Thanks so much, I used this video to fix my 2017 5K iMac. Fans were on all time and, it was buggy and laggy af. Stripped down as per this video, cleaned 6 years' worth of dust from the vents at the bottom and the rest of the machine and replace the thermal paste with MX-6 and thermal pads. Even in the current heat we're experiencing, I have yet to hear the fan kick in. Everything is running like a new iMac. No more random crashing or restarts and all apps run faultlessly.
@@TechnicFreakJulian I have a late 2015 with an Apple nvme that was sold as part of a Fusion Drive, which failed. I had the spinning drive replaced with a 2.5" Samsung, but the repair shop didn't offer me the option of removing the logic board to get to the nvme, so it's still on the back of the motherboard, throwing failure errors.

That's SO crazy that such a simple thing as cleaning your computer is THAT hard Last time I buy a mac
@@GeorgeVoice thermal pads are sold with 3 differents thickness : 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mm; the question is really legitimate since too thick mean the gpu (wich is bordered by the 8 vram chips with thermal pads on them, and has only thermal paste on it) could possibly not in contact with the heatsink, and too thin : the gpu will be on contact to the heatsink but not ther vram/thermal padded chips. For the others : I've just done the steps described in this video and installed 1.5mm thermal pads : after a few hours the gpu ands it's vrams chips seems to run cool. Hope this helps.
Excellent instructions. If you do this with a usb-c thunderbolt iMac make sure you plug in a usb c cable BEFORE firming up the installation of the motherboard. I’ve literally just done this, it’s 1mm out and it’s made the usb-c ports unusable. I’m going to have to detach the screen and tweak, frustratingly! Also I used 3m tape with is too thick and makes the screen stick out. I used an Amazon ‘screen tape for iMac kit’ which is a lot thinner and perfect.

And the thermal pad "ARCTIC TP-3 / 1.5mm on the VRam " The System works fine till i start using " TH-cam " only this one " Gpu 0 Diode " over heating like crazy and goes up to 109°C / 228.22°F" and as soon as i pause the video it drops quickly down. to normal temperature. While browsing i do not have any issues its completely normal temps. But is only this " Gpu 0 Diode " ( AMD Radeon R9 M295X CORE ) that does this. The rest all has normal average temperatures and stays below 60°C. What about the rest of the GPU sensors? Mine are GPU AMD Radeon 53ºC, GPU proximity 1, 43ºC, while watching this video on 4K. Ambient sensor, 39'4 ºC and that's impossible. It could be a sensor false reading? I've never changed the thermal paste. But It's 6 years since I bought the Imac so, It's the time.
Forgot to do this on my last SSD upgrade last week. Oh well.😟 A ridiculous amount of tomfuckery to have to basically dismantle the entire computer just to swap out an SSD. Don't get me wrong, I like the computer, I got the first retina iMac version in 2014, I was sold on the screen and even today it still holds its own some 10 years later. Longest-lasting computer I've ever had. I'm not sure how much of that is due to it being a mac though, probably more likely because computers are far better than back in the 1990s, don't need as frequent upgrades, not worth it. But still, am building up a PC now (xeon). Because the maintenance & upgrades are just too hard on these iMacs. Prefer windows anyway. Not lliking the ultra-thin cables connecting to the monitor to the rest of it either. Half the time when you put it back together it doesn't work as even the tiniest speck of dust seems to interfere with that main monitor cable.

They ship 5 million macs a year according to statistics. Probably up 50 million in total over the last decade. That means probably only 1 in a 1000 mac users ever bother doing this. They are more likely to just go out and buy the latest model. Even replacing the SSD is too hard IMHO.
I was thinking about overhauling my partners 2015 imac, with some new thermal paste and an ssd. it's seems really struggling to multi-task anything, and the hdd seems to be on the brink of death, but alas.. Apples artistic and futuristic mobo designs.. Really seems time consuming and nerve wrecking to maintain hardware in these things.
Apple is notorious for using proprietary designs and overly (and unnecessarily) complex assembly solutions to discourage people from trying to maintain and/or fix the macs. They just want old buyers to become return customers. I find it infuriating since I paid for the original hardware, and since I own it I should have the right to fix it without downing Xanax by a fistful. I am in a very similar situation: I have a late 2015 iMac which I bought new almost 10 years ago. The fan comes on even if I but look at the keyboard, and the hardware monitoring software, which I installed long time ago, goes nuts alerting me about high temperatures on GPU and CPU. I keep this iMac running 24/7, so it is to be expected that a cleanup and new thermal paste is in order. I will attempt to do the maintenance, but in case I screw something up beyond repair, I already know that I will get a Mac Mini M2. Seems it will have the same (or better) performance than my current iMac, and it looks like l can pick it up at Best Buy for $499.00 (which is $100.00 less than on Apple's website). Good luck to you in case you attempt the surgery as well. To me, the most challenging will be the cutting of the sticky tape (congrats Apple for saving $1.03 by not using screws) and prying the screen off. But if I take it slow I may succeed... having proper tools is the key, though. I like Ifixit kits, and this where I am going to get the new sticky tape kit from. I am also debating with myself if I should get a brand new replacement fan and put the original one on a shelve with spare parts. It only makes sense, since the fan spins continuously for almost 10 years now.
These Apple products are overpriced, disgusting, overcomplicated, useless scrap products. What kind of engineers designed these? I can buy brand new components and build the same PC for less than half of the price of these iMacs. And those custom built PCs are much more serviceable with much better cooling and upgrade potential.
My quadcore iMac is 13 years, but feels and looks brand new, upgraded with a 2tb ssd/32gb ram. It’s retro and will increase in price. Your new pc already looks like trash. I wouldn’t want it, if you’d pay me to use it.

Well-presented. But I can't imagine going to the trouble of removing the logic board without also replacing the stock hard drive with an SSD.
this imac had an apple "nvme" drive installed on the mainboard, so the Harddrive is possibly for Data, which is still absolutely fine

Before anyone attempts to open one of these iMacs, I recommend getting a full set of adhesive replacements before starting to open it!

isn't it faster to just replace the HDD for an SDD? can that be done by just swaping them?
