  • This very special evening will celebrate the launch of Kadie Kanneh-Mason’s new book House of Music - a moving and inspirational account of determination, music and love. It is a story about race, immigration and education. It is the story of a mother and her family. And it is the story of her children, seven phenomenally talented musicians.
    Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason is a former lecturer at Birmingham University and the mother of seven children. Sheku Kanneh-Mason, her third eldest was the first black musician to win BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2016 and performed at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Three of his siblings are also former BBC Young Musician category finalists and the eldest, pianist Isata, has also presented for the Proms. Collectively, the Kanneh-Masons have performed at the 2018 BAFTA Ceremony and concert halls across the world, not to mention the hugely popular live performances from their family home in Nottingham during lockdown, as captured in the BBC’s recent Imagine documentary.
    Josie D'Arby was born and raised in South Wales and has worked in television since the age of 14. As a teenager she attended the Anna Scher Theatre and she is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . Before retiring from Acting in 2012 Josie enjoyed a long and varied career on stage and screen. As an RTS award winning broadcaster, Josie has presented for all the major UK networks on programmes related to music, art, entertainment and human interest, broadcasts ranging from Top of the Pops to BBC Radio Four documentaries. She is a regular presenter of BBC Arts programmes including BBC Young Musician ( with Clemency Burton Hill) , BBC Choir of the Year (with Gareth Malone ), BBC Cardiff Singer of the world (with Petroc Trelawny) and of course the BBC Proms.
    5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. There are only two rules - no scripts and only 15 minutes each.

    All praise to the Kenneh-Mason parents for their parenting, The children are a great example of their hard work. Kadiatu has inspired me to finish my book. As a person of African descent I am proud of them as a family. They are a positive example to all families from African/Caribbean background. When the family are playing music by classical musicians of African descent (such as Schubert) it would be good if they could highlight the fact that the musicians is of African descent. By highlighting the race of the musicians it would raise people's awareness to the fact people of African descent have and do make music of different genre. Listening to the family's music raises my spirit especially during this lockdown period. In a society where racism exists I am glad that Kadiatu and Stuart have asserted their identity by giving their children African names this helps to reinforce their identity and ground them as individuals.

    I'm reading a few pages each day - loving it - and needing lots of tissues as I go! I resonate with so many of the stories, being the mum of a professional cellist myself - so hard with the first child! Mariatu will sail through with so much wisdom behind her! Thank you Kadie for your personal insights - we need to hear this!

    This is wonderful. Such a lovely family - and a gifted one. I love the way that music is such a natural part of their lives. And talking of natural, I really like the youngest one playing the cello in her socks.

    Great Britain.... you won’t be Great if you stop the funding of classical music in state schools. It’s just as important as Math, English, languages, etc etc. shame on you. Look at this family, don’t you want to have more musically talented families coming out of GB? I’m so proud of the Kanneh Masons- I hope Great Britain is too! 💕💙💙💕💕💕💕

    Love this family. Such an inspiration. I’ve been looking more and more for Braimah as my daughter just started the violin and since my husband and I are not musical at all, I thought we could all watch together, people of colour, playing the violin. Konya as well! Can’t seem to find enough of them though :( I always feel Jeneba and Aminata look a bit... bored? Disengaged? Not sure. But just an uninformed observation.

      @toscanaremi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have you seen the documentary on the family? Aminata seems quite outgoing but Jeneba might be the quiet one but I think would be the next star of the family

      Love Jeneba. My introduction to the family was watching her at age 9 or 10 playing Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu on TH-cam. Was blown away and just had to find out more which led to the rest of the Kanneh-Masons.

      @@JuniorBLF She is talented. She started studying with Vanessa Latarche - noted piano pedagogue - recently. She’s also playing with the Chineke Orchestra this Monday 19th. It will be broadcast on Radio 3

    I am not sure how she coped. As a single African/Ibo descent dad of three, it was very very difficult. Well done. I am impressed.

      They are an inspirational to us all, why the the colour of their skin has to be mentioned, I dont understand?.
      They must be the most talented family in the world.
      Great musicians.
      Love watching and listening to these guys.

      @@petegriffiths5896 In this day and age we must be honest that racism still exist much of it is very subtle. This family are engaged in destroying the stereo type image that people of African descent have never produced classical music. Schubert is an example of a person of African descent who has produced music.
