Is That A Train Or A Tornado? Filming In Severe Weather!

- It took me over an hour to get home after a severe thunderstorm passed as I was filming this train, a tree FELL across the road very near the RR tracks! Plus check out the horizontal vortex (sideways tornado) in the sky over the train, no wonder that tree came down!!!

That’s what we do on the north woods. Take care of each other and clean up trees in the road even before the authorities get there. Great video Jason.
They say tornados sound like trains 🤔🤔🤔
It looked like a squall line with mesocyclonic activity.Mesocyclones and tornadoes have a key difference. First, a tornado is characterized by severe and violent windstorms at ground level., while a mesocyclone is a rotating part of the storm above ground level..
Great video. It was really nice that those guys took care of that tree and they didn't take long to do it. They deserve a big THANK YOU.
A clearcut case of civic pride.Glad you were able to document it Jason
You know you are in Wisconsin and a pickup rolls up and the driver reaches in the box and pulls out his chainsaw! Awesome video Jason!
The spiral cloud looked like a cinnamon roll
Props to the guy that brought a chain saw.
Cool nice train
According to Google: 'Roll clouds are a type of "arcus cloud," formed when updrafts and downdrafts churn the front edge of a thunderstorm (or cold front) into a sideways cylinder.' I have seen these before and they are freaky. Hope you got home all right. It is great to see people coming together to get a job done. It is also bad when your pizza gets delivered faster than the cops show up!
As a farm owner, I have been on unofficial tree clean up a number of times. Communities stick together.
Those guys clearing the downed tree reminded me of my days on the brushcutter crew on the P&W RR here in eastern CT back in 1980 when they bought the Plainfield to Groton main. Those guys were doing exactly what I used to do - pick up the loose branches and throw them off to the side, and get the right of way cleared. The line we cleared hadn't been touched by Conrail or the PC for many, many years, boxcar tunnels down the whole line. Thanks for the memories, Jason!
yes it picked it up i saw the clouds swirling
My two favorites trains and severe weather kudos to jason👍
Nice to see the cleanup. No helmets, gloves, ear protection just get ‘er done!
The stability of a train.❤❤❤❤
Good thinking, stopping and warning oncoming motorists.
Love to see this teamwork!
Great video of a huge combo locomotive 🚂. Transporting the nation's goods. Great railroading action. Thanks Jason.
That was a great video Jason, not only of the train but the removal of the poor tree that was blown over in the storm. Thanks for sharing. Hope you didn't get wet.
It's crazy because 9 days later a tornado hit my city
Jason, ya notice they WON'T wait on a train but will be patient while guys clear the tree LOL !!!
Awww man ... I enjoy your video ... And i like your environment ❤❤❤
One thing about living near the woods. You don't have to wait long for someone to come along with a chain saw.
Great catches all around! A really long train for just 1 engine, a thunder storm, and a tree removed from the road!
This is the U.P. at it's finest (Northern Wisconsin) Passerby with a chain saw and the job is done
Another fine video, Jason! Good thing that swirling air mass didn't touch the ground near you! BTW...love your excitement and enthusiastic commentary! BTW, there are certain types in Congress and local communities who do not want to see local citizens doing road clearing or any, other sort of work that is NOT provided by the government. They DO NOT want individual efforts to improve a community.....THEY want complete control of our lives from soup to nuts. Well done, lads!
If I was behind this train and a tornado came, I'm saying good bye 💀
Very strange cloud formations this morning in Iron river. I took videos and pictures but didn't look as good as in person. Large tree branch next door to my property in crystal falls was across the road. Kinda looked almost like role clouds here.
That was very interesting weather as 501 came across the street. The video does show what you were concerned about.
7:00 that is a shelf cloud. Can look very turbulant and violent but not a tornado. Seeing it "rolling" you will likely see it roll from back underneath to front and the front portion going over. This you can actually visualize how the airmasses are flowing into the storm. The cooler-dry (more dense) air is being pushed forward due to the displacement caused by the downdraft. The warm-moist (less dense and more boyant) air in front is being forced over this miniature frontal boundary created by the outflow of the storm. What you may notice is you were in a warmer humid airmass and as this came overhead you would have experienced a rapid drop in temperature and felt more comfortable AND wind will start to increase as that gust front came by. Typical in QLCS / squall line thunderstorms. You can also have a shelfcloud on a supercell as well. All they really indicate is the warm-moist/cooler-dry airmass boundary. They are impressive to photo and video though.
"And that's how its done in Wisconsin". Yup.
Stay safe jason
I loved your video! I just came across your channel now. I love content like this! Please keep up the great work! I 'liked and subscribed!
Such a long train! Great Wisconsin view of the train and clean up of the tree!!! Thanks for sharing!!.,
I saw in the comments that someone said the U.P. of Michigan is too far north for tornadoes.......well, guess what, its been documented in ALL 50 states that theyve had at least one or two of them. And Hawaii gets winter storm warnings in the summers on the very high mountain peaks!
The train is hauling some empty center rail cars and bringing them back to the timber cutting company. And the rest of the train are center rail cars with loads of what appear to be 2 by 4's for construction. So what's so exciting about that? The saw mill cuts up the logs and turns then into wood boards for building material. From the length of the train, it looks like there is going to be a lot of buildings and probably houses are going to go up.. Commerce on the move.
Tornadoes start out horizontally
Maybe the tree "crew" should have cut all the branches off and put the trunk by the track for the next Mega-Log Hauler.
We got severe storms last night no tornados but heavy rain and wind missed my area little over a month ago we had bad tornadoes around Kalamazoo Portage have you ever had tornados in your area?
Storm status. Pole upright. Tree down. Jason stuck on Highway "Oh Oh"
I can hear the voice of my late father going "Son don't drive out in rural areas with less than half a tank of gas" Personally I'll go as low as a quarter tank but I'm not into surprises when gas stations are few and far between. That sure was a sizable Freight with 50 cars and actually held the speed pretty good going up the hill
I noticed his car was on fumes too!
My thought was, its just a few miles and plenty of gas.. Oops. lol
