    Kinda reminds me of my Grandpa planting with a 4-row planter on an "H" Farmall. He and two other farmers went in together & bought it only to plant cotton & soybeans. They split the upkeep expenses & etc. They had to get off of the tractor on both ends of the fields to flip the markers. It was a fun tractor for me drive around our farm

    I'm from an area in the midwest that simply isn't practical for these sizes but all I can think of is even just the daily basic maintenance, and the time it would take setting and resetting the planter! Though agri tech advances have reduced the manpower needed to farm, you would still need a good size crew to keep up with everything running equipment like this. I'm getting tired thinking about it!

    • @EATSLEEPFARM
      @EATSLEEPFARM 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Border Reiver at the very end he was “dead heading” to the other end of the field and would plant his way back up to fill the gap

    • @gregbaldwin5144
      @gregbaldwin5144 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Filling in the gap would activate the GPS section control, which automatically "turns off" the rows running outside of the gap you are filling in. But that's a lot of planter to run back over planted ground!

      +Luke Augustus you can see at the end of the video the 8320RT with the DB60 turns around to plant that last pass. The two machines planted opposite sides of the field and this pass is where they met up.

      The gps knows what has been planted and what has not. So the planters can automatically turn off the rows that have been already planted so no overlap or double planting. They can do it on the fly, so when you run into the stuff already planted it shuts down planter units as needed.

    @nickthomas3797 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why did they leave such a gap between the two planters

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the DB90 and DB60 started on opposite sides of the field. This is the pass where they met. The DB60 turned around and made the final pass to complete the field.

  • @958kris

    Can you explain how they arrange for a 54 row planter to "fit" on the last pass.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +958kris there was no arranging. The DB60 was planting the right side of the field and the DB90 on the left. The two planters met up in the middle.

    • @finlandfarmer1860
      @finlandfarmer1860 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But there was an obvious empty stripe between the planters?

    • @leebarnes655
      @leebarnes655 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, there was so it was not a very good 'meet', but no three row planter to fill the gap. They do have GPS guidance systems that are programed for planter width and can plant so well as to spacing that an obvious 'meet' strip can not be found in the field. But all this does is really move the odd sized missed path to one side of the field or the other instead of right down the center as in this video. It's not a perfect world, you will have to just live with it.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Finlandfarmer yes there was a gap. That is just the way the field ended up. At the end of the video you can see the 8320RT turning around and going back to seed the space. With GPS and row shut off when the corn is growing all the rows will be perfect.

    I can't believe they run their equipment over ground like that from about 2:50 - 3:15 mark!! Why wouldn't they leave a drywash so it doesn't just keep eroding? Before long it's going to be so deep they can't even get across it? Hell a bunch of the units weren't even touching the ground now, it's only going to get worse with every rain. That aside I still enjoy your videos. Keep at it.

    I counted 16 rows of corn head that was being folded up to drive to the next field not 18 rows

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look at 5:32 before it folds. When it folds it folds between two rows so when you count the rows folded you see 16. When it’s unfolded at 5:32 you will see all 18 rows.

      Farming with much larger very expensive machinery to cover more acres for less profits might not wise in the long run.

      BTO in Michigan just a couple of years back went under (45,000 acres) A large part of that land was picked up by another BTO that is now struggling and looking like they will also go down. While big operations tend to benefit from their purchasing power in bulk and such, it is no guarantee that you will turn a profit.

      I am friends with the Williams who own the 747. It is an impressive tractor. The 747 worked land in the wide open spaces of Montana. Flat, Big fields, little transport time. In Western Kentucky where this was filmed you are transporting down narrow roads from field to field. The day I filmed the DB90 it jumped from a 200 acre field to an 80 acre field to a 140 acre field 7 miles away. That transport time eats up the day.

      Of corn? Not very likely. More likely cereals. It's not only engine power that gets the job done. Think about the gear behind the tractor. We can plant well over 800 acres a day with just 500hp, much more efficient than that OLD Big Bud crap.

      The planters started planting on opposite sides of the field and met in the middle on this pass. When they reached the end the 8RT and DB60 turned around and covered the gap left between. With row shut offs the empty space is planted Bd the field complete.

      I rarely see a combine or cotton picker fold up. Have you? My point is there needs to be balance. How much larger are they going to get? If you are trailing one some operators are courteous and move over but others never do. Why is it the only assholes are the ones whose schedule don't allow for them to go 20 mph for miles when the speed limit is 55? I recognize and appreciate their function but some operators could stand a lesson in courtesy as well. If you are opposed to balance then I would doubt anyone would consider that less than a dumb remark.

      Where I live in the country traffic is much worse than it was just a few years ago. There are a lot more vehicles in each family and a lot of folks have moved to the country and out of the cities and suburbs. Seems you are saying the city is full of assholes and country folk are not. You maybe right but I'm sure there are too many everywhere.
