My mother had Alzheimer's. I was her caregiver for four years. I've read quite a bit about the disease. One thing I remember about my mother is that she seemed to be a worrier. She seemed stressed many times. I noticed even when I was a child that she would get up during the night and check things. I think she did this (not get good rest) for a very long time. I know stress can affect cortisol and disrupt sleep.

Congratulations, and thank you for making an important contribution to tackling the big question why we need to sleep.

That's a great finding! That might explain why students and thinkers need more sleep because their active brains during awake period produce more waste substances in the brains.

Are there brainwaves during sleep that make the cleaning process more effective than others?

I'd like to know if sleep cycles are a factor in the cleaning process.

There should not be any toxic waste products, in my brain, because, I have been sleeping, so well. Hope you, have been, sleeping well too!

I might have missed it, but what phase of sleep does the ‘cleaning’ occur?

Millions of older people sleep sitting up or on wedge pillows to help with acid reflux.
Could they be harming their mental health with this practice?

Sleep deprivation for many months at end can change your brain wiring - just witness the fate of Bradley/Chelsea Manning after persistent sleep deprivation!!