we just had a doozy of a storm here
What you actually saw is called a "roll cloud". Saw on once where I live over 20 years ago. I was at work and saw it come in on the horizon. Some other workers and I watched as it went overhead. It was like watching a carpet unroll overhead. It got really quiet and you could hear the rush of wind up above. There were no winds in the storm at ground level at work but the same line of storms reached our home and the wind picked up like crazy there.
the only car(s) were there was the storm chaser and a car behind it, that tells you something
Well in some areas of one of the western states they are still getting snowstorms.
good train video
I just love civic pride!
Anytime you hear that rumble in sketchy weather, you find yourself looking for shelter... We'll figure out what's making the sound later, right?
Hey Jason , Have you heard anything about engine #402??? Thanks for the video
It's a Trainado
Lol torain
In big cities no one would know what to do. Just sit in a traffic jam, complain and get robbed while sitting in their cars. 😬🥴😰
In rural American they don't wait for help, just get out and get the job done. Problem solved. 👍😁🇺🇲
Be careful outdoors
That storm is making its way through northeast Ohio right now
Long train for today.
It's not going to kill him to wave that y the world is falling apart
Been raining all day here in Nola
Cajun?
New Orleans Saints who dat
Do we need to send you gas cards to insure you dont run out of gas? ⛽
I've got gas but not in my tank though
@@Marcuswelby-nx2te Won't get very far on that kind of gas!
How can only one engine pull all those rail road cars.
4-500 horse power electric motors help.
The first few trailers seem to be carrying huge quantities of f*ck-all.
The U.P. is too far north for them tornadoes
There been many tornadoes up here over the years since I was a kid. One summer we had 20 trees go down in our yard.
They are rare up here. But they do happen. Im a trained weather spotter. I didnt have the national weather service for the U.P. when I first moved up here. I tried reporting cloud rotation to my county. I got transferred to county emergency management. It went to voicemail.
The most lame video I’ve seen, no train wreck to see
We got severe storms last night no tornados but heavy rain and wind missed my area little over a month ago we had bad tornadoes around Kalamazoo Portage have you ever had tornados in your area?
That was a roll cloud out ahead of the storm. I've seen those before, it's like a sideways tornado.
We got severe storms last night no tornados but heavy rain and wind missed my area little over a month ago we had bad tornadoes around Kalamazoo Portage have you ever had tornados in your area?
Kudos to the locals who cleaned up the mess! Not afraid to pitch in and git er done to make things safe for neighbors!
501engine and 40 cars and red fredy
You may have heard of 2 men and a truck, but what about 4 men and a chainsaw? Made quick work of that tree. Made it look easy.
Pretty good, train, severe weather and lumberjacks all in the same video. Those clouds looked like they were trying to keep up with the engine as it passed. Super video Jason
Shelf cloud. Classic indicator of a gust front and/or gusty thunderstorm. Amazing video!
Be careful Jason! Your life and health is too valuable!
My first--and so far HOPEFULLY only tornado was in Paw Paw, MI in September 2008. I was at the laundromat when the warning sirens went off. Went out to see what was going on (I'm a trained Skywarn spotter) and I heard this train-like rumbling coming from behind me. I thought, that can't be a train, they tore those tracks out years ago! Well, it wasn't! It was a TORNADO!
Trains and severe weather.... the best of both worlds!! By the way that was a roll cloud... caused by outflow.
I was cutting grass before storm saw the storm coming made it just in time
Nice Monday manifest train!
And add to that a magnificent wall cloud (or shelf or whatever) with a crap ton of turbulence, downed tree and a solid downpour! Now to make the ride home on fumes! ;) LOL
Kudos to the guys who are always prepared with a saw in their truck and the willingness to lend a hand.
Awesome video, what a good group of people to take care of something before the authorities show up ! Excellent job guys !😊😊😊😊
Dang Jason, you got my 2 favorite interests in one video, trains and tornado clouds!
You 2
@@Marcuswelby-nx2te ive had an up close & personal experience with the remnants of a dissipating twister, it was 20-some odd years ago, i was out on errands in my truck, the sirens were going, i had picked up a project to work on, and the wind picked up in classic tornadic rotation. So i sat right where i was, the truck was bouncing around like crazy, and after a few minutes it was gone, that was my real-life experience of the movie, "Twister". Shortly after that, i became a severe weather spotter.
Omg I'm glad you survived. Could you recommend some storm sights with good Doppler radar.thanks paul
@@Marcuswelby-nx2te well, i am up there in age, and just cant afford most of that fancy weather stuff, i just go out and do the "eyeball & guess" thing, then report it to the local weather bureau.
First tornado I encountered as an adult happened to take place at a location within earshot of nearby tracks. The 1996 (IIRC) Lindenhurst Illinois tornado was a surprise spin up tornado in November. No expectations except for rain. Group of friends would meet up at this village hall association in town for weekend LAN parties on the computer and we'd just finished setup on Friday night when there was a power flicker and a rumble of thunder so we shut down for the night and prepared to lock up and head home. One friend, my fiancee and myself step out the front door and i just say stop do you hear that? Sounded like a freight hauling along the Wisconsin Central about a mile or so away at first but then noticed it was just the roaring along the tracks sound and none of the banging, squeaking, squealing or the thrum of diesels. Fiancee just turns to me and all three of us just go tornado at the same time and book back inside to take cover.
After things calmed down we locked up and headed out and didn't see much outside of the odd branch down until we got closer to the main drag through town when we started noticing signs of damage. Following day you could follow the path from where it started with treetop damage to where it started doing real damage. Best we could figure was when we heard it it was still in the air to our southwest and approaching, dropped enough for the pressure difference to pop the door open at the hall as we took cover and touched down about 2 blocks away. Was able to track down the details on the tornado several years ago and was apparently categorized as a strong EF1 weak EF2 that tracked from Lindenhurst to Zion Illinois where it tracked out into Lake Michigan before disapating and was note worthy for having such a long track for a spin up tornado.
What state is that in 🤔
I believe it was Michigan.
He said Wisconsin near the end

