    It's always strange to me just how close all of these concepts came to matching every one of their goals... yet still failed. I wonder if you'd do a video kind of talking about what US Army doctrine, force structure, and combat strategies and deployments would look like if vehicles like this WERE actually adopted and became the norm.
    My personal opinion is that these types of vehicles were just so radically different from what everyone thinks of when they think "tank", especially in a world where the Abrams, Leopard 2 and T-72 spring to mind immediately, that they were always going to be viewed as a bit weird and wacky to be taken seriously in the way that a traditional MBT is. Their design must have thrown a lot of people off, but when you think about it, the heavy/super heavy tank gave way to the MBT in much the same way - smaller gun, less focus on armor, and a light, faster and more versatile vehicle for it.
    Saying "hey this lil' 75mm gun can punch through as much armor as an M1 can, but do it once every second at the same range while weighing little enough to be air droppable and heli transportable AND having better anti-air capability"... must have made the Abrams look a little superfluous. I bet GD loved that

    "Speed could substitute armor."
    Until modern gun control systems came to be. Speed is still useful, but not as a way to "dodge tank".
    Same as how widespread thermals ended soviet low profile tank design philosophy. Back during Desert Storm. It took this long for russians to get the memo...
    Hearing about the production vehicle development and how they used M113 and Sheridan components, makes one wonder if it would have worked better then irl if it could "cooperate" with Bradley instead.

    • @matthiuskoenig3378
      @matthiuskoenig3378 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Low profile soviet tanks is more about reduced weight than reduced target profile.
      Something Ukraine has proven to be of vital importance. As even 40-50 ton tanks are having a hard time offroad in Ukraine.
      Analysists believe most Russian tanks have been lost atleast in part due to being bogged down while deploying offroad.

    Closest thing USSR had at the time was ZSU-57.
    Later modifications, with right ammunition, could effectively engage helicopters, planes, infantry and even some tanks.
    Full-auto double barrel 57mm gun is not a joke.

    I wonder what how many roles a modular combat vehicle built around an Ares gun firing modern rounds like an M830-equivalent could fulfil these days. Give it the ability to take and swap out mission packages like capacity for dismounts, a command vehicle for wingman UCGVs or UCAVs, a SPAAG for dealing with the increasingly likely reality of having to operate without friendly air dominance in some theatres or a light artillery piece that could put 10 rounds into the air in as many seconds while having the ability to have them hit simultaneously _and_ redeploy as soon as it's done firing etc. like an updated M113 but truly modular.

    i have just a suggestion for you, revive the tanks that should be added series.
    i have a fine boi as a small addition: the 2cv GHAN1
    20mm mg151 cannon for spaa and killing open tops or lightly armored vehicles
    75mm recoilles rifle for just the hesh lobbing goodness

  • @thuggeegaming659
    @thuggeegaming659 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The concept could be revisited with a robot tank. Without needing a crew, it would free up a lot of space for a bigger gun, more ammo, and could accommodate a more sophisticated autoloader more easily.

    • @countsudoku6305
      @countsudoku6305 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      main issue with drone tank is simple: enemy may try jamming communication, effectively disabling tank.

    • @thuggeegaming659
      @thuggeegaming659 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@countsudoku6305 The effectiveness of jamming is way exaggerated. There's actually no good evidence of it achieving a mission kill. But to preclude any possibility, it should have redundancy, if one relay is jammed, it simply uses another relay. Other manned tanks near by can act as relays, or even directly control the robot tank. Ideally, an AI would take over if the robot is completely jammed, which is unlikely.

    • @jintsuubest9331
      @jintsuubest9331 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't want a more sophisticated autoloader. This type with ct munition about as good as it gets without putting ammo above the turret ring.

    • @thuggeegaming659
      @thuggeegaming659 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jintsuubest9331 No you do. A more sophisticated autoloader means a more robust and reliable loader, that might be bulkier but is feasible in a vehicle with no crew. It can also potentially be faster at reloading. Without a crew, you don't have to put ammo in more vulnerable places.
