great channel, so glad i found it. i do transmissions and recently added shop aprons to my kit. dont know why it took me so long to come back to them. i ran CNC from high school till i was 42. give em a try. all the extra pockets for machinist rule, pen light etc
You are one of the few I've seen using a speed wrench. I grew up using them and when I worked on vehicles others would give me theirs because they didn't like them I had quite a collection before my tools got stolen. They're great for quickly running down nuts and bolts and being able to feel the thread with out over torquing
Spark plugs! I used a 36" Snap-On speed handle, during my 17 years with FoMoCo, doing tune-ups. Made quick work of a plug change. Still a very handy tool in box. Although my 3/8 Snap-On cordless impact does the chore now...can't beat the new Li batteries.
Great vid!!! Always love seeing a ls go together and you do great work and love that you are passing on knowledge to us all !!!! I honestly have a tool set that does have the plate for the front and back cover but with that set it came with 2 different size machined like plugs that you put on the covers (front and back) that center them perfectly. I don’t use the flat plate in the kit because like you said it’s about centering on the crank.
Hey Daniel, Tim here, i'm back home, hope to grab them Small shirts tomorow, GREAT vid, watched the whole thing, even tho i'm an NA Pontiac dude......once again, ur attention to detail, and showing where u can just go, was AWESOME!!...will be in touch.....TY Sir!!
Great video. I have only stumbled on your channel recently and love it. I have only done a couple LS based engines so far and it’s nice to learn so tips when assembling them.
Love the series on facebook 5.3L . love the "myth" busting you did on the oil pump centering. Love that straight to the point AND you explain that point...doing a 6.0 LQ4 myself, learning alot from your channel Thanks @powellmachineinc3179.
Thanks for the information on the lifter valley plugs. I wonder why that is a concern from people and widely discussed. Any comment on removing the oil pressure relief valve on the 6.0 DOD oil pans?
So you get boxes/bags of chit.... lol, gotta love that & I've seen this sign in shops that tells you the labor rates per hour but then they give you the Rates if you worked on it first. Now I know why that sign is there although I've seen it as a joke type of Framed Art. Some folks think they can do the job & save themselves some money but it never works out like that? There's something oddly satisfying about seeing a craftsman doing his craft...... peace & GB
Daniel, would the timing set benefit from oiling through the thrust plate? Similar to drilling the pipe plug in a SBC. Everything behind the front cover always seems "dry". The splash oiling must be enough to keep things from seizing, but the broken tensioner, dried oil build up, and stretched chains make me wonder if a little pressured oil wouldn't keep components cooler, decrease fatigue, and decrease failure of the tensioner. 🤷♂️ Ah, is it even possible without a negative side effect?
Great tip on front & rear cover below flush alignments. I'm about to switch out a 5.3 reman myself and the Internet mostly guides you to the covers must be flush with the deck. I would have followed that too, until watching this. Thx
Top notch work as always 👌 you guys are my new source of engine parts. Curious if you use the wedge style timing tensioner when you retain the vvt? I have always gone against my gut on the vvt engines and put a new oem style setup on it.
Doing my first LS build. It’s a Gen 3 and the timing chain guide I ordered has the wrong bolt spacing for my block. Did they not come with dampers? Mine measures about 2.1” center to center. The one I ordered from RA measures narrower
Thankyou Dan for such an informative video. I have really learned a lot about the LS series engines from you; your information stops a lot of the "internet know it all" people who probably have never seen an LS. Have you had time to work on nightmare?
WTA 37 bearing is the proper bearing for the plugs. I already used them. I understand your point with rebuilding it after wards. I made a video for my grandkids. I don't trust the orings not ro leaks after so many miles. I've seen oil pressure issues with them. But there are problems either way huh? ROFLMFAO
Im hopefully not asking a already answered questions but here goes scan you you stroke a 5.3 for epa rules still using the same engine with more torque and hp for everyday use.
You need to turn the camshaft by itself to check for ease of rotation before installing the chain. You will never feel a slight bind turning by the crank bolt. And the front and rear covers are aligned without the seal installed. A centering tool is installed to ensure the seal is centered to the crankshaft. Sloppy build at best.
Obvious you skipped an empty bolt hole on the pan. Maybe just searching for comments but it ruined something. Your work is meticulous and much respected. May the horsepower keep being produced by you.
He's built a motor or two more than me. He will have a reason for that empty bolt hole which no doubt he will mention in the next video. Also notice that Andrew knows every next step/bolt you are going to do/fit. Also see him holding the motor steady which you are tightening bolts. He is learning every quickly and I can see he has already learnt a lot. One thing I can see you both are NOT a GP. Does not stand for General Practitioner (doctor) but for GP for "gorilla paws", people who tighten bolts and nuts to ridiculous levels, not understanding that a small dia bolt holds a small item and is torqued to a small spec. They tighten everything to same (overtightened) spec and then I have to come in and fix things. Well done Andrew. Dad is also a good teacher. For dad, when are we going to see Andrew assembling something? Take care all of you, including the missus. Regards from Australia.
hi maybe you can help me out i bought double roller chain for a ls-1, why is there two sets of timming marks on lower can gear? its a speedmaster cam set i called speedmaster 3 times they suck no answer, i dont know if you had this problem thanks

