I remember this chassis well, it was the lead to the degausing coil that must be kept plugged in.
The one chip decoder was from the early batch of sets, the later 2 chip one is interchangeable.
Like all designs of that era, heat was the cause of most faults, and the charred spare panels shows
how bad they got, some were often beyond repair as the burnt areas became conductive.
I was only 15 in 1970, by 1972 i was learning how to repair them along with all the other popular
    chassis from that time.
That orange painted cabinet shouts the 70's some were in white which turned cream due to the heat.
Happier days, when you knew the faults before you took the back of the set.
Thanks for this trip down memory lane.🙂👍

I cut my teeth on the A823 chassis. What you have there is an early Murphy Acoustic with the one chip decoder, also the later models didn't have the two big pots on the timebase board. For the age of it looks very good. I've not seen one for over thirty years !

Watching this video brought back memories. We lived on an RAF camp in 1979. I was 16 at the time and always visiting the camp dump. It was fascinating to rummage through the items. One visit I came across this same model of TV in gloss white. It was soon on my trolley and being towed home. Turned out to be an easy fix as the HT lead was arcing to the chassis. It makes me smile now as I remember being so proud that I had this great looking TV for free.
When we moved it went into my parents loft and most likely is still there as it weighs a ton. Not something you want to bring down the loft ladder!

Back in 1999, I repaired one of these, gave it a long soak test, and sold it to someone I worked with who lived up a long flight of stairs. Next day it broke down. He was very, very stroppy and threatened to wrap the TV around me. It went to the tip and I never worked on an A823 again. He also tried to chat up my girlfriend (now wife). When he was made redundant, I for one was happy to see him go. Funny the things you remember.

I used to like these. I sold hundreds of Co-op ex-rental models of these. The faults were fairly predictable and the weak spots easily dealt with before sale. The LOPTs never, ever failed (well not for me anyway, I kept one spare LOPT in stock and never needed to use it). The mechanical tuners had a problem with the nylon nuts disintegrating which was a nightmare until replacements became available from the spares suppliers. (These days you could probably 3D print them!)

The first colour TV we had when I was a kid was a Rank Bush Murphy, it was around 1970, it had four very clunky pushbuttons to select the channels. @@michaeldranfield7140 hi and thanks for the reply. I've seen a very good thread on the radios-tv. forum in which a post lists variations of the monos which started life with the dual standard A640 chassis. Then the single standard is the A774 chassis; there was also a solid-state single A816. My parents also had one of these for a short time... I remember my mum telling me this... undoubtedly one of the latter two but wanted colour and the shop were not happy with them because they'd only just started renting the b/w one! I found the user manual many moons ago and so asked about it - why they had the wrong one, for a different set. But they didn't! 😆
As noted below, the actual colour set we rented would have been the later version - the tube surround looks a little different to this beauty on the video, as well as the channel selectors were very light to the touch, instead of the 'thunk' that my Ferguson Courier b/w has, along with countless others from the era lol.
There are some nice advertising brochures for these sets online - I'd love to have them in my collection... I grab what I can from eBay when the price is right and do have a RBM tv colour catalogue from circa 1974, alas not having one of these on the pages.

7:20 - the single chip decoder indicates that’s a later board so the picture will tint slightly towards green. February 1970 date code on the caps indicates an earlier A823 though, so that decoder board has been swapped at some point.
Unless RBM were just using up older stock of new caps when this was made?

    • @michaeldranfield7140

as it came with a couple of spare boards which had both been worked on I would think this came from an EX collector or enthusiast. Other people have commented that the single chip board was the correct one for the year of the TV , so I would imagine the other boards have been used for fault finding , a thing I hadn't noticed in a plastic bag there were a set of decoder extension leads so I would guess at one time this set would have been owned by a collector .

So nice to see where some of these effectively defunct brand names came from. Bush and Murphy names just tend to represent cheap and mostly poorly made junk these days. I used to buy and repair a lot of ex-catalogue returns in the 90's. Murphy stuff in particular was always really cheap and nasty, as was Alba, Bush etc.

I have a circa 1980 SONY 26"" Multi-System TV sitting in the Garage
for decades - It was built by SONY in Germany and cost a fortune New.
At almost $2300 as near as I recall and double the price of a commonly
    available domestic TV.
It failed after only 3 months of use - as it was under warranty - back to
SONY it went --- They could not repair it and ordered a replacement
from Germany that took 6 weeks to arrive and another two weeks for SONY
to replace it and/or complete the repair - ready for collection.
Just prior to the warranty expiry period - it failed again.
I said - Screw it - and instead - I repaired it myself.
*Having studied Electronics Engineering with PHILIPS
I can only say that it was a pain in the neck to work on - complex
circuitry --- nevertheless it operates on various AC mains voltages /f
and all the variations of PAL - NTSC - SECAM and Middle East SECAM
It would have been great if the TV even existed in 1974 when I was on
attachment to the USAF for two years
There is also a 26"" GRUNDIG in the Garage with a faulty [Thyristor]
Horizontal Output Stage - The CRT is excellent on both TVs
It will make an interesting project to restore them.
The downside is that the GRUNDIG as well as other German sets
such as NORDMENDE - SABA -GRAETZ were not well suited to the
warmer climate in Australia - unless one happened to be in the
mountain and southern colder / and snowy regions.
The German sets operated at an elevated temperature - destroying
components and Circuit boards - and were very power-hungry -
and they were very good room heaters during winter evenings,
Besides those - I have two SONY 21'' Computer monitors - one of which
is rebadged as IBM - they cost me $5000 each NEW --
years later I found one that had been dumped by Sydney Based Modelling
agency - HQ in Paris France -- I discovered that it had a broken pin on the
CRT -- fortunately the CRT is still under Vacuum.
