Great video..I was taught to do an inhale test of the regulators while the dust cap is still connected. If you can't inhale the exhaust diaphragm is good. If you can inhale your exhaust diaphragm may be bad. If your exhaust diaphragm is bad, while diving you will inhale water.

Thanks Ephraim for your comments. Think I'd use the tank pressure to blow air out of the 2nd stage before I'd be sucking on it. You may just end up eating a spider or cock-roach.
There are lots those little hints and practices from assorted sources that are beneficial ie: smell the air before breathing off the reg... etc. Your suggestion is very valid. Regards Bob C

You guys got me all setup with gear for my open water course. Now that I'm certified, this is exactly what I was looking for. Couldn't ask for a better Local Dive Shop. You guys really do set the bar high. Thank you dive safe.

I had a rental 2nd stage that started breathing "wet" at about 20ft deep, on down to 60ft and it continued. I switched to the octo, and slapped the primary around to attempt to knock whatever debris loose. Needless to say, it didn't correct the problem, so the dive was sort of ruined. It was pretty frustrating. Looks like I just need to purchase my own, so I dont have to deal with old, super used rental gear. Not to mention, my son's BC was leaking, making it difficult for him to control his buoyancy. Didn't seem to be a concern when I mentioned the issues.

Thanks Smiley, rental gear is not going to be top shelf gear BUT should function properly. ALWAYS test rental gear on a test tank before walking out the door with it.
If you dive more than say 5 or 6 times a year it's way more practical to buy your own gear even if you only invest to this extent

Hope you reported the issues you had when you returned the gear to whom ever you got it from. Regards Bob C

how do I check the pressure to ensure its full when picking it up from the rental. Do you just connect your 2nd stage and check or is there a pressure gauge pocket style?

Hey Al, Great question. Most shops, that have their act together, will usually have a Pressure gauge hanging at their checkout point. If not, always ask to have the pressure checked before you walk out.
...and yes you can always just drop the reg set you may be renting on the tank and check it if you're ignored or they look at you funny for asking.
      - Here at the Jax store, we place the BCD on at tank and check it's operation as well as the Reg set.
      - It's not unheard of for Valve Covers to be placed back on a near empty tank by mistake.
You just don't want it to be you it happens too. Thanks for the question.
