Most of the Hisuian Typhlosions I’ve seen lean further into its existing ferocity, sometimes taking inspiration from a badger shogun character from Japanese lore, so I love that you decided to go in almost the complete opposite direction instead
Not gonna lie. I wasn’t a fan of Hisuian Decidueye at first, but the more they brainstormed ideas, themes, and inspirations, the more it grew on me.
it’s really cool to see the tengu influence! it really isn’t something that looks appealing at first but the concept and idea behind the design made me love it.
I like the ideas behind the design but the finished design looks odd to me

Love Hisuian Typhlosion. Though I wish it’d kept a little more of it’s spike, a little more bristly, I love the mellowed concept. For me it reads as: “Typhlosion found a volcanic region, so the energy that is constantly pent up was able to release into the Earth” almost like Hisuian Typhlosion is in a constant state of catharsis.
That’s such a cool way to rationalize the typing too!!

The Typhlosion's design is so perfect! There's a Japanese story about a rabbit burning a tanuki's back. You know, like how before this Typhlosion there was a fire rabbit starter.
I was looking for this comment! They coincidentally almost recreated the Kachi Kachi Yama story and it fits so well!
It was nice to see the old crew come back for this. I miss the group's brainstorming when it comes to these designs. Out of the three, Samurott has my favorite new form. I was always disappointed with the original design and this feels more in-line with what Dewott should have turned into, in my opinion.
I was gonna write my own comment about this but seriously seeing them all together is amazing. Obviously I love the channel now but I subbed long ago falling in love with a group of artist being dumb and making art :))

@@MJAYMONONOKE I know that the gang are super busy and have their own things going on. Jack and Claire are partners and live together so I think it’s easier for them to continue the two of them, but I like these vids where they can group back up
Honestly, very cool, Typhlosion was my first ever starter Pokémon in soul silver, and seeing this new form makes me happy, and I hope all the starters get something new :)
Tricky, floofy, and stoicism, all are good and these designs are great, you all did an amazing job with this (also I’m glad to see the gang back together)

I really like these. Each one seems to be perfect for every "type" of final evolution people enjoys, those being "cute and big", "quirky" and "badass"

When thinking about regional variants I usually take it from an evolutionary scientific standpoint. Because these are fundamental concepts of evolution. New environment. New stressors etc etc. so I look at the region I want to have this Pokémon move to and look at what is already there that makes sense
Like if I was gonna do shroomish I’d look at the region it’s going to and try to research “what kind of mushrooms already live here” and start there
I think samurott should've been water/rock. That way you've still got the ice, ground, and rock reverse weakness trio, but also get the grass/ice, fire/ground, water/rock 4x super effective weakness trio (fire is x4 against grass/ice, water is x4 against fire/ground, and grass is x4 against water/rock).

@@zettarin also it not weak to rock tis super effective against ground. there's a bit of a reverse super effective circle the fire grass water circle then ground ice rock in the opposite direction. ice is 2x ground, ground is 2x rock, rock is 2x ice. however rock does not resist ice
I was thinking that exact thing after I saw typhlosions type
I think Samurott should be Water/Rock.
That way, each starter's primary type is 4x strong against the next in the cycle.
Also, otters already have an existing relationship to rocks (what they use to bust open clamshells). Dewott could have a rock that resembles and functions as a naturally formed version of some sort of blunt weapon used in the dynasty wars.
Making a canaboo like rock would be awesome.

@@jangaman7823 yeh and it also fits the secondary type cycle where steel is weak to ground but strong against ice, ground is weak to ice but strong against steel and ice is weak to steel but strong against ground

I would've gone for water/fighting, since that hasn't been used often and Empoleon were already water/steel
I've always thought that typhlosion was a boring design, and your take on a variant is brilliant! there's so much character to it.

I think in the game, they're going to stablish the Wott line as coming from Hisui since the Gen 5 starters were designed to feel foreign (Serperior has french motifs, and Emboar, chinese ones). As if they were traded to Unova for the starters program as a symbolic gesture, kinda like the Statue of Liberty.