Bet you buy gas before you go out and play
Driving around on an empty gas tank in severe, tornado weather?
Always. LMAO
And they want to stop gas chain saws and use battery only, how can you if the power is out and all the batteries are dead. Love tha buzz saw! Nice people. Reminds me years ago we were at Ben& jerry's ice cream factory in Vermont, and the clouds were twisting like that. Then there was lightning and sideways downpour. We just got out of the tour and ran to the flavor graveyard for cover. It was tented, then the tent started lifting. I ran to get the car, got soaked and picked up the family. We then drove to our hotel, never got to green mountain coffe! We went to the scoop shop another day near where we were staying.
Well... that video ranks way, way up there in Jason's all time great filming adventures!! I was heading to Iron Mnt. from Green Bay to visit my friends at Lume and right around this time-- 11:00 or so-- outside of Crivitz or somewhere in that area, we were hit with the storm... crazy amount of rain, drivers not slowing down and wind. Lasted about 10 minutes or so-- I was driving into the storm-- but, this video captures what was going on so well. Great job, as always, Jason!!!🌧🌩🌪
Careful on what you admit Mr WI resident.. lol jk jk
@@jasonasselin LOL Was hoping you'd get a kick out of that! Congrats on your subscriptions! This is such a good channel for folks with our interests!!
Storms and trains are a good combo! That spiral feature you seen are quite common on the leading edge of a gusty storm. They are non tornadic. Its like an "air eddy"
Good Ol Boys
This had nearly 10,000 views Jason congrats for that. The weather has been crazy the past few months. Definitely tell something was brewing in the sky! The lights looks nice in the darkness anyway, fab train. You know what they say if you want a job doing, do it yourself! 😊❤
Yup that's how we roll down here and why I love living here in Door county
The DNR will probably fine them for “harvesting” timber
You don't get anything for being nice
If that was a tornado then you got two videos in one lol
i believe it had to be a tornado and also a train did come
19 center beam cars from LP

@@davidrassler329 yep! Blasted autocorrect.....
Did they ever replace the pole at the crossing?

1. If it's a tornado, grab your beer---
2. Run like hell! LOL!😅
