This is Cricket and I. What a wonderful session this was! He has since passed away (accident) so this video is incredibly special to me. Thank you Jamieleigh and Dave! I'm using everything you taught me with Nin still, and she's still spinning like a champ.

@@mioneconure10 omg… I lost my bird too I know the feeling. I hate it. (In a differnt way, he flew away without me knowing my mother opened his cage/forgot about it..)
I think cricket understood the trick faster then the owner even realized!😊 It seemed like each time he was just making sure that is what she still wanted.
This bird is SO CHILL. My GCC was a terror during training sessions because she was so focused on the treat in my hand she would just run or fly to me to try and get it. And then if I refused to give her a treat bc she hadn't followed my cue she'd get pissed and start to bite. It took a long time of putting "calm on cue" to be able to make it through a 3 minute session without a tantrum, but she got there eventually and LOVED her training time...gotta thank BirdTricks for that gem of a trick!

That is the exact issue I have and why I stopped trying to train him to fly on cue. Sees the treat just flys over. If I put him back without giving the treat he bites me -_-
My Green Cheek is 5 months old and I have only had her 2 weeks. How do you get them to stay on the perch?

@@Queen324 - You don’t. All training should be permission-based and if your bird flys away, that means it doesn’t want to train. Maybe try training somewhere other than a perch or rewarding him just for being on the perch?
Green cheeks are bossy little bullies. I love my green cheek but he's s handfull. Behavioral training has to come first before "tricks"
It took me no effort at all to train our GCC to wave and spin, but I didn't use a clicker, just a word ("Good" very excitedly) and a treat reward. He has graduated to playing basketball, fetch, and putting rings on a peg (we're currently working on color matching). Once I found his favorite treat (peanut), he will do anything for them.
I like how you teach the bird owner how to 'clean' up a movement. This way the bird is not confused about what you are asking from it. 🐦🐦🐦🐦
The whistles in the background are soo cute.
Also, cricket is the slowest eater I've ever seen.
My green cheek also eats so slow. Training is torture! lol. I always hear Jamie say eclectus eat really slow. But I figure green cheeks have got to give them a run for their money. :D

My green cheek is adopted - he was 5 when I got him and at that time the only treat he would accept was a commercial bird treat called Yo dips. He now accepts as treats safflower, hemp, millet, oat groats, pistachio, pecans and more. The Yo dips are still his favorite but I only give him a couple a day for a jackpot and for going into his cage when asked. He is always very eager to train

careful - birds are lactose intolerant and can't process the lactose in yogurt. just don't give him too much.
@@zephyr.mp4 I thought of that first thing and immediately started working to get him to accept other treats. I checked the ingredients of the yo dips and saw that there is actually very little dairy in them. 3 years now and he accepts lots of things as treats and eats healthy. Veggies in the morning and a variety of pellets in the afternoon.

It seems just as important to train the owners’ behaviour as the birds’ tricks. Both have to clean up their gestures and movement. Having a healthy bird is always the first step.
My Conure Kimmi died because of my stupidity that I didn´t listen to people knowing that birds are very sensitive.I miss my bird every day and nothing can bring her back to life😪

Cricket is adorable! I’m so jealous that she can pick up her bird around his body like that and he’s so totally cool with being picked up and placed down that way. If I tried to grab my parrotlet like that I’d lose a fingertip and a large amount of blood for real 😧
its all about learning their body behavior and learning what to do and not to do when touching them, I’ve tamed my green cheek to be okay with being picked up however I want as well

This reminds me so much of my first couple months with Link, my green cheek! Especially when she talked about Cricket getting frustrated and biting. I had a hard time with that in the beginning, because Link was learning so quickly and was very responsive, but some days or sessions, he just decided he was going to bite the fingers that gave him his rewards. XD To this day, I'm not sure what upset him; I feel like, because I wasn't able to learn to read his body language well enough in those instances, he learned mine instead and that eventually went away. Also, Link learned to spin and touch in his first week with me, but then I spent the next year trying to teach him to wave. He got it a few weeks ago. XD

Thank you for showing a video of conures, Cricket is adorable. My conure wont fly very far at all. I like the part about confidence, i think mine lacks that somewhat. Wheni bought my bird her wings were clipped and they have not grown back yet, i even think that one side is growing more than the other side. She will be a year old on April 1st.

