The Tamron was my choice in this category. It fits nicely in my sling bag. The other two are too big and that non-removable collar is a definite hard stop for me.
Excellent as usual… because of the size I like the Sony 70-200 f4. For the photos I am likely to use it for the speed difference will only be a slight disadvantage and the macro capability and reduced weight is great for me. Nice review!!!!
I’m also APS-C shooter and got the Tamron v1 a few months after release. I’m happy with it because I can shoot family and some wildlife. But agree with you that there is still a gap for APSC
I have the Sony Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 G2 - It's super sharp and I believe weighs less than this. It also has (VC or Vibration control) which is basically OSS - Auto focus is blazing fast and its soooo much better than the 1st version which I had previously tried - but I'd be interested to try this lens, it looks super well built, clean, and sharp. My Tamron is comparible to the 70-200 G Master with some exceptions - in terms of picture and video quality, but I'd be interested to try this. It's the switches, even though I have 3 switches on the Tamron. This one looks like the kind of lens I would want. But the heaviness kills it for me cause I like the Tamrons (28-75mm 2.8 G2 - and the 70-180mm 2.8 G2) set up, and lighter lenses. It doesn't excite me to carry super heavy lenses to go shoot
Great video. How would u compare this to the Sigma 60-600? Ive had my eyes on that since the release last year. But this lens looks impressive as well.
There’s a big difference between the two lenses I’d say. It all depends on what you’re looking to shoot. If you want to get pictures of indoor concerts or plays, maybe some sports events that take place in darker environments. Then get the 70-200 is better. If you want to go out and take pictures of wildlife and outdoor events at a much longer range, then get the 60-600
@hyponiax ya. I was more so looking at performance. I only have a sony 50mm full frame and a sigma 16mm. The 50mm extremely sharp too. It also has amazing performance overall. But i have my eyes set on that 60-600mm however if there is a big performance difference id like to consider that in my decision between the 2 lenses.
I recently purchased the Sigma 24 to 70 2.8....this is next on my want list...and side note, if you stick with Sigma glass, the zoom will always turn the same direction, I believe ...bonus. Great review, thank you!
I have always enjoyed the 70-350mm G OSS, true it is not f/2.8 but I am looking at the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD Lens which would replace the 24-70mm & 70-200mm f/2.8. One lens instead of two. Cheers!
Thanks for the review. BTW your photography has matured over the years. I'm moving back to APSC full time as there has been great glass come out from Sigma et al.
Appreciate the balanced bit about AF. For information , with the 2.8 GM II and A7iv or A6700 ,with a person running towards you , you're likely to get a lot or only misfocused ones depending on lighting , face contrast , wearing glasses and probably other factors.
I dont't as I've got the 70-350 and i love it. Yes it's not the brightest but lightroom ai denoise does it's job very well. Plus, I really apreciate that extra range.
@Loutchianooo me too. But i really like that long 350mm. But dang, would be nice to have that f2.8 hahaha. Still pref the form factor of the 70-350 haha
Great review, I am looking at the A7Cii and either this Sigma lense or the Sony GMII, my main usage will be travel and volleyball...do you think this lense i fast enough?
I had that lens, I kind of regret selling it - super sharp in good lighting. Not so good in lower light conditions though. I ended up getting the Tamron 70-180 2.8 - G2 ---- it's a great Lens but I do miss having Native Sony lenses - But, the good ones are too expensive compared to the competitive 3rd party lenses coming out recently that are just as sharp
If you need an L mount, the Tamron is not an option. I think it’s a little odd that all of Panasonic’s MFT lenses zoom one direction, but Sigma L-mounts zoom the opposite direction. They’re both part of the L Mount Alliance. I want this Sigma, though. Love my Sigma 24-70/2.8.
Nice review. And did you have any freezing issues with the A6700 ? I was planning to get the A6700 along with this lens for wildlife second body. The 1.5x crop factor makes it a fast great combo for mammals. Now because of the freezing I might have to get the A7C II which becomes a lot expensive & only 14 MP in DX mode when needed.
