Hi Paul just found this series to watch! Very intersting can't believe there was all that railway infrastructure looking at the roads now. Chesterfield was a proper railway town, ❤😊
I suppose the line would have been closed even if the Bolsover tunnel had been okay. Now you would need three trains to get from Shirebrook to Chesterfield!
I think you're right. Would this line have survived Beeching? Probably not. Similar story with train from Whitwell. Like a day out getting a train to Chesterfield 😆
Many years ago I used to live on Spital Lane in Chesterfield. We used to play on what I now think was the route of this line as it headed East away from Horns Bridge. If you look on Google at Smith Crescent off Spital Lane you can still make out the route in a line of trees behind Smith Crescent. The line sort of runs parallel with Spital Lane. Also if you walk along Dingle Lane off Calow Lane you can walk under an old bridge which is part of this line.
Beat me to it. You can walk quite a lot up through Spital. Hady Lane bridge was filled in but cross the road and rejoin the line. There's an accomodation bridge at Dingle and then you're on your way to Calow. Waterproof footwear and trousers advised. Further on is where it crossed the GC main line. There was a link, but only one way.
Excellent video Paul. When we used tomtake stuff to barrow hill galas often used to go to some burger restaurant near that roundabout had no idea then of the amount amount of railways that had been there
Crazy isn't it. The scale of the LDECR. I'd love to have a time machine for a day. I'd struggle to fit in all the places I'd like to see. But this would be one of them.
I can recall meeting my grandfather off a train arriving at the Market Place Station; I can also recall one occasion seeing three trains (all steam!) crossing Horns Bridge at the same time (on the LDECR, Midland and Great Central). Sadly I didn't have a camera at that time...
Takes some working out all that construction built n destroyed in less than 100 years . When I first saw the maps in chesterfield library in 90s I could not believe where it had been .Great chapter this paul waking up my human harddrive. CHEERS 🍻
Those bridges must have been something else to see, great intro to Chesterfield if travelling by train. It's very sad to see the photos of the Stations destruction, especially knowing that there is nothing remaining at all now.
Quite simply your finest editing and drone usage to date. Having explored the area myself there is very little left to see but you really brought it to life. Head east towards Langwith junction please!
I enjoyed this video it was spot on and I just wondered about the three bridges with the great railway company's I have to look out at the round about market street station it went to Bolsover and then to langwith junction then to Lincoln the stations on route look identical to each other I think theres only on station now left
After Market station closed it became a timber yard for a few years , the platforms were cleared then finally demolished, the line is partly traceable East of Chesterfield....I spend many hours in tbe Portland hotel back in the 80's when I worked at the Abattoir on Hippet Street South which is where B&M's and the former Debenham store now stands , when I visit Chesterfield I always go back in the Portland...now Wetherspoons of course
A very good follow up to the previous Chesterfield video, Paul. The LD&ECR was like an impossible dream. I've read that it was originally going to go through Buxton, (more like under it) with all the hills west of Chesterfield! The amount of tunnelling involved would have been colossal to reach the Manchester ship canal. It's good how you've pinpointed where the Market place station was and associated sidings accompanying it. That short bridge abutment section is amazing in that it's the only piece of the old line in the area in existence. Many thanks for showing us all, with this film.
Cheers Frank. That route through to Buxton was insane. I saw a video on it somewhere recently and the scale of the viaduct dwarfing the Headstone Viaduct was unimaginable. Can you imagine the outcry now?
Thanks Paul. All obliterated. Such is the march of time and progress. Wonderful and inciteful, Cheers mate. Appreciated.
Cheers Marc. It doesn't take long for all traces of something to disappear does it.
Brilliant series around my home town 👍🏼
Thank you.
Few more to come too 👍🙂
Very interesting.
Brilliant.
Cheers Chris 👍🙂

Crazy isn't it. So much history when you scratch beneath the surface.
I've been out filming a follow up to this yesterday.
@@WobblyRunner oh great look forward to that!🥰👍
A fine walk back in time. Thank you for the video today. Always a pleasure to view these videos. See you on the next. Cheers Paul! ❤️🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Cheers Martin. All the best 👍
Very interesting…I can remember seeing the station buildings in the 1960’s always remember it seemed massive
Shame the actual building wasn't saved.
Maybe not the platforms, but that frontage looked great.

😀👍 ah yes I know where you mean.
You'll be pleased to hear that section of line is going to be in an upcoming video

Not much to see still, but fascinating history.

Fantastic memory. Now that would be worthy of a photo!!!

👍😄 human hard drives
I enjoyed doing this series, my first project back.
We've got to get down to Killamarsh soon

100% agree.
I suppose it was doomed to failure.
All the the name of progress eh?

As it happens, that's on my to do list 😉

Cheers Ian. Is it Fledborough that's left?

And it would have had Britain's tallest viaduct across monsa ldale
@@maestromanification wow didn't realise it would have been the tallest 😲
I'm sure I read somewhere it was to be a metal structure 300ft tall
