  • This Escanaba & Lake Superior locomotive ELS 503 (SD40-2) had been tied down overnight in Pembine, WI. Friday morning they grabbed all those LP Smart Siding cars that have been here a few weeks. Upon shoving it back they were really having problems, they tried for over 3 minutes but it just wouldn't go! They gave up and continued south....

Locomotive was pumping up air to cars to release the brakes. That one locomotive has more than enough power to move those cars.

    • @erie910
      @erie910 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

It takes a long, long time to pump up the air on a freight train of that length. If the brakes are still set from when they broke the train apart, it will be awhile. Assuming that ELS runs with a 90 lb. brake pipe, there must be at least 75 lb. on the rear before the train may move.

I have to agree. 503 was never near notch 8, so not a power issue.

I don't think they were struggling with tractive effort or buff. I think the engine RPM was to try to get enough air pressure to release the brakes! Once they got it above 95 PSI, the brakes released, and the locomotive had no trouble pulling the consist.

I never thought I'd see Pembine or Crivitz become a choke point on the railroad. It would be a real world of hurt if the paper mill in Ontonagon was still in operation. This goes to show that losing the 402 small as it may seem was a pivotal part of the daily Groove

The conductor should check brake pipe pressure at the rear of the train. When there's 75 lb. or more, the engineer should set the automatic brake and then release it. If the brakes set up and release on the rear car, all the train brakes should be released.

I’ve wondered that myself. Sometimes, it seems that I see the same cars going different
      directions; the same with the
scrap steel gons. The only thing
I can see that could be a redeeming factor for the ELS is
that LP is doing the same thing
      the plastics industry is doing.
They load a bunch of cars before the product is sold and the railroad stores them until
they are sold. The plastics industry has the cars moving
to a storage yard in the midwest. If they are sold enroute, the railroad is given
billing info so the cars can move
to the customer. ELS may be
      storing them until they’re sold/
billed. If that’s not the case, I
revert back to the fact that ELS
      gives poor service and that,
      coupled with the lack of
      maintenance, will sink ‘em.
      Good video! I enjoy watching
the ELS, especially the switching ones.

Interesting video. I wonder 🤔, if the reason for the lack of motion was possibly an issue of brakes set by hand. My understanding is that when you have to break a train in order to deliver or pickup from the siding railcars; the disconnected portion left on the main line needs the hand brake set. Something, I gathered as a kid watching Seaboard Coast Line R.R. deliver box cars to the local Anhueser Busch the distribution warehouse that was in behind our house.

Is it possible that those cars that had sat for awhile needed to be pumped on longer. After a
few weeks, the air would have
totally drained out and the brake rigging might be a little
stiff. That, with the weight of the other cars, may have caused them to have to pump
on the air a little longer!
Good video! I enjoy watching the ELS; especially switching.

    • @haroldreardon8070

    • @TPW900GP35
      @TPW900GP35 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@haroldreardon8070 It has everything to do with trying to pull a train with brakes not fully pumped off.
The engineer actually said that he
needed to pump on ‘em longer. The

sounding like the brakes hadn’t fully
