      I'm always buying it every time I upgrade my camera ( it was for Z7, Z7II, after Z8 and Z9). I made it as a habit, like a lens filter, but for body... All of my cages after I was selling old cameras did an amazing job, as all dents, scratches were on them and not on the cameras😊 100-200usd accessory to protect 3k-4k usd camera 😉👍

    These new cameras are definitely more fragile than the older D series. I dropped my D4 from over 10 feet down the side of a small cliff and no damage, if that was my Z8 then it would have been catastrophic.

      @@mattgranger I stand by my comment, my D4 hit rocks and stone and even a cement floor, do you think the Z9 would fair the same. I don’t think so, and I do love my Z8 but it’s clear they are not built the same.

      @PhotoPilgrim 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think it's the same with Canon. Build quality isn't what it use to be. My 7d, 7dii and 5diii took a beating but my R6 seemed fragile in comparison. As s result I've switched to olympus.

    • @gforegerry
      @gforegerry 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My D3s took a tumble (0.7m) on to a wooden floor with 200-500 attached and the plastic front"apron" around the lens mount is cracked and part broke off. "D" lens ( or those with apatures) no longer register on the camera. It is about £50 for a new bit of plastic. So not so bullet proof. Where there is plastic, there is usually risk.

    Thanks Matt! Sorry to see the damage, but very happy that you share with us the dirt and grit of real life shooting! It ain't for whimps! :) You gave me advice, which I'm sure you won't remember, on sending my D810 in for servicing when it displayed the ERR code (shutter seems to be the best online answer & to send it in for servicing). I did so, but oddly it arrived not displaying any error! (But I did get a nice serving and sensor clean, immediately prior to shooting the total solar eclipse, so that was nice.) I have to assume the knocking and banging of shipping freed the shutter or whatever was hung up. Now I DID IT AGAIN, this time to a D750. I *think* it is happening when I shut the camera off whilst live streaming, and the shutter locks up ("ERR" displays on the top). I *almost* did it to my other D810 last week, killing the power, before properly shutting off the Live View, and properly turning the camera off. Gots to be more careful! :) Don't rush about! Breath. Relax... heheh.... Anyway, thanks for all your practical advice Matt. I do appreciate it

      Ironically this had a video cage in it prior to the trip. I don’t like them for shooting stills. I also don’t use ‘protective’ lens filters :)

    • @antontaranenko8824
      @antontaranenko8824 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@mattgranger True, they bulky and I don't like them as well, the new type SmallRig with golden line more comfortable, but still it takes some time to get used to it, plus golden line on my opinion looks so so...
      But, for me it is more a necessary action, as in Tokyo where I live, all shops where you can sell old gear and upgrade to new, they very very picky and scratches can drop your expected selling price almost half... If even miniscule scratches on the glass - they sometimes rejecting completely, especially if it's back element...
      May I ask, if possible, why you don't use filters? Just curious about the reason, maybe I am missing something? I'm using Nikon's Arcrest and didn't notice any difference in performance of the lens. Even after intended test/pixel picking and testing them outdoor with and without filter, in all possible situations... Only bad sides of the Arcrest, are the price and static electricity pick up like crazy, even after blowing or cleaning with dry lens cloth...

    I'm curious how the tape holds up. Curious if it will be an issue when it's hot. Gorilla tape gets looser when it's hot it seems. I hope it works well for you. Seems like you did a great job taping it.
    But make sure to not get adhesive residue inside, so when you swap tape, use a rag with isopropyl alcohol to wipe it off externally first, if any got in the gaps wipe it off.
    I had to use tape too ,but not on the camera it self, but the Peak Design Clutch hand strap, as it always wanted to go out of place, so I put tape there to stop it from doing that, so I can just put my hand in there and the camera is secure, instead of aligning it then putting hand in. Annoying design flaw, but they might have their reasons, but for me it's just an annoyance. I used Gorilla tape, but it eventually gets pushed away. So have to replace it from time to time.

    I have a Z7ii and think the card door very flimsy. It often opens just by my reaching into the camera bag and taking out the camera and sometimes has flipped open just in the bag and I worry that I will pull thr camera out with the door open and it will catch and break off. Not impressed by Nikon's design/build in this simple matter.

    PS, your a little late on the don't drop advice. My D810 viewfinder is glued on & one of the hinges for the pop-up flash is off & I'm guessing it had a spring on it also. But everything works. No complaints. I've owned for 8 years & shooting wildlife I would guess I have well over 100 clicks considering how many times I passed 9999. I'm insured but because it was neglect to pay attention on my part, didn't file a claim. Well, I had to fix my Z7 II's LCD with some packing tape and duct tape while on vacation in Yellowstone a few years ago. Dropp the camera and the hinge was bent plus I cracked the LCD screen (but it still worked). Had to duct tape the screen down but it still worked for the remainder of the trip (happened on day 2 of an 8 day trip to YS and Grand Tetons). But I guess a broken memory card door isn't the end of the world in reality and is far "better" than say a bent lens mount (which would render the camera useless). In my case, I probably jinxed myself since it was the one time I had a spare camera with me (my Z6 II). But still used the Z7 II for most things even with the broken LCD.
    But let's see here, I think you broke the sensor shield and now this... perhaps Nikon should hire you to torture test their cameras?