I do love the brainstorming, but especially with Decidueye I think you forgot to take into account regional variants are usually influenced A LOT by the real life region/people/history that the game is going to be based on. And not just on the surface level, but they usually go in quite deep. Since this game is basically set in ancient Japan (Hokkaido) with its natives, the Ainu people (who historically hunted with bow and arrow and did have an owl kamui as an important deity in their mythology), I was surprised to not really see any of that incorporated.
The Tengu is a very nice idea conceptually for A Pokemon (considering we already have Shiftry), I just don't think it exactly fits THIS particular Pokemon and seems a little far-fetched, if you understand what I mean? It seems less like a concept rooted in history/mythology here and more like something done *solely* for design purposes. It honestly didn't bother me as much with Typhlosion, so I don't know if maybe I'm just biased there?
That being said, I do like the designs overall tho! Typhlosion is super cute! And Samurott is definitely such a step up to its original design!
Your Hisuian Typhlosion honestly looks like a giant Cyndaquil, and I'm all for it. If this were the final evolution I would pick Cyndaquil in a heart beat!
For the Decidueye one I like the concept and the entry for it in the Pokedex, but I'm not in love with the design. If it were a real design I'd have to see it's personality in game since sometimes that can change my outlook on a Pokemon design.
This Samurott looks so cool! I feel like the original design missed a lot of opportunities for not only design but the typing as well.

Honestly I was most happy to just see Nick and Jane again. I remember way back in the day when you did videos for Animal Crossing together that got me to subscribe. Also I can’t help but see Decidueye’s form as just Berdly, which I love.
I would’ve loved to have seen Hisuian Forme Ralts lines. Since Gardevoir can be either sex, they could’ve based their design off of a kabuki performer, with the male/female distinction being something as simple as eye/mouth markings. Gallade could have had samurai-esque basis that could’ve worked with his weird yugioh GX “duel disk is permanently part of my anatomy” anatomy. 😂

I really enjoyed hearing from Nick and Jane again! As for the designs I personally love OG decidueye, but adorable tanuki-phlosion is my jam. And remake Samurott is giving me a serious urge to open up Blender...hmmmm
The new wings for decidueye make me think of a pine tree, that might help for camouflage 👀
Yay! I'm so happy to see Nick and Jane in another video. I also love the varients you all came up with as these are the most unique variant designs I have seen for the starters. Even making samurott another samurai design, you were able to make a unique design of the more samurai variant that I have not seen before. Amazing artwork once again.

During the deisgn and conversation I really thought Disidueye would be Dark type! I think it would be a great switch from the ghost, following the theme of darkness and stealth, and also dark type is considered the "evil type" and mischief!

I think Decidueye, with that long beak changed a little too much for me it feels a little more related to Farfetch'd than the original Decidueye.
By the way, you're definitely showing how much you've improved from the Meowth's design! It's face feels a little bit asymmetric now, but these lasts designs are sick and very much believable!!
@Aidan Pendergast I appreciated that idea too! But, in my opinion, the Facial features of a Pokémon is what makes them recognisable. A Psyduck with a pointy beak doesn't feel like a Psyduck anymore.
I cannot even BEGIN to explain how damn enthusiastic I was when I saw Samurott in the thumbnail- But besides that, listening to the gradual conception of the designs as well as the ideas being traded between all of you guys was incredibly fun! This was fantastic!! ⭐️
Love the Samurott design! He looks fierce and kinda reminds me of Incinaroar. Sometimes the fans designs are better then the actual designs.

I think the return of this kind of loosely edited brainstorming format brings a lot of variety, humour and energy to the channel :)
While it may not be as good a fit for the script to camera videos explaining your own designs/video essay formats on character design it makes natural sense here and I've missed it.

