  • Hey kids, You were promised a warts-and-all snare build series so here's a fail video. Turns out the stave were 5.9 degrees, not six. Between my bevel box and my digital angle finder there was 0.1 degrees of play. Looks like it's time to invest in accurate gauging equipment huh...
Maybe when I do that review video I'll get it on the right channel. That apron unbagging was supposed to go on my other channel; Gradually Wizardly. Oh well. :)

I like watching this series, as you're a honest guy. So many of the videos on here don't show and skip over and omit the problems, you don't mind showing things when they don't work out, and I salute you for that. - Hay, a mistakes been made, but we're all learning from it and figuring the correct way for next time. Looking forward to the next video.

So I actually just glued up a piece out of scrap plywood just to experiment, used a stave calculator and said 20 pieces, but on my glue up, every joint was a hair open. So I took out a piece and she tightened up just right with 19 pieces. Very interesting that you had the same issue. Cool videos man! Woodworking is purely experimenting and that's the beauty of it. Cheers bro!

This is a great video! A way to actually fix a problem because we all screw up.

We use hose clamps on the stave shells. The straps have a big ratchet block on them. In order to use those you have to fit them on a corner so to speak. Hose clamps are the way. We use a lathe and also a router depending on what the customer wants. Inlays etc....

Bought the straps before seeing this video. Really a pain in the a** .. They work if the bevel cuts are super exact and you position them in a clever way like you mentioned. Also it helps to build up the pressure evenly and use more straps... (I used 4 on a 4" deep snare...) That being said, i will definitely buy the hose clamps for the next drums! Strangely enough they are more expensive, at least here in Germany.

Nothing teaches better than a failure. Thanks for including the real world challenges of woodworking.

Absolutely, and you’re welcome. I really need to get back to this series… The shell’s sitting on top of a cabinet out in the shop waiting to be made round…

Working backwards thru a bunch of videos while I do a VERY tedious but overdue project on the other side of the screen. I liked this video though - dont remember part 2 of it though? Did you get new and shiny iGadget? Or are you still waiting for Timbercon to pack it and send?

It when wrong to much pressure on straps

I think what you’re trying to say is that when it goes there’s too much pressure on the straps. If that’s correct, then yes sometimes that can be the case. In this case, the angle was off by a tenth of a degree. Over 30 pieces, this added up to 363 degrees which is not a circle, hence the fail. You make a good point though, I’ve stuffed up a couple glue-ups in the past by over tightening the band clamps. Or, tightening one on the top more than one on the bottom pulling the shell conical can also ruin a glue up.