I agree with you on the cork gasket thing. I used to build 2 engines a day 5 days a week. So I got good at not having oil leaks from the pan.
Definitely
Caught yourself putting that oil pump housing on upside down there for a minute, that would of been awkward. lol Great Job.
@swissskier03 well..... it happens I guess
When the man said "GM run it down the line and never shimmed it" I actually stood up and clapped.

Had to center front cover seal on early Rat motors same way.
First time I've seen an LS put together little bit different than doing an old stock block but pretty awesome thanks buddy

Possible,
I've noticed a 58x reluctor and 4x cam gear, but no cam position sensor provision in the timing cover. Am I missing something here?
Yep, told the guy it was wrong, he said it was correct, I said...you find out shortly 🙄
Nice production, sir!
Much appreciated!
Makes me want to start on my old LM4 engine.

is the square plate on the bottom of the oil pan for sound deadening?
Excellent...

@@powellmachineinc i know you guys are slammed! I got a pile of heads and engines ready to come down
Is an LS cam hollow or just the snout ???
The factory cam and many aftermarket cam cores are core drilled, we do have sum 8660and8620 cores that are not drilled
@@powellmachineinc I have no experience with the LS platform I did do a bit on Race engines in the seventies.
Doesn’t the oil pan need to align to the back of the block since the transmission bolts to the block and pan?
Yes, but nobody puts them in....
@@powellmachineinc I did not understand that reply.
I think I understand, I think you are saying nobody uses the transmission to oil pan bolts.

The hole isn't in the block,
Pay attention, he explained it in the video.
I'm surprised GM didn't design the pickup with a couple of little feet at the bottom to prevent it from bottoming out and disrupting the flow.
It's pretty rigid and has plenty of clearance
Anchored at 3 points: left, right, and at pump end. Except welds break, it won't go anywhere. View at 34:50 shows it all.
hi maybe you can help me out i bought double roller chain for a ls-1, why is there two sets of timming marks on lower can gear? its a speedmaster cam set i called speedmaster 3 times they suck no answer, i dont know if you had this problem thanks
#1 a double roller hits everything, it's a nightmare, you need a single billet
#2 speedmaster....wouldn't put that garbage in my lawnmower
What is the cause for some LS engines to have low oil pressure. Some say it is the pickup tube o ring? What are your thoughts?
Can be, oring, but often it's excessive bearing clearance
Thanks for the response and it's good you have never witnessed low oil pressure after rebuild. I have seen lots of post people having low oil pressure on low milage LS.
BTW my 2002 SS Camaro has 60,000 miles on engine and oil pressure is about 35psi😢.
Did the barbell/dumbbell go in or did I miss it?
in the bearing episode

The dampers don't give trouble

Why? It works perfectly and gets calibration every year.
