The metal (and bearing material, etc) that you show at the end is not the whole story. The "iridescent" appearance of the oil when you were first draining it and sloshing it around is caused by superfine metallics. The heavier particles (from the end of the video) will settle out, for the most part. The fines stay in suspension, getting pumped around and around. That's actually the stuff you really want to get rid of. I changed mine the first time at 5 hours and it looked like this. My 25 hour (really 30) still had some iridescence, but nothing like my first one. No harm in what you did though. It's out now.

It's a big hassle to use the existing oil drain plug as it is not directly in front of the access door. Save the greef and install a HON1010 "drainzit" extension hose. Just lift it out and remove the cap; bend down the hose into your collection container OUTSIDE the generator. No spills or drips and no skinned knuckles using a wrench. No accidental electrical shorts.

Great idea! So hard to get to this one, and the whole thing came out first go. I guess I should have done the second wrench thing, but I could barely get one wrench in.

Yes that oil has lots of metal in it. The color is a dead giveaway. But it is normal for first breakin oil change. Synthetic is great choice and I will use Mobile 1 full synth on mine like all my motors after breakin.

I purchase this generator and we had a three day power failure tree on the power line.. I ran it three days turned it off just to change
The propane tank. I previous had gas powered Generac that had ton of problems.. I,purchase this duel fuel….I will never run gasoline in it. The 20 lb bottle of propane lasted. 13 hours till ititthe low mark on the tank guard..
Changing the oil was a pain in the butt and messy…I just ordered that hose extensions
That generator was outstanding…ran a window ac and refrig😊

When checking the oil level you are not supposed to screw the dipstick back in. Only seat it into the fill hole then pull it out and check. SEE PAGE #16 in the manual for details.
    To check oil level:
---Slowly unscrew and remove the oil dipstick.
---Clean the dipstick and reseat it inside the oil fill hole. Do not thread the dipstick.
---Remove the dipstick and verify that the oil level is within safe operating range.
---If the oil level is low, add recommended engine oil incrementally and recheck until the level is within the safe operating range.
---Replace the oil dipstick and hand-tighten.

Instead fo the royal purple, you might consider using a heavy duty diesel engine oil in your small engines, like Mobil Delvac 1300 super (15W-40) or Shell Rotell T-6 5W-40. Diesel engine oils have a much higher zinc content which is beneficial to these small engines, especially since there is no oil filtration.

I was told by the Honda mechanic to ignore the xxxxx's on the dipstick and fill the oil to the edge of the lower lip just before it spills out on a totally level service, also seen the exact same subject on "Steve's Small Engine Saloon" TH-cam channel and he claims the same info and went on to say that those X's are dead wrong and doesn't even represent a safe operating range. I'm no mechanic but it makes sense to me considering how little oil there is in one of these small engines.

Quick question for you. So the manual calls
For .6qts (19 ounces). Looks like you have about 14 ounces that you put in.
I changed the oil on my Westinghouse i4500 as well, and put in .6 quarts and it was WAY over full. So I ended up putting in about as much as you did.
My question is wth is that in their manual for lol. Second, have you ever had any issues with that amount of oil?
    Thanks again man.

Just remembered that this is a floating ground generator like most inverter generators. They sell plugs you stick into the 110 outlet to let you use your surge protector. Otherwise you will likely get a ground fault when you plug in your surge protector and it won't work.

Hold a magnet on the bottom of your pan and then swirl the pan around to catch all the metal.

I had a similar size red color Honda generator but the engine block cracked when I ran it around the clock while stuck in a blizzard camping in Sierra Nevada mountains a couple years ago .
Now I ordered the blue Westinghouse generator like in your video for much less than a new Honda cost. Plus I got an Open Box discount from Westinghouse. The design appears to be quite similar in both brands . The Honda does have the engine cracking oil leak issue- mine is not the first to have that fault but I did use it pretty hard too.
Any tips for pampering for longevity of these portable generators? You did mention that they are kind of delicate. I do run my machines a bit hard. Would like to see you do a video on Do’s and Don’t s.

You really should read your owner's manual. I don't believe you're supposed to screw it in when you check the oil level and the oil level should be halfway up the threads of what you're screwing the dipstick into.it's also supposed to be hot when you change it

  • @rickbraden4272
    @rickbraden4272 ปีที่แล้ว +2

One comment about quality vs price. These Chinese units are much cheaper than a quality unit like a Honda or Yamaha. One thing that makes these cheaper is that they won't generally last nearly as long as Honda or Yamaha. There are Honda units out there with at least 6,000 hrs on them. Some of the Honda eu6500is & newer eu7000is are used for businesses with 10k -15,000 hrs on them. These work for ocassisional use but that's why they cost so much less.

  • @wideglidebry

If you look at the drain plug nut you removed you’ll notice some flats on either side of the shaft. That flat is made to accept a second wrench. If you use that second wrench to hold the flats still while you unscrew the hex head bolt on the end, your oil will instead drain a bit further out away from the engine base. Hard to explain but hopefully you get my point. 👍🏼

I just bought the Cummins Onans P4500i, that’s the same as your generator except the Cummins has a better inverter. I bought to replace my current Honda EU 3000is, since I needed a little bit more power in my RV because of my 1500 btu AC, and running the AC, microwave and refrigerator was sometimes making the Honda trip the circuit unless, I removed the eco mode. The difference between Cummins/Westinghouse 4500 is pretty big difference. The Honda is so much more quiet and the oil change in the Honda is so easy and no mess, no spilling oil. I wish they had a Honda with a little more power but not bigger in size of the Westinghouse or Cummins. I get 48DB with my Honda at 10 feet away and 62DB at 10 feet away. If you don’t need the extra power, spend the extra money and gat the Honda. Also, I changed my oil on the Cummins/Westinghouse one hour after the 1st startup with no load, and now changing oil again at the 24hr break in with 25% break in .