Love these forms and all the growth youve done as an artist over years has really got you to a point where you are nailing these renders. I'm used to traditional so am still shading in greys colour laying over so seeing you and Claire, who have such a good grasp of colour theory makes me jealous, keep up the good work.

I kinda disagree with Decidueye being the hardest because he's "just a guy" when he's literally an archer and could take inspiration from the traditional japanese archer outfits. Give him a hakama and BAM that's Hisuian Decidueye lmao. Not saying I don't like your design, of course, I think it's fantastic and really creative. Tanuki Typhlosion is SO cute.

I think they look cool, but the problem with Decidueye and Typhlosion compared to Samurott is that I can still identify Samurott as a regional form and I can only see the others as entirely new Pokemon. Typhlosion doesn't even look like he's from the same evolution line.
While it isn't the first samurai samurott I've seen, it's by far my favorite execution. Great designs as always, and so glad to see the whole crew together again!

I loved the samurott and Typhlosion! Decidueye was my least favorite design but that’s just my opinion. I think I like a more friendly and approachable starter Pokémon but I get you guys went for a mischievous look. I think the samurott design was a complete upgrade over the original and you guys killed it! I do think it screams fighting type but regardless I think it was a home run. I also loved how Typhlosion looks friendly but could also hold it’s own. I would love to see another video with the OG crew!!

when i first started watching this channel a year and a half ago and i was watching the older (at the time) vids i like how the whole gang were there tossing ideas and jokes and such around ! its nice to see them sometimes even if what the channel generally does now is also very very good

What happened to the beautiful snow owl idea?! '^>^ The Typhlosion regional design is very lovable and by far my favourite! But the section from 14:05 - 14:50 does not visually work. I am not a big fan of humanoid Pokémon, neither do I like Samurott - probably mainly due to it being increadibly slow and weak. You gave Samurott a bipedal stance and a literal sword without even thinking about how he might be able to put it away when not in battle. And the shoulder plates do not look like an integral part of its body, but rather like additional armor which is not what you would want to achieve. I do really wish for a Samurott samurai make-over with katana shaped shell swords and sheath elements on his back. Thanks for feeding my Pokémon Arceus hype! :)

I love all of these, especially Samurott as he's my favorite starter out of the three. Amazing job, glad to see everyone brainstorming pokemon designs again.
Not only did you exponentially improve on both Typhlosion and Samurott's designs (although I was always a huge fan of Decidueye's), but you subverted expectations perfectly. I love how you think of Pokemon not just as creatures, but as characters. It makes ALL the difference in your design approach and it truly shines through here. I'm not a Typhlosion fan whatsoever, but I would adopt that boy in a heartbeat! Seeing such drastic changes makes me want to imagine what other ways existing Pokemon could be seen through different lenses. Thank you so much for this and shoutout to Nick and Jane - it's so good to see them again!

The gang accidentally created the perfect Kachi-Kachi Yama reference in Hisuian Typhlosion. In the tale of Kachi-Kachi Yama, a rabbit tricks a Tanuki into carrying quite a bit of wood on its back, then sets it on fire. The ground typing even references how much later in the story, the Tanuki creates a boat out of mud. You could definitely pull some lore chicanery with a rabbit Pokémon teaching the fearsome Johto Typhlosion humility, “grounding” it and making it bear the burden of chopping and carrying wood to give fire to people or something.
I love the new half of this channels content, but I will always have love for the humble beginnings. Been around for a while now, and I have to say it was nice to see Nick and Jane. Love y’all!

To be completely honest, when you were drawing typhlosion, i thaught the branches on it's back were cigarettes giving it the Fire and Dark/ Poison typing. But when the brainstorming played out i realized they were branches.
The only issue I take with this trio is that Decidueye has a 4x weakness to Fire and Steel, Typhlosion has a 4x Weakness to Water, while Samurott has no 4x weakness- I would have made it water/rock just to even things out with a high grass weakness- while still allowing one to say that its armor has hardened into a rock-like state.
also rock makes more sense with the "ancient japan" aesthetic, just like how kleavor has axes made out of rock and not from steel
Their Decidueye is Grass/Steel, it would only take 4x damage from fire. It would take 1/2 damage from steel.

