I have to tell you, I bought the Canon R5 and was lucky to get it when it first came out. It was a retirement gift from me to me. I have always wanted a great quality camera and this was it. I am by no means an experienced photographer and have so much to learn. Your videos on my camera have helped me so much. I continue to come back to them for guidance. I can't thank you enough for helping me and giving me such joy in taking photos. I have yet to try the video but that is my next step.

Great tutorial. One minor point: Starting around 32:32 in the video you start talking about Shoot Menu 7, IS (Image Stabilization). In that discussion, you show using a camera with a lens that has the stabilizer switch on the side. If someone were following your video with such a lens (lens with IS) they might be confused because they would NOT see the IS menu item in the menu. When using a lens that has Image Stabilization, the in-camera IS menu item will not be visible. You will only see that menu option when you are using a lens that is a non-IS lens. To see the menu item, either put a non-IS lens on, OR just remove the lens. Then, once you turn IS on in the menu, and reattach any lens, IBIS will remain on regardless of what lens is attached (except certain lenses, such as some cinema lenses, IBIS will not be applied). Just thought I'd mention this in case anyone were to follow along and not know why there were not seeing the IS option in Shoot Menu 7.

Jared - Just discovered reason to use 1.6X crop instead of full... I was in the zoo today and wanted to see how I would do with the R5 and only the 28-70 lens figuring that I had 45M pixels to use if I want to crop. What I found out was the eye tracking does not work all that well when the subjects are small. When I turned on the 1.6X crop, the frame was more full with the subject and therefore the eye tracking worked better. Just a scenario when having a shorter lens than you want (not ideal), it might make sense to use the 1.6X crop to get better focus and a useable picture rather than relying on cropping afterwards to a not in focus picture.

I know this video is approaching 2 and a half years old, but I needed to throw out my thanks for this guide. I absolutely love the fact you use an external recorder to record the menus in your User Guides as opposed to simply recording the back of the camera the way everybody else does. I used your Canon 90D guide when I got my 90D and I just picked up a new R5, so I'm using this guide as I go through the menus on that. Your method/style makes familiarizing myself with the menus "Fro" much easier.

Great video Jared! For the Film Plane Indicator or the Sensor Plane Indicator, it is usually this is used in film production so that focus pullers can mark out exact distances for talent to be from the sensor. For example, if they put a ‘mark’ on the floor 10ft from the Film Plane Indicator, they know that if they set the focus of their manual focus cinema lens to 10ft and the actor “hits their mark”, they will be in perfect focus.

Hey Jared, the mark on the top of the camera to show where the sensor is located is for when you are pulling focus on a high five or nucleus or other ring system off camera from a monitor, you use that mark to determine focus distances. Coming from a 2nd AC I see my 1st use that mark as a measuring point on almost every shoot especially on fs6 and Arri systems

Hi Jared, excellent information as always, thanks for that. The focal plane sign is inherited from old film cameras, especially plate cameras, where to obtain precise focus, the distance between the subject and the focal plane, that is, the film plane, was literally measured with a measuring tape. Today in certain conditions, especially in macro photography it could be useful.

with the line for the sensor mentioned at 16:15 I'm not sure but a lot of cinema cameras have a similar feature as a lot of cine lenses use measurements from this point for focus and you can use this mark to run a tape measure to work out your focus so might be along these lines. i know the C70 has a hook instead of this line for attaching a tape measure.

have had the R5 for a while and found a lot of useful info here, but i think the touch and drag is when the camera is up to your face you can use your finger to drag to select your desired AF point while looking through the viewfinder, here its described as just selecting via the touchscreen.

From what I was told years ago, it has to do with measuring lighting distance to the actual shutter in the camera, and you would put a mark on the floor for either where the actor(s) would go or the where the light(s) should go. In cinema (at least they used to) set the light(s) by measuring from that mark/icon. Again, that’s what I was told years ago, in the ancient days, before digital.

Also useful in cinema for focus pullers as that is where the focus ring measurements are marked from

Made it to the end. While I have no plans on getting the R5 in the near future, I always like watxhing/listening to these Users Guides as a way of learning about features I didn't know these cameras had, or as a way of explaining features on the Canon cameras that I do have. #Igotthisfar

The Sensor demarcation line on top is for Measuring focus. Throw back to Manual focus, probably more for Video use.

Nicely done Jared. Trying too make my way into stills again. A lot has changed in 12 years. This saves me a lot of time. I have skimmed over the manual a few times, but Canon often doesn't tell the significance of a setting, just what it is. The value add helps lot... And, I shoot Raw now myself. However, have you ever gotten strange artifacts in raw?

FYI: release shutter w/o a lens is used whenever you adapted lenses (manual) that the camera doesn't recognize. This is what I need to do in order to use my M lenses.

One use for that sensor plane marking is for your focus puller or 1st Ass't camera to take a focus measurement with a tape measure. (At least that's how we used to do it on our old Arri SR film cameras.)

Running 1.4.0 . I have noticed that some features don’t show up depending on the lens, and some of the features are moved. Had to stop several times to find where and why some things moved or not there completely. Your video was very helpful. Thank you!

#igotthisfar. Wow I was stumpted with the video settings. Was paused for 15 minutes because I was only getting 8K options only and that was because one of the options after that setting was disabled so only 8K was showing and that wasn't easy to find what I was doing wrong. Great tutorial. I appreciate the time this took since you were the factor in buying the r5 vs the other Canon cameras. Appreciate it. 25 years a videographer (with video cameras) now moving to dslr cameras...

Long exposure noise reduction doesn’t “smooth” images. It takes a second blank exposure to eliminate hot pixels common during long exposures. You absolutely should leave it on.

the mark is usually for cinema cameras that do not have a ttl viewfinder , you need to know where the sensor/film is to accurately focus the lens, you would use a measuring tape and measure from that icon and then you would know the subject is in focus since you cant see it thru the viewfinder, not sure why it's on a digital camera though, everything is auto, unless maybe if your using an old canon cinema lens or something, kind of weird

The infinity kinda mark is there to help you calculate focusing distance if you’re going to manually set it.

@jared Polin Thanks for the Video, just got the R5 today and this is exactly what i needed. :) on a side note Kelvin is measured in absolute numbers so it’s “5600 Kelvin” not “degrees Kelvin” just for future reference since you deal with color temperature all the time. Thanks again for the great videos.

The sensor signal is common in cinema cameras. For example, you can take a focus measurement manually with a tape measure.

I think the reason they have as standard " release shutter without card" is to allow the cameras that are on shops to be tested and take photos without the card, since if there is a card is easy to steal it. But yes, it's the first thing i change on my camera menu, and it would should start with that off, and it should be hidden on the menu. :)

certainly true, but it should be off by default. It makes no sense to enable by default a dangerous feature for 0,01% of use case

the line of the where the sensor is ... is for a geek use like mettering subject distance for exact focus distance
i believe that's for the focusing distance tecnicly or for the confusing point AND nodal point things
