Kara was considered more of a J-Pop group because Japan was their gateway to success. Many Korean entertainers go to Japan but only a few penetrate the Japanese market, such as BoA and Kara.

Japan’s music industry value is several times larger than that of Korea so it’s incredibly lucrative business to sell music there. TVXQ and BoA were basically the ones who really made inroads. They definitely deserved it more than any of the more recent group. Their Japanese is so good they can act in dramas with ease. Jaejoong did really well that one time. BoA and TVXQ’s Japanese training must have been intense and truly earned a spot on the Japanese market. It’s why BoA, who worked her way from the very bottom, was upset that the korean groups were insulted that they couldn’t participate in Japan’s historically rich new year welcoming music show when they hadn’t put much effort to learn the language or culture. (As a Japanese person I couldn’t understand why kpop fans and Koreans were so insulted because Kohaku is for Japanese music and is not just for top selling artists but also to reach out to all the generations in Japan, hence the Enka. It’s not like they even pay the artists good money to appear on it anyway. NHK pays practically nothing 😂 If music-station suddenly said no to kpop artists I could understand how that would be upsetting but kohaku is a different field)
