    But she didn't mention the high rents there. I lived in Sydney for 17 years up to 2002, when you could rent city a unit for around $300 per week. Today it's more than double in these areas. Here in Perth, my birth state, rentals and food is far cheaper with much cleaner air. It is why a lot of English move here, including my GP with his young family, for a better lifestyle. I rent a 3 bedroom house with 2 bathrooms a garage and a large lockup shed, today in 2021 for $360 per week, in the hills of Perth, in Kalamunda 20 minutes from the city.

    • @ivanivan5511
      @ivanivan5511 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow that's extremely cheap! But aren't salaries in Perth considerably lower than in Sydney?

      @@ivanivan5511 It's a balance with the cost of living in each city, but wages have come a long way with businesses loosing staff in Perth to the mines. In Perth I am on $32.50ph national rate, driving a yard Tug truck for Scotts Refrigerated. Which is a bit lite on for here. Lately up north in the mines, they are throwing around about $45 to $55 for plant operators. Shit money in Perth would be $26ph downwards. You find a lot of flat rate jobs in transport over here, were if the award is $28, you will at least want $34 flat for 10 hours max. Otherwise you are ripping yourself off. So you go with the deal you want, depending on what you do for a crust.
      As rentals are now less than 1% available on the market, due to mining and Covid. There are reports of up to 50 people turning up to property viewings, competing with offers. So I intend to stay in this house until the shit flicks off the fan. When China starts importing Iron Ore from Africa in a few years.

      @@brycesinclair3479 That's actually very nice! Which such salaries and low rent prices, it makes it easy to save a lot, I guess! I'm from Argentina, I've just been there in Australia, I must say I love the country, it's just perfect! People were welcoming and friendly, high living standards, modernized economy, natural beauty, amazing infrastructure. I've been in the big cities in the east coast, next time I should consider Perth, sounds very nice according what you say. it must be just super peaceful! Anyways, thanks for sharing your experiences and point of views!

      @@ivanivan5511 I have lived in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane between 1985 and 2009, before returning to Perth. And here I stayed. We have always felt isolated from the rest of the country, but today with Covid we have 10 months without community infection with our border shut. Where in the eastern states, they are in and out of lockdowns.
      Depending what you do for a job, can lead to work in mining where you fly up to the mines for 2 weeks work, and fly back to Perth for a week off. Called FIFO work. Fly in, Fly out. You work 12 hour days for 13 days, then either stay at home for 7 days, or take a short 4 day holiday in that time.
      The money is around the same as working 5 days a week in the city, but it is the lifestyle that makes it attractive.

    • @ivanivan5511
      @ivanivan5511 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brycesinclair3479 I'm aware of Perth being so isolated but it must have positives aspects too, I guess there's a strong sense of community there. Also the covid wasn't a big deal, it seems, that's good!
      The "FIFO" sounds good too, you work hard but then you may get motivated thinking "I'll be 7 days off!" haha, pretty nice!
      What about the weather in Perth? Is it good?

    Basic principles of accomodation in Sydney are
    *1. Proximity to public transport.* Train, metro, tram, bus or ferry or bikeways. Unlike UK, public transport is cheap. Sydney's public transport covers a vast area, 125km west, 200 km south west, 160km south, 200km west and 200km north. The maximum fare on the Opal Card which covers this is A$11.20 with a maximum daily fare of A$16.80 M-F, A$8.40 Sat & Sun. With a weekly max of A$50. Off peak travel has a 30% discount. Basically you can say that A$50/£26.40/US$32 will cover your transport costs for the week.
    *2. Time to travel.* People commute from places like Wollongong to the south, The Southern Highlands to the South West ,the Blue Mountains to the West, Central Coast to the North with express train times of up to an hour and a half, usually in comfortable seats and able to do work on journey. The attractive Northern Beaches have an express double decker bus service that takes about an hour to Central Sydney. The dozens of ferry services around the harbour all link up with waiting bus services. the Manly ferry as an example takes less than half an hour with spectacular views en route. The longest ferry, The River Cat goes to Parramatta about an hour west.
    *3. A 1 hour commute* is roughly bounded by Avalon Beach in the North, Sutherland/Cronulla Beach in the South, Campbelltown to the South West and Blacktown/Richmond to the West
    *4. Parking* Is really expensive and difficult. Traffic can be horrendous, which is why there is such an emphasis on public transport.
    *5. Noise is a problem.* Especially in inner and surrounding central Sydney because of traffic and over flights to Sydney Airport on Botany Bay just to the south. Expect to stop conversations every time a jet goes overhead.
    *6. Lifestyle* Good eating, coffee and entertainment are mostly concentrated to the East around the CBD but Sydney has satellite high rise centres at Chatswood, Parramatta, Hurstville, Bankstown and Liverpool which have their own dining and entertainment. Be mindful that in remote suburbs you will still be able to get good restaurants and cafés but the KFCs and Macdonalds generally take over.
    *7. High rise apartments* Are increasingly taking over anywhere near good transport. many come with good facilities in house, like pools, gyms and SOHO/socialising facilities on dedicated floors or in common garden areas.
    *8.. Climate.* Close to the water, and there is a lot of that in the east, is more temperate. The Blue Mountains get extremely cold in winter with some occasional snow. Western Sydney can get extremely hot in summer, up to 45°C

    Having lived in Sydney all my life Darlinghurst used to be associated with Kings Cross the red light district 10-20 years ago and to me still seems similar but as you said it’s more refined nowadays and will probably lose the association with the Cross soon. The North Shore I wouldn’t necessarily say is more Upper class. The Eastern Suburbs has the most expensive real estate in Australia. If anything the North Shore is definitely more conservative and not exciting as the Eastern Suburbs

    • @doubledee9675
      @doubledee9675 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean by North Shore please? We live on the Upper North Shore, which is some distance away from the Harbour but has peaceful suburbs. It is more conservative than the Eastern Suburbs and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd call somewhere like Cremorne or Mosman northern harbourside suburbs rather than North Shore. The North Shore proper starts at Roseville.