Hi I love watching your videos and this conure looks so similar to my turquoise x yellow-sided turquoise. Pherb is approx 4 months old and has made tremendous progress from when I first got him. He almost no fear of dogs and has never bitten me (I understand this will change around 8 months to a 1 year old). He always let's me know politely when he wants to come out or go away and surprisingly tends to wait to poop until he's in his cage. He has a tendency not to step up unless he isn't touching his cage. He can be close to it but he generally doesn't step up unless he's off his cage. He makes very cute executive decisions on whether he wants to sleep I his cage or inside his little nest box which he only gets access to during evening and bedtime. He loves it when I imitate him because we start to have conversations. He gets access to lots varied foods such as nectarines, mango, spinach, green beans, microwaved carrots and apple. His favourite treats are pumpkin seed and blue berries. He enjoys chop but has a preference towards chunks of the fruit or veg. My mum owns a budgie and I'm unsure how to get them to get to know each other, the budgie is happy but Pherb goes into a frenzy, biting this close to him since he can't bite the budgie but otherwise he's a great bird

What treat were you guys using with Cricket? Is it just very tiny sun flower seed? I have a GCC too! I use small pieces of cashews, but I always have to use both hands to break it up and offer to him, otherwise he gets full really quickly. I've been dying to find a good size treat that I can offer with just one hand... It's tough using the stick when I need both hands to prepare the treat...
He also tend to lose focus on training if the treat takes too long for him to finish... So I'm stuck with cashew for a while now.
We got a second conure and he’s very chill besides when he sees us reaching up to the cage and then he darts on the other side of the cage we do have another conure and she’s very well trained how do we introduce him to us
What are the best treats for training. I see sunflower seeds here. I get nervous my bird won't then eat his pellets
Where do I find one of these living room area minimalistic perches basically just like a tripod with the T-shaped top so he can hang out with us in the living room I can’t find anything online I would love to have the same one you have here, but much much taller

I have a pineapple green cheek conure, and I cant get her to focus during target training. How would I be able to get her to focus?
My GCC is quite agressive, it stopped for almost an entire year, there was aggression last year during spring time for around a month, and it stopped naturally. Now, my GCC suddenly became aggressive, could this have something to do with hormone changes? She starts biting me, but is calm when handled by my parents.
Can you do a video on lovebird training basics as well and maybe one for training basics for rescue birds as well
I think any of the training videos on this channel will be appropriate for any parrot regardless of species. This is the first green cheek video I have seen here but they have been very helpful training my green cheek. He wasn't a rescue per se but he was adopted

I finally got her to go to me, but she has a biting habit and wants to bite constantly.
I have tried to get close to her, but the Beak is a Symbol of No!

What are you using for treats?
I am little confused on the behavior extension. In one of your videos Jamie was helping one lady with her cockatiel (she also has a blue and gold named Sunshine and rosebrested, with whom she freeflights, i belive). "How to Train a Fearful Cockatiel" is what it is called. The lady was making the mistake of: presenting the target, klik, then lure him a little to get him on the perch she wanted to target him but he didn't want to and then give the treat. Jamie told her to give him the treat exactly after the click (and few other things) and they did a great pogress afterwards. What is the difference between behavior extension and making this fault? Btw love your videos❤ and am sorry if i misinterpreted something wrong.
With click training you want to reward as soon as the behavior occurs so that the animal associates the reward with the desired action. By not giving a reward at all it can confuse them (especially at the beginning) because they don't put the pieces together especially if the bird completes another action. So in this videos case they want the bird to move in the direction of the pointer and get a reward. An exension is if the same movement we want is extended by making them move further in the same way for the reward in this case actually extended or stepping further in the desired direction, this is good because we want to enforce this desired action anyway. Much like calling a dog from across the room we praise them as they keep moving forward toward us and give a treat once they reach us. If for example we are trying to teach step up and we give the reward a few seconds after they step up or after they make another (undesired action) we could unintentionally reward the wrong behavior and confuse the bird. So in some cases it is a good idea to treat right away like when a dog sits before they lay down if our goal is for them to sit. I hope that helped.

I have a green cheek conure named Nigel, he is still quite young approximately 4 months old. He was hand fed, and now all he wants is the seed we have, not particularly crazy about human food. My bird seems to prefer hanging out on my wife. Yes, I said on my wife. Her body temperature is HOT at all times (I mean a furnace!)...I, however am not warm, in fact my hands and feet are always COLD so Nigel loves to lay under her chin and bask in her warmth. I, am longing for attention from my bird and not sure how to best get it. Millet nor berries seem to work. Not Cheese nor green leafy treats. I have tried going back and reintroducing formula for the hands on, etc...but he seems disinterested. Any suggestions?

I need help with my yellow naped Amazon parrot it bites and he open his wings wide open and walks around when the vacuum is on he just will not get along with me I tried holding him and then he bit me on my neck

Hello! I got my first green cheek conure 2 days ago! At first he was super aggressive and used to bite me super hard whenever i put my hands towards him. Now he steps up and he feels more comfortable. But I’m just worried about something. He has a feather that is cut in half, and when he’s alone, he keeps biting it. It seems like this feather is really annoying him. And another thing is that when he’s out of the cage, and chilling on top of it, he keeps biting the edge of the cage way too often. Is this normal for him to keep biting and grinding his cheek on the cage? Thank you!!
Has he had a vet check?
I would recommend a visit with an avian veterinarian to rule out any health issues and to address the issue with the feather.

This video was great for learning basics. I noticed at the beginning the trainers talked about food basics, hope the owners take note of their own eating habits. If it’s not mean to talk about animal nutrition, humans need to do the same.