My favourite is definitely Typhlosian, as you improved it in my opinion
Hisuian Decidueye is equally good as it’s Alolan counterpart, love the typing and the tengu influence
The Samurott is without a doubt my least favourite. It reminds me of Incineroar, plus I adore normal Samurott, so this is a step down in my eyes

I wish they went with a more samurai looking design for the new samurott. I like the new typing a ton but the new form is just the same thing with a different shell color and some spikier bits on him. If they kept the water/dark typing and went with like an old grizzled ronin type design I think it would have been suuuuper cool, instead with just got a shiny with a new type :/

Great designs and great concepts once again! Especially love the Tengu Decidueye. Great to see the gang back together for a bit, seeing the ideas bounce off each other is such a cool thing to see.
So… I prefer the official designs, after waiting to see what was coming along. So, let’s compare what they got.
So the new Decidueye seems to pull from Ronins more than anything, so they got that and the personality wrong, but to be fair, the design was ENTIRELY their own and I respect it. The beak was interesting, the colors popped, and the typing was nice, but sadly underpowered, like regular Decidueye.
With Typhlosion, I love the look they went for… If it was a different Pokémon. The official one keeps the vibe they had in mind though, being a kind, helpful soul. The Tanooki aspects just didn’t work for me sadly, and I much prefer the gorgeous idea of a spirit guide than a random merchant. Volo, as a character, checked that box, and I think that should be considered as well. Either Pokémon should go in tandem with characters, or characters and Pokémon should take up individual roles that the other may not take.
With Samurott… Yeah I prefer this one. The fact that EVERYONE thought Samurott would be more honorable is hilarious to me, because it pulled an Incineroar. I love it. However, this design feels a lot better as a variant, and fits with the other two just a bit better. A bipedal Samurott matches nicely with the official Decidueye and Typhlosion, making them all feel anthropomorphic in a way that shows trainer progress.
I understand it’s unfair to compare a Fakemon to an official design, but I think they made good designs no matter what. I think the only one I PREFER is Samurott, but they are all close to their Hisuian forms in the ways I like them.

It's been great to hear the old gang again. Love the new designs, but I think it would have been cool to have Samurott go for the Seif route, a sea lion holding a sword in it's mouth with a hand moving away or towards the handle to illustrate that they can fight in both traditional and wild style.

I want to cry, because THESE are the Hisuian region starters I want. The ones that have been released for the actual game just make me sad… Jack, James Turner should really hit you up, my man.
I similarly loved Typhlosion as a kid & now realize that it's bad. If they just had its fire collar out all the time, it'd be 1000% improved.

I've really missed Nick and Jane. The way your personalities mesh and the different art styles is what initially drew me to the channel. It was like a second Drawfee.
These forms totally fit within the modern Pokemon world. I'm personally annoyed with Game Freak making all the starters humanoid. For the past three generations the final starter evolutions have all been humanoid.
Your fan designs are so much better than the official ones.
The official ones are so... off. Decidueye only looks good on the art, the 3D model is kinda ugly, Typhlosion doesn't change shit, the concept is good but the fan arts does a better job than the game, it looks more like a Typhlosion OC than an official pokémon. Samurrot is the same as Typhlosion but worse. Because at least Typhlosion has a personality in its design. And the other Hissuian regional forms... I don't even have words to describe it... but Zorua and Zoroak are badass as fuck!
And Dialga and Palkia are pure aberrations, Gamefreak really put the "Freak" on their designs this time.
I loved the format of this video with the gang! While I'm also a huge fan of the highly structured breakdowns, I love having it broken up by just casual chatter of you guys coming up with design inspiration.
I love this return to form with you guys brainstorming together.