Hi mate. Thank you for your review. For your opinion, today on the market I can find Sigma 70-200 for around 1200 £ and Sony 70-200 first gen for 1500 £. All lenses is brand new. So what kind lens you will buy today ? Thank you !
Greetings, according to the SIGMA manual, the control of the diaphragm from the lens ring for this purpose, only works on compatible cameras and so far I have been unable to find a list with such cameras. On my sony A6000 it does not work, please tell me the APSC or FF model in which the ring works? This information will be very useful, I'm thinking of Sony a7C (when it has the price it should have) or A7III. Thanks a lot 😎
Super review of a lens l have ordered. No bullshit. Neat and factual analysis. That`s what l can bear to see. Just saw this "curl top" which included Sony`s and Tamron`s qualities. He is tiring!! Thumbs up for you!
Wondering if I’m off my rocker here. I’d like to use this on an APS-C camera for video. Specifically a church livestream as the camera would be at the back of the room, approximately 95ft. from the stage. With the 1.5x crop factor I’d be getting a 105-300 equivalent. Has anyone used a telefoto in this way before? Thoughts?
I want a telephoto lens with more reach. Been debating between the LUMIX s pro 70-200 & the Leica 100-400. But after seeing those pics SOOC!!! Wow! Incredible! Gonna have to consider the Sigma. For the L mount all I’ve had were sigma lenses but at this point I’m all but done with sigma focus inconsistency. I want a LUMIX lens because the auto focus will be better but that price….tag….phew….even used! Does anyone know of a side by side comparison of the LUMIX & sigma 70-200?
Would it be dumb to use this lens with a sony a6400? It would then be 105-300mm? If not wise to use, which lens do you recommend for hobbyist, pictures of my toddlers, now being more active, bike, school, sports. Etc. Future proof lens.
@@ArthurR if we compare let say 35mm 1.8 apsc lens on apsc camera vs 50mm 1.8 fullframe lens on fullframe camera, is there we get same amount of bokeh? Or the aperture need to X 1.5 for the equivalency?
nah, i use it on a 6100. i've taken a lot of my best pics with it. at the worst, you can stop down to f/4 around 200mm if you want a sharper pic. at 200mm, f/4 delivers the perfect bokeh imo. it's a bit much at 2.8 (since it's 300mm - that's a lot of compression). hope that helps.
Those images seem so much more “dreamy”. The Sony 70-200 is a fantastically sharp lens but lacks character. I’m considering selling mine to get the Sigma.
Sports, events, theatre, etc. 200mm is as far as you can go, at f/2.8, without the lens becoming enormous. f/2.8 is as high as you can go, before low light and/or fast motion performance suffers.
As a Sony shooter since April 2023 (previously Canon for 20 years) I would buy this lens to pair with my Sigma 24-70 zoom. After all IT IS BLACK! I hate white 70-200mm lenses.
Tamron is great if you're an enthusiast and just farting around. If you're a pro you're going to need to the quick changes available on the outside of the Sigma lens. Also the foot that people are griping about is very nice for grip. You won't want to take it off. The Sigma is a pro quality lens even if a slight step down from Sony quality. The Sony doesn't surpass the sigma enough to make it worth the extra $.
Good review, good lens, but I still choose the best one, and the best one available on the market today is the SONY 70-200 F2.8GM-II, it’s like choosing a beautiful and smart wife, I already chose 42 years ago, I still admire him.
The Tamron was my choice in this category. It fits nicely in my sling bag. The other two are too big and that non-removable collar is a definite hard stop for me.
I love Sony's 70-350mm APSC lens but I wish it was a F2.8 lens.
@@sambroom4680absolutely! And high ISO isn't that of a problem as it was in the early dslr times
@pixxelpusher look at how big actual 300mm f2.8 and 400mm f2.8 prime teles are. A 70-350 2.8 would be in-between those.

@danyexzea9963 looking at some samples and the performance stats, it would be a better option over some other telephoto zoom lenses.

Wow! The Sigma takes amazing shots!

A better than other F2.8 lenses in my experience. It was able to identify eyes in extremely dark conditions better than some of my F1.4 primes.

Can you put it on a Sony ZV-E10 even tho it’s full frame to aps-c ?

Sigma’s next 35-135 f2.8 for apsc is going to be sick 😅
My only telephoto is still the APSC 55-210 kit lens. If Sigma made an APSC telephoto with a big aperture, I'd definitely upgrade.
