I did the same thing back over the Christmas Holidays in 1988, I believe. I was able to get up there by Black Mountain Camp Ground road which got me back on the Blue Ridge Parkway, past the road block that is in this video. Love those mountains as I live there.
Well, I've run into the same roadblock, but always figured there must be a sneaky way in! LOL - now, between this video and some of the comments, I can figure it out! But a major caution - you better have the proper tires and drive to do it - else, it could be a nightmare. Especially on days where there is a sudden rain / black ice segment before climbing further into snow. Black ice and mountain roads are an incredibly dangerous combination that should be avoided at all costs!
I checked my Goggle Maps. It looks like you went to Barnardsville on 197 South, and then accessed Mount Mitchell via Dillingham road, and then to Stoney Fork Road which got you back on the Blue Ridge Parkway and apparently there was no road block to keep you off the Parkway. Let me know if I am correct. Great Video.
Hello Gene Garren, I'm looking to go Mt. Mitchell on the 1st week of March. I went there once before but BRPW was open. If that's not the case when I go where is this 197 south road? Thank you
Petros Haldoupis 197 N Goes from Barnardsville Jupiter exit going North from Asheville on I-26. Or one can drive to Burnsville NC on I-26, then 19E and then take 197-South that will take you from Burnsville to Barnardsville. However you will not be able to get to Mount MITCHELL that way. The only route that bypasses the blocked gate off of HWY 80 is a route the rangers use. That can be accessed at BLACK MOUNTAIN CAMPGROUND ROAD OFF of HWY 80 before getting to the Parkway driving from MICAVILLE NC. At one time years back I could use this as the park rangers used it. Hopefully it will no be looked and gated.

Very true! I was lucky with some good snow vs black ice

Drove this once and the gate , just b4 the top, was closed. Hoofed it the rest of the way. Beautiful adventure.
Jolly good!
Josh. I assume that you used the same route as I did, but would love to hear exactly where you actually drove to get back on the Parkway.

@@genegarren833 The road is closed due to a bridge washout, don't know when it's gonna open again...

My finger hits the mute button during the annoying music.
I actually liked the music. You didn’t have to be such a downer
