Marrow is so gangster.
Simply wonderful. I have watched this many times over the years.
This is the 7th time i've watched this video in 15 days, it's beautiful
OH MY EFFING WORD!!! MARROW! Annie Clark got the H.E.L.P. she never knew she needed! Or maybe she did know if she wrote the brass part as well. Omg so so good!
Stooop being so good. You're making the rest of us look like smchucks.
You should write a short story about this
Easily one of the coolest performances ever.
this concert makes me so happy everytime i watch it
St. Vincent is just.....wow!
This is easily one of my favorite performances, ever.
Wonderful "Strange overtones"! What a great song!
I want to put this up on a big screen and just dance. Man I miss live music. Love Annie's energy and David's suspenders!
saw the show last night (6/28/2013) at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank NJ with my 16 year old daughter who grew up with DB/TH music. The show was unreal, the singing, the choreography, the horn section...when a 16 year old tells you that this is f*cking cool show, I know I did the right thing as a Dad. St. Vincent can wail on that ax!!! Live music always brings a tear to my eye and I'm glad I brought tissues!!!!
Thy guy dancing to Burning Down the House is so great! Music should move you and you should move how you feel!❤
Two such talented people, great band, great songs. Bliss
Oh Wow! Vaudeville from the Twilight Zone, complete with the Timothy Leary Existential Marching Band.
Byrne has truly outdone himself! I am awestruck by every aspect of this concert - the instrumentation, choreography, lyrics, staging, and musicianship. This is the most original performance I've experienced in a long, long, time, and, contrary to many other experimental ventures, very warm in spirit.
Color me stunned!!
You nailed it! Byrne is the only rock star to not only age with grace and dignity, but to continue exploring and moving forward.
Terry Barham Thanks for your comment!
Wagmore Barkless Well stated ! great as he ever was !
Wagmore Barkless I wish I'd been there !!! Finally, a concert worth going to!!! Enjoyable in every aspect!!
+Wagmore Barkless This is VERY MUCH a collaboration; Half the songs are Annie's... the orchestration is hers!! The Marching band is hers! Byrne is the tag-along!
absolute jewel...this video, David, St Vincent, all the musicians...THANKS!
I wanted to hit the like button after each song... wish that was a thing, I can't like this enough.
I Should Watch TV is one of the coolest songs I've heard in some time. LOVE the dissonant bass underneath the horns. Such a cool song...
Hard to believe the whole place didn't burst into flames from they sheer heat of this.
One of the most outrageous performances I've ever experienced. Spectacular in every way. Bravo very good....
These two are perfect together; an incredible combination!
Truly one of the greatest collaborations ever!
the audience member at 33:46 is EPIC.
Epic moves 💯
Epically annoying for everyone within 100 feet of him. They went to watch the show. Not him gallooping all over the place.
Total LEGEND!
Love this approach to making music.....will add to my favorites!!!!!!
My face hurts from grinning! Cannot believe there were empty seats! Ahhh! What a brilliant set! Can't stop with the exclamation marks!!!! AHHHHHH!
I've seen them on french tv (full concert) what a great and refreshing moment ! originality, virtuosity . A smile on my face during all the concert
Glad I'm not the only Charlottean watching this to relive last night! We were blown away -- what a show!!
Another awesom white hair musician!! Forefather of the genre..and the mixes of them all!!
damn i love this version of "Lightning" !! so much attitude.
This is one of my most favorite things ever.
the guy at 33:46 is my favorite person alive.
***** The one who commands our attention with his impeccable dance skills.
That dude has it goin' on
Kyle Muldoon Damned hipsters dancers and your gracious movements.
Mush Room graceful*
A Small Babby Right, Thank you! English is not my native language and I have a lot to learn.
The best! Wish I could have been there.
Now that's what I call a brass band. Superb.
People now I am just amazed by both of these two wonderful Artists in their own right ,but together there music is outstanding . and to think i had not seen them together till now is a personal failure .A BIG THANK YOU TO TH-cam for keeping this alive .. out ... P.S. and a big shout out to the band ,just an amazingly well done by all ................
i feel the need to comment on this every time i watch it. I watch it four or five times a week, so i don't. If i did i'd just say WOW.
Such an amazing work of art. A celebration of sound and movement. I so wish i were in the audience. The closest i feel i've been i think, is seeing Ron and Russell Mael "Sparks" live......repeatedly of coarse...........
Annie, you have a unique sound coming out of your guitar, and seeing you blast out some Dimebag riffs, dimebag and jimi would be proud....
I was already a St Vincent fan from los ageless, so when I recently started listening to the talking heads I was dumbfounded to find this collab.
Holy moly! Brilliant arrangement of Marrow!
lesss than 40 minutes but so AWESOME to see my old ideal and the muze for this band.
I saw this duo at Bonnaroo this past summer. They played one of the best shows I'd ever seen.
Heaven on Earth or Stage!! 👌👏👌👏👏
The Forest Awakes is such a great song, my personal favorite from LTG
Gotta agree with you- was at the same show. Dancing in the aisle, house right. Genius.
This is highly addictive, I love it, especially the second song, strange overtones! What a masterpiece!
This is SOOOOO good. Annie and David are genius musicians.
Thats got to be the best version of Marrow I've ever heard!
my mind is blown I wish I could have been there.
These heads are talkin' to me, please, this was a smokin' hot show...
Thank you David & Co.
And thanx NPR (!) (Always a great place to play)
cheers

They are a perfect pairing of musicians
Magnific performance of Strange Overtones!
David Byrne is a legend. Annie will be, the next, legend*

Just brilliant.
Pure genius. 💙💙💙💙
Sheer entertainment. Awesome mixture of instrumentation and vocals.

This performance is sheer bliss!! I can die happy now.
WOW!!! What a great and wonderful performance - an exorbitant high level of music-art ..! I love it ...!!! Keep on rollin' - Love & Peace on earth ...!!!
my absolute favorite group I am for sure loving this giant
I like this, especially the combination with brass blowers, and tuba as bass fits excellently
strange overtones......song of my life!
What a brilliant concert. Great versions of some fabulous tracks too. LOVING that brass section!
Two of my all time favorite artists working together = absolute perfection!
Ok, I just discovered Who from watching TV and this is a glorious performance. WOW
Wow, this is brilliant!
Fantastically talented.
David byrne es indudablemente un genio, y st Vincent es muy talentosa, gracias por subir esta música que nos recuerda el valor de lo básico.
Outstanding.
Wow.... it truly all came together at this performance.... better than the album, and far better than the performance at the Ryman Auditorium. They really should release this as "Love This Giant - Live !" with the caliber of not only these performances, but with this level of recording and mixing. Even a DVD/CD set would be a huge seller, I believe, as this is just such an awesome production, recording, and historical event.... just the highest level of professionalism on this occasion on the part of everyone involved.... a totally awesome performance, recording, and collaboration in every way...! Definitely 5 Golden Discs for this one....
there is a Brass Tactics EP that is live performances
Hope these two will keep going together for a while. Love this couple.
