    I love the pacing of your voice and the video in general. Very informative. Just bought an Aeromatic 51 from the early 60's and wanted to affirm my choice :).

      @@gentleman_of_the_pen I snagged a black 51 with an unmarked lustaroy cap from PenSmith. I’ve heard collecting 51s becomes a hobby in itself so I thought I’d start with something standard xd.

    I have the new Parker 51 with the gold nib and whilst I understand some of the negative criticism regarding this pen I find mine to be one of the smoothest nibs in my collection.
    Yes, I would have preferred a mote refined hood as in the vintage models but, as a writing instrument I am well pleased.

    In my opinion this new version looks cheap compared to the vintage Parker 51s of which I have 3 of them. Vintage Parker 51s have a fabulous history.

    Parker used to make excellent pens back in the day, but what they sell nowadays, is nothing like it. But I do appreciate the fact that they've tried to recreate an old classic. I also am a fan of Pelikan, and frankly, I think the M200 is the best pen in its price range.
    And as always, this is a great review and I'd be happy to see a video about the book as well.

    I have been using a genuine Parker 51 since the 1950's and it writes well and has never given any trouble.
    However the new "Parker 51" is misnamed because it was not designed in 1939 .and the company is giving the impression that it was -misleading naming for a poor product.
    Your writing script is excellent and gives a very good impression of the pens whether they are good or bad.
    I wish that the other pen reviewers would emulate your style instead of the scrawl that most of them use.
    Thank you

    Are all Parker converters compatible with all models?
    I mean, are for instance old Parker converters from the 90's (i.e. Parker Sonnet) compatible with current 2021 Parker 51?
    I'm asking because I tried to fit a converter from a 90's Sonnet into a modern 2021's 51 and it looks like I need to push hard (slimmer body on the 51? / thicker diameter on the old converter?), but I didn't to avoid damaging any of both.

    • @gentleman_of_the_pen
      @gentleman_of_the_pen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for your comment. The converter is supposed to be 100% compatible. For instance, the vintage converter from my Parker 45 from the late 70s-early 80s (equipped with a rubber sack and a metal bar) is compatible with modern Parker pens. With the Sonnet comes the difficulty that it's the most faked pen I've seen besides the Montblanc 149... And I've encountered fakes/copies that are made to look like they are from the 1990s. Only the strange date code is a giveaway they're not genuine, and sometimes the wrong nib on them. So not all converters you'll encounter are genuine.

      @@gentleman_of_the_pen
      My vintage Sonnets (and their converters) are 100% genuine, because I bought them decades ago in a physical shop (mall) which was, at that time, official dealer for Parker, Cross, Montblanc, etc.
      I've noticed that the converters have also to be pushed hard into my genuine Sonnets (for safer fit as they are not "screwed" / "threaded"?)
      Same feeling (hard push of my genuine vintage Parker converters on my brand new 2021 Parker 51), but I decided to wait until I get feedback from you expert guys, as I don't want, like I said, to damage or break any part. I want to be sure before "experimenting"... 😅

    I was willing to give Parker a chance and play along their initiative. But to me, we are closer to the _how to put a "new" product on the market at the least expenses and efforts possible using an old reputable model mystique_
    than a _true modern well thought-out, re-interpretation of our classic pen, worthy of its reputation_
    This whole hullabaloo about the new Parker "51" made me interested in the original version which, for some reason, I overlooked because I'm not very involved into vintage.
    I struggled a little bit to find a good offer on eBay to match my wishes, I finally got my hands on a nice fully renewed late 1940's Vacumatic for 110€ which, its finicky filling system aside is a surprisingly good pen !

    Thanks for the detailed review. Regrettably not all products are winners. Kind of miss your sass, I guess you were sorely disappointed with this. You showing that you got five beautiful and iconic Parker pens for what you paid for a mediocre new one is a good metric of your buyer's remorse. Would love to hear about the bottom three. Parker Jotter I am not really into it and my Parker Vector is not a good writer.
    Hope Parker gets the correct lessons from this and gets a better iteration.
    You got a lovely collection of Parker pens!

    More than a tribute, it seems like a mockery. Why not bring her back to life just as she was, with some small detail to indicate it? The "51" was unrepeatable. A Parker Glory (no longer in existence)

    I have never heard of so much of ambivalence towards a fountain pen, from so many reviews on TH-cam and out of it, as much as the new Parker 51. While I don't dislike this pen, but I do question the motive of the maker, for the lacklustre design choices they've made.

    • @gentleman_of_the_pen
      @gentleman_of_the_pen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This pen is a decent offering, but I was expecting too much from it I think. The name "51" implies a high standard for expectations, that might explain most of the negative feed back on the pen. Parker could have offered a better pen at a premium price, but then reviewers would have complained about that aspect. A more high-end offering would have made the pen less accessible, but would have probably been preferable, but Parker chose to maximize profits by making the pen as available as possible and by reducing manufacturing costs... Maybe we can hope for an enhanced version down the path.

    • @stimpunk

      @@gentleman_of_the_pen When Parker announced they'll be making the 51 again, most of its fans, and fountain pen enthusiasts were led to think, it'll be a reissue of the original version with its endearing features like the slip-cap - which was what the old 51 is famous for - a fast notetaker. What we're presented with was a screw-cap. That's a deal breaker to me. But that is not to say the high expectations of the new 51 were rigid, because some of the people who expect Parker to include the aerometric filler system with a piston converter, saw the practicality of the change.
      The costs of new molds and parts-making for the the new 51, could be the factor as to why we got the the pen in its current configuration, but in the end, from the reaction of most fountain pen collectors, it's clear that it was to Parker's interest that they persist with the slip-cap feature, improving on it instead of giving up on it. And still make the whole package attainable in price.
      The problem is, Parker's 51 is like an olympiad who's become too sedentary over the decades of non-participation, losing some of its tricks and edge, to time, and in the end we got something else. An easy way out to make money. I know I sounded entitled, but again, it's now proven to be in Parker's interest to follow everything (except for the aerometric filler) to the letter.

    You are a beautiful writer and make the new Parker '51' 'talk'! I think you are right in all you say about it. It pays 'homage' to the original '51' - '21' and '45'. It is very much though a pen for the 21st Century sharing similarities with the Parker Vector and Jotter pens in its nib and feed. The clip is that of a modern Parker Sonnet. I like this new 'variant' very much and prefer it to my 70 year old vintage Demi size '51' which has recently been restored and is in pristine condition. In my opinion the new '51' will be become a future 'classic' much sought after by Collectors of the '51' both vintage and modern. I have the burgundy model which I am delighted with. Thank you for your review and again, your beautiful script. A review on calligraphy - beautiful handwriting - would be most welcome.
